hi I'm Joe Lee from Joe Lee of craft and today I want to show you all how to make meat selvage edges and your knitting look at that how cool is that but we're not just gonna do it for the Garter oh nope we're gonna learn it for the stocking stitch got em all twisted the rib stitch and seed stitch by the end of this video you're gonna learn how to make all nice neat selvage edges in all of your works so without further ado let's get started okay so with the garter stitch let me show you again what the slides look like see how neat those are that's what we're going for so the garter stitch is actually really easy to make those clean selvage edges all you have to do is slip the very first stitch of every row purl wise with the yarn at the front that is it that's all you have to do so yarn at the front go into that first stitch as if to purl but just slip it off then you take that yarn and you make sure you yarn back okay and knit across that's it that's all there is to it now I'm gonna make sure that I have both in the description below and I'm gonna have a pdf pattern so you could download this I'm gonna put a link down there for you for you guys to download this so you guys have all that information okay that's all you do first stitch of every row you're gonna slip purl wise make sure you have that yarn at the front that's very important okay and that's it that's all you have to do I'll show you one more time just the slipping part with a couple of stitches I'm not gonna knit across it's garter all right what's garter right you met all the stitches in the front side in the back side and all the stitches knit all the rows but again first stitch yarn at the front slip 1 purlwise make sure you do not do this I'm just gonna go back here and knit because that see what that does with that yarn going back we've created a bar though it's gonna disrupt that selvage edge right so you're gonna slip the first stitch with the yarn at the front and then you got to make sure you yarn back through the middle and then knit across because that way having a head slipped sorry having had knitted the previous stitch and then slipping it the way that I'm telling you that's going to create the selvage edges and that's your garter okay so stocking stitch what is sake stitches quick refreshers for those who don't know with sake stitch what you do is you knit across all the stitches on the right side so Row 1 and then we purl on row 2 alright that's how you end up with stocking stitch and here's my edges here's the B's right there and there's the B's right there so how do we do this well it's easy this is actually on a two row repeat right so the first row the right side row where you see all the B's we're just gonna cross just knit from beginning to end missed slip the no special stitches so that's what I'm gonna do now I'm gonna go in and I'm going to knit I'm gonna try to knit quick for you guys it across all the stitches maybe I should have cast it on as much as I should have but as much as I have well have you noticed that my work is curling that stocking stitch for you in fact let me hold it back so you guys can see I mean I'm knitting across but yeah stocking stitch tends to curl so it's just it is what it is if your stocking stitch for the if you're doing the stocking stitch from the very first time you think well no my work is curling having had just done the Garter for for a while you think I'm doing something wrong no actually it's fine it's perfectly fine alright so Row 1 just knit all the way across to the very end magic happens on Row 2 and what we're gonna do on Row 2 is we're going to slip the fur and the last stitch purlwise with the yarn at the front just like we did the Garter stitch except we're only doing it on the wrong side on the first and the last so here we go yarn at the front you're gonna slip is as slip it as if to purl and then we're not going to yarn back because we're not knitting across we're pulling across so we're gonna go into the next stitch and we're just gonna purl and we're just gonna purl all the way until we get to the last stitch and I'm not a lot of people like to purl sometimes you gotta I'm gonna again purl to the last stitch got a couple left try as fast for you guys and in that last stitch yarns already at the front because we're purling right you're just gonna slip it purl wise and that's it that's how you get neat selvage edges on your stocking stitch I'm gonna refresh for you guys Row one just knit across row two you're going to slip the first one and the last one purl wise with the yarn at the front and purl those Center stitches and that's the stocking stitch so let's talk about ripping and creating selvage edges within them let me show you one side here's the purl side and right and here's that knit stitch in the beginning now this works any kind of ribbing as long as it's a knit in the beginning and a pull at the end so two by two one by one two by one first stitches and that last stitch is a pro right and I actually like using this selvage edge on my ribbing especially if I'm doing the RIP scarf or anything that you want to have those clean edges I mean you always want your knitting to be as neat as possible there's I mean I love ribbing when it's tripped up - it's very very pretty anyways it's very similar to how we did the Garter with one change okay so what did we do with the Garter we slipped it purl wise with the yarn at the front but for the ribbing we're gonna slip it pro wise with the yarn at the back that's it just the first stitch of every row right so yarn at the back slip 1 purlwise and here's the cool thing right since I'm doing a two by two my next stitch is a knit so I'm just gonna go in there and knit this now I'm gonna yarn forward and again it's two by two so it's purl two and yeah that's it first stitch of every row you're gonna slip 1 purlwise but you gotta have that yarn at the back not at the front you aren't the friends with garter yarn at the back is with the rib I'll go to the end and I'll show you one more time all right so we've got knit two purl two hopefully you guys are getting this I know what the angle of my camera every time I purl I feel like I'm gonna hit my camera that's why sometimes I I think I go off camera but I try for you guys alright so again beginning of the row first stitch yarn at the back slip as if to purl so don't go in as if to knit don't go oh you're back and slip off as it's an no as if to purl slip off and then I just go into that next stitch before I knit it right and then just purl across and by doing so right slipping that first stitch purlwise with the yarn at the back you've