It doesn’t seem like it, but his tutorials have a lot of knowledge in them

I couldn't have said it any better than this guy--very thoughtful and empty of ego.

I like his channel, but I think he's too slow and prolix. He shares very good stuff on his channel, though.

[Music] okay how to learn VFX is the most popular question I receive on Instagram and this is the topic of today's video [Music] [Applause] first things first do you need a special school for VFX short answer is no longer answer is it depends it depends on what you want to get cuz university film academies all those fancy higher education entities they're not only giving you skills they give you something more it's networking it's experience they also provided you with high end tools and universities where the most successful teams are born you can make meet your best mate in university or in film academy and you share the same passion make sense I learned VFX myself but still I think I would benefit the most from going to uni because going to uni doesn't mean you have to stop self studying and self developing you can go to uni and keep doing your own stuff keep looking for your own ways to learn and develop yourself while going to uni and then you will get the best from both worlds alright so by some reason you don't want to go to uni or you just can't I hear you asking ok so if I want to learn VFX where do I start well start by choosing what you want to do is it characters creation is it modeling is it rigging is a texturing is it landscape creation sci-fi landscapes fun fantasy landscapes for magic forests is it hard surface modeling spaceships cars robots or maybe you want to learn all of these together in series big production these are all separate departments with hundreds of people in them and they're just focusing on what they're doing one team is just doing modeling another team is just doing texturing third team is doing rigging for created characters but you can be a generalist as myself which in my honest opinion is better because then you become a problem solver rather than just an execution tool with that being said knowing what you want to do will help you to choose correct tools to learn speaking of tools nowadays there are quite a few of them available out there let's pretend you're a big fan of characters design in this case you would consider learning ZBrush which is a sculpting software if you want to focus on architecture and hard surface modeling you would consider 3ds max if it's complex scenes and character animation stuff like that you would consider learning Maya my Oh Maya by the way is the industry standard it's really powerful it's really flexible but unfortunately it's it's not user-friendly at all and this is the reason why I switch to cinema 4d there are much more software's out there and sometimes in your workflow in your pipeline you would use one two three or even four software's at different stages reason for that is that some software's can do stuff that others can't and you need to mix tools in your workflow I personally started with 3d max because I was doing some interior work then I switched to Maya because I thought it's logical as it as its industry standard and I want to do VFX but then I found cinema 4d and that's exactly what I still recommend for anyone who's asking alright you chose what software you want to use and what you want to do next thing you want to do is start creating what but I don't know anything can I create something you have to start from something don't yet come up with an idea or get inspired by something try to replicate something from sci-fi movies or try to recreate a character or build a Star Wars ship whatever just do something my first-ever CG video was my idea was I wanted my old logo to morph into liquid butterfly and so that butterfly flies under the rain do we want to see how it looked like [Music] I spent several weeks clicking on different buttons just exploring the interface and when I had something I wanted to do I just was looking for articles that would explain and help me to achieve it when I finished I clicked render button and it took 48 hours for this ridiculous video to render on my alt MacBook Pro the reason it took so long was that I didn't really know what I'm doing and it didn't optimize anything I just threw everything I could in this video and this is the secret of self-education if you have enough passion F if you have enough desire your brain will start generate questions in 2018 I'm pretty confident Google can answer any question you might have there is absolutely ridiculous amount of articles videos tutorials courses free paid ones whatever just pick one start learning I started this channel because I want to grow this enormous knowledge database with my ways of doing things with my approach with my thoughts about VFX and I hope I can inspire people to start learning VFX I couldn't imagine I would be able to sit here with you and share my my tips my tricks my ways of doing things as for me it was a bloody voodoo magic that needs centuries to learn VFX is a way of thinking as a VFX artist you start thinking how world works our lights emitted our shadows casted how gravity affects different objects as you learn as you go you will find more and more answers to your how questions over time you will find yourself in a position when you don't need tutorials anymore you will have enough skills to come up with your own solutions to different problems and that's where the true art will start let's summarize what we just discussed your steps to learn VFX decide what you want to do choose your tools start creating slash replicating subscribe to this channel and just create create create never stop creating things if you have or if you will have motion graphics animation the effects shall never stop creating your own things I strongly believe that the most effective way to learn learn and self develop is by creating stuff that inspires you the most paid projects commercials they're not inspiring unfortunately most of the time just because they're not yours it's not your passion inspiration and passion are things that will push you forward and make you create more and more complicated things that's it for today I hope I answered some of your questions gave you a bit of Direction inspired you maybe if I did subscribe to this channel because I will be exposing some wooda tricks now go and create something [Music] you [Music]
