How to level your caravan

[Music] hi i'm liz from caravan guard insurance achieving a level caravan is an important step when setting up onboard systems such as the fridge need a level caravan to be able to work properly and simple things such as the sinks and showers also need a level base so that the water can drain away completely but aside from the onboard equipment a level caravan will also help your overall personal comfort after all it's really not very pleasant sleeping on a sloping bed in your caravan the good news is that a little caravan can be achieved in a few simple steps so in this video we go through the principles of achieving a level caravan some do's and don'ts and three products which you can use to help you there is a misconception that caravans use their corner studies to level the caravan but this is incorrect instead the caravan is leveled in two separate processes firstly from side to side and this is done by raising one wheel higher than the other the second process is to level from front to back once the caravan is level the corner steadies are then used to steady any wobble in the caravan they support not lift the caravan to check that you are level you can use an inexpensive spirit level an app on your phone or a dedicated electronic gadget that detects the level of the caravan in all cases check for level on the floor not the sides or the cabinets as mentioned the first task is to level left to right and we'll demonstrate three popular products to complete this step to begin let's use a leveling ramp [Music] using a leveling ramp is the most affordable of the three products there are many variations of leveling ramps some with notched areas for easy leveling some that come with chocks already built in and some that designed for motorhomes remember you only need one ramp for a single axle and two ramps for a twin with the spirit level decide which side of the caravan needs to be raised in this case it's the left hand side that needs to be lifted place the ramp in front of the wheel that needs raising and then move the caravan forward you can do this using either a motor mover or use the toga to slowly pull the caravan up the ramp in either case it's a good idea to have someone watching the spirit level to give clear indication when the caravan needs to be stopped once level it's important to chop the wheels on both sides apply the caravan's handbrake and either release the tow car or the motor mover an important point here is try not to reverse up the ramp when the caravan is moved backwards the caravan breaks release to allow the caravan to be moved so if you reverse up the ramp and apply the handbrake the brakes will not work until the caravan is moved forward so when leveling it's far better to drive the caravan forward up the ramp and apply the handbrake where the brakes will be engaged the positive side of using levelling ramps is they're cheap and easy to use on the other hand they can be difficult to fit the alco secure wheel lock once the caravan is level the next method is lock and level the lock and level system is an airbag that sits under the tyre of the caravan you maneuver the caravan so the wheels are on the markings of the lock and level bag then pump air into the air sac to lift up the caravan once level has been achieved simply switch off the pump and close the valve and that's it you can then move on to the task of leveling from front to back lock and level is compatible with single and twinks or caravans simply buy the product that suits your caravan in fact the lock and level is one of the easiest ways to level and attach wheel security items to twin axle caravans on the positive side they're easy to achieve the perfect level on the other hand they may have some bounce on uneven ground the final product is the milenko aluminium leveller the leveller is a cradle that fits around your caravan tire then with a ratchet it's wound up to lift the tyre off the caravan once the caravan is level simply stop winding and again that's it the positive is they're very accurate to achieve perfect level however they can take a long time and they can be hard work using any one of these three's accessories is fine for getting the level left to right but now it's on to the task of leveling from front to back adjust the spirit level in the caravan so you can gauge how to level the caravan is from the front to the back this step is completed just using the jockey wheel winding the nose of the caravan up or down will get a perfect level check the spirit level often to make sure the caravan is level and once complete it's time to lower the corner steadies remember these just steady the caravan as their name suggests and should never be used to level the caravan so there you go three ways to level a caravan as a sanity check it's a good idea to use the sinks to make sure that the water drains away correctly another good check is to get a glass of water and make sure that the liquid inside is perfectly level of course there's always a gadget on the market to make life easier from leveling indicators mobile phone apps to fully automatic hydraulic leveling systems