got neat selvage edges in your ribbing now let's talk about the seed stitch it's the very last one that we're doing and let me show you the edges I always like to show you the edges they're so pretty and there's this one this sides a little bit a little bit wider that's just the way it looks but it's honestly not that bad this one's a little tighter now the seed stitch as you notice but I have a little marker there and I do that because this stitch is identical front and back so what ends up happening is that this particular pattern is done just like the stocking stitch on a two row repeat but unlike the stocking stitch because both sides are identical you can very easily get distracted and then forget which is the right side which is Row one and which is the wrong side Row two so you could be doing this and back and forth I got this and I'll send some once at the door you get a phone call put your work down and you pick it up without that stitch marker gonna be like one or two and I I've lost count and you think you're on the right one and so and I'm doing it wrong and you end up either making your work look pinched or having that yarn over because you're not slipping the way that you should so I always put a stitch marker on the first row of a seat stitch just to make sure those edges are nice and even anyways a little disclaimer at the beginning but let's get started so the stage stitch Row 1 what we're gonna do we're going to slip the first stitch and the last stitch miss knitwise sorry with the yarn at the back so slip first and last knit wise you aren't the back so here we go don't go in as if to purl go hey I'm gonna knit that stitch no yarn at the back by the way and up right after doing that we're gonna seat stitch in the middle and what is seed stitch right as I've said in my previous lifeline video see stitch is when you knit the pearls and you purl them it's because if you knit the knits and purl the pearls then we end up is getting is a ribbed look but that's what ribbing is so if you see the next stitch well that's a myth so I'm gonna yarn forward and I'm gonna purl it now when I yarn back see that hopefully you guys are getting it that's a purl and I always look at pearls as a hangman's noose so here's the little head and there's the nice going around his neck and since that's a purl I'm gonna knit it right there's my knit it's a little V right it's like a little man's head with the vest on right see that little vest on so that's a knit on pearl in it and that's that's the difference all right ribbing is when you knit the knits and you purl the pearls seed stitch you knit the pearls and your provenance and that's why I said also in the previous video right now I'm gonna just see it stitching to the end until the to the last stitch but that's why I said in the previous video if you mess up on a seed stitch it's gonna stick out cuz if you knit a knit or your purl purl for that one stitch you've ribbed it and it's gonna stick out its gonna show so again here's a I know this is a purl because it looks like a little hangman so I'm knitting it and I know this one's a knit because it looks like a little man wearing a little little vest so we purl it so we are going to knit until that very last stitch no matter what that last stitch is guess what we're gonna slip it knitwise with that yarn at the back so here's a purl here's a knit right so that's a purl stitch we're gonna knit it the seed stitch tells me that the next one I need to purl but nope I'm going to yarns already at the back so I'm gonna slip it knitwise alright so now I'm turning my work I know I'm on row two why because the markers on one see a good thing I marked it now what do we do on Row two Row two all we're gonna do is we're going to make sure that we purl the first and the last stitch and seating everything else in the middle that's it just make sure you purl no matter what that first in that last stitch and the good news is that first stitch we're going to purl it alright so here's a purl and it's gonna feel weird because you have the yarn coming out from the second stitch that's okay go into that first stitch and we're gonna do the purl stitch so we went in a yard over and I pearled you look at the next stitch that's a purl so we're going to knit so now we're gonna seat stitch all the way across knit the pearls pearls of knits then again I'm gonna put all of this in the description box below I'm gonna have a PDF ready for you guys you guys can print it out can have it on hand that way you always know how to make your cell edges nice and neat yarn back we're almost there alright let's double check let's say I put it down so messed up where are we that's okay yeah that's a knit so guess what we're purling do you remember always do the opposite of what you see alright next one's a purl stitch so I'm yearning back to knit alright so last two stitches that's a knit even though you can't see it so I'm purling but don't knit that last one remember what we said we purl the first and then we purl the last and by doing so we just created that pretty little edge yeah that's it so as a review Row one you're going to slip the first stitch knitwise with the yarn at the back sleeve seed stitch in the middle and then you're going to slip that last stitch knitwise with the yarn at the back and then on the wrong side we're gonna purl that first stitch don't worry about that yarn coming out the second stitch everything okay because remember we slipped the last one so we didn't knit it so the yarn came out from here then we're gonna seed stitch to the very end and purl that last stitch and by doing so you get nice on this edges on your seed stitch and that's it we're done we've learned the seed we've learned how to create edges on the rib stitch on the stocking stitch and on the garter stitch and you want to know something funny every single one of these swatches was created on a stitch count of 16 right so even though the gut you look at the Garter and a stocking stitch and they're even look at this rib stitch you think no she probably cast it on fewer number stitches no I cast it on 16 stitches on us six needles and yet when you put it on top of the seed stitch it's about half the size that's what gage is so important I think I'm gonna do a video for you guys on Gage and because because it is really quite the difference anyway it's a little bit of a rant at the end hope you guys like the video hope you guys liked all the selvage edges and that they help out on your knitting if you did like the video leave a comment let me know what you think subscribe if you haven't and until next time happy crafting
