How to Load a Kayak on a Car

[Music] hey everybody this is complete Pete here this morning we're gonna try to load our one of our new kayaks here this is a 2020 wilderness it's a it's a 12-foot kayak and it weighs 68 pounds I figured out that I could lift this kayak I can jerk it off the ground and get it in the water I cannot get this thing up over my head to get it onto this roof rack system this sedan I've tried a couple different ways to get it on one of them is to get it straightened down a little bit try to get it out of an angle [Music] of course there's a handle in the front and there's nothing to grab on to underneath here which is a bit of a problem for me to get it on by myself to people no problem there's no way for me to get this on by myself without hitting the car when deflector or dropping it on America so you've seen me struggle to try to get the kayak up here by myself by trying to hook the front edge on here again I want to avoid any damage any the doors or mirrors or anything like that the problem I envision is this any of the folks I've talked to or videos I've seen all have suggestions to get a kayak up on top of an SUV or a vehicle with a you know higher higher top I haven't seen anything to get help to get on top of sedans so hopefully this is a video that's going to help her buddy out another thought I had was to use a shipping blanket over the rear trunk of the car to kind of cover up to protect the pain a little bit and I think I'm pretty sure I can get it up on there again very unwieldy set one end up on there and there you go that's a good way to do it my concern is running the the weight of the boat up over this lip of the car I don't want to have a $500 body shop repair just to get my kayak up on top of the racks when nobody's around to help me and I'm gonna show you another way that I come up with to do that one of the methods I came up with again struggling to get this boat up on the roof of the car by myself is just using a ratchet strap this is a simple ratchet strap that you might use as a tie down up front or rear tie-down for your for your kayak so the thought I had was to get this right on my rack system get it right on there ratchet it tight not so tight that I push the whole the rack so up but you can see how that stays pretty well on there and what I'm gonna do is go right ahead and show you how I get the kayak up on top by myself it's gonna grab the front of the kayak [Music] straps are moving straps just gonna come right back off of there again throw it in the trunk ready to go so after using our strap system you can see how easily that works it's a great simple way to do it to be self-sufficient the one thing I noticed is the boat is kind of slippery on top of these aluminum rails there is a solution for that and let me show it to you so to dress address that issue of the kayak slipping around again trying to be the best I can with being self-sufficient getting the boat on top we have a couple of a yakima aero crossbar pads to go on top of our bars I'll put a link to these down below and it's a great way to carry your kayak surfboards anything like that their ballistic nylon they have velcro closures they go on really easily and I'm gonna throw them on for you just so you can see what it looks like [Music] these things come in different lengths very quick to install you're just gonna just put the velcro right around the back and I'm done rack pads they've got it has a non-slip surface on the top so and it cushions the cushions the boat against the rack and there's one for the front well if they're back they come in different lengths to match your bar your aero bar set up and they really work great I would definitely invest in a set of these [Music]
