[Music] as you lay tiles you're certain to come across some obstacles that need to be cut around like pipes and basement pedestals for things like a basin pedestal you'll need to make a template use a piece of thin card cut it to the same size as your tiles and then place it where the tile will go cutting slits in it where the pedestal will fit press the card down and fold up the flaps around the pedestal then draw around the pedestal with a pencil lift up the card and then carefully cut away the flaps around the pencil line check once again that the template is the right size then place the template over the tile and Mark the tile then cut the tile with a utility knife as always make sure you use the knife safely when cutting a vinyl tile turn the tile over and score along the paper where the cut is to make it easier to pull away once it's cut check again that it fits correctly then place it in position repeat the action on the other side of the pedestal or similar obstacle if needed for large obstacles you might need more than one template a pipe that's in the way is fairly easy to deal with if it's not a whole tile make sure that you cut the tile to the correct size first then put the tile up against the front of the pipe and mark the centerline of the pipe then place the tile next to the pipe and up against the wall and mark the centerline of the pipe next mark the pipe diameter if the pipe is a hot water or heating pipe mark the tile so that the cut hole will be slightly larger than the pipe this will help to prevent creaking or ticking noises occurring due to expansion when the pipe heats up then using a scrap piece of wood to drill in to cut the hole using a drill and a suitably sized hole saw next use the utility knife to cut along the tile line that is between the pipe and the wall the Tarpan now be fitted around the pipe to cut a similar hole in a carpet our first cut along the line that is between the pipe and the wall and then used a utility knife fitted with a hook type blade to cut out each semicircle to form a pipe hole [Music] well that's the bulk of the job done if like us you are laying vinyl tiles in a bathroom or a similar wet area you could seal the joint between the vinyl and the wall with a sanitary grade silicon sealant make sure that the sealant tube nozzle is cut at a slight angle and is cut to have the right size hole the bigger the gap the bigger the hole needs to be start at one end and moving along in one continuous movement maintaining a steady pressure and speed to smooth the sealant you can use a sealant smoother or a wet soapy finger but always remember to wear gloves and that's it your new floor tiles are laid why not set off your new floor by fitting a t-bar or threshold bar in the doorway to make a neat joint between the new floor and the flooring in the next room for more ideas and know-how visit diy.com [Music]
