how's it going guys welcome to the channel if you are new here my name is zay and i know it's been a while since i posted my last video i had many plans of going somewhere new different places to travel to but just with this pandemic i felt like it was appropriate for me to to go out and and take that risk while some of my friends and family were heavily affected by it so i decided to not travel now for today's video it's going to be a military video if you're completely new to the military this video is for you we're going to be looking into how to get started what the process looks like i'm going to get help with a friend so let's do it all right guys just made it to my buddy's apartment it's going to help us explain the process of joining the air national guard hey guys this is techstar freeman with the 109th ayla twain welcome to my house let's go so you guys are interested in joining a national garden i'm here to help you the process all right all right guys so i'm with an expert right now with an air national guard he's been in for quite some time he's going to tell you his background here a little bit yeah so um my name is tyson freeman i've been with the ant national guard for eight years i actually just hit my ear mark um you know i've done i was a military police in the air national guard i went to uh i did i t communications and then i ended up transferring and picking up a new a new gig as uh as a recruiter my career in the air national guard has been amazing uh to say the least um and i've enjoyed every step of the way uh through my career and i'm definitely i can't wait to continue this career because uh i don't plan on leaving anytime soon and keeping that 20 years in also not a lot of people know about the air national guard even the people the active duty from air force doesn't know exists so what is air national guard that's an interesting question mr polanco and i'm gonna educate you folks at home what their national guard is just like i did with my uh my friend here dan national guard is a component of the united states air force um it's we always say you know members in the national guard we always say this that a national guard is the best kept secret in the military because you get both the benefits of an active duty member but at the same time you get the opportunity to be yourself at home what i mean by that is you get to serve part-time you know in the united states air force and then get the opportunity to still be at home or go home and spend time with your family and still work your civilian employment and a lot of reason why a lot of members join the international guard it's because most people either work for the state or they have the civilian employment they look for that second piece right or they look for that other entity of serving their country so this allows them to be able to serve their country but not doing it fully but just doing it part-time and that's that was the purpose of the international guard so that national guard belongs to the state whereas in the active duty and the reserve component belongs to the federal government if you're thinking what the process is like or what the requirements is sergeant freeman here is going to tell us what those qualifications are typically when you get a brand new person that calls right or a person that's interested or doesn't even know or even when i do a cold call right first question i ask is why are you interested in a national guard or if they they're not interested in giving a little background what their national guard is and once we move from there we go on to the questions that the typical questions that recruiters or human resources or talent acquisition we like to call ourselves sometimes will ask and one of the biggest questions that we ask is how old are you what is your date of birth right those are two part questions right and they're both the answer is still the same uh so there is an age requirement to join an air national guard and it's the age of 17 to 30 39 and you have to be turning you cannot be turned in 40 before you go to basic military training so that is typically the questions that we ask our members the next question that we te we ask our applicants or members that are interested in their national guard is the height of weight because at a certain height you have to be within a certain weight um in a certain weight class and also when with the high height and weight requirement that is once you get past a certain age if you don't meet the weight requirement or you maximize out at the age requirement excuse me we have something called bmi which is the uh body mass index measurement which allows members as a certain age to be able to take advantage of that of that bmi measurement that we have to allow members to be able to get into the international guard then the next question that we ask is citizenship right uh if the members if the individual is a u.s citizen it's easy-peasy but if they're not a u.s citizen then they have some kind of documents or permanent residence or a green card or naturalization it's just a different process but it doesn't it doesn't you know that shouldn't deter people from inquiring about the national guard um and then once that question is answered we move on to the next uh the next question which brings us to the fourth question which is your medical history medical history is not a big disqualifying factor but it just depends what kind of medical history that you've had so sometimes we'll ask if you've had any major surgery uh if you've ever prescribed any kind of medication or if you're currently on any prescribed medication and that based on that answer that you give your recruiter the recruiter will have to go through the regulation that that governs the united states air force or the international guard so that we can look and see what those regulations sit those what those regulations are excuse me to determine if you are a qualified member and if you're not sometimes it might disqualify you but it doesn't permanently disqualify you and what i mean by that is um so for example if somebody's taking some kind of medication right the regulation states that you have to be off that medication for a maximum of two years right so once that two years mark hit you can always reach out back to that recruiter and talk to the recruiter and start that process and sometimes the medication that you're that individual is taking is not governed by the regulation so you just that's a conversation that you have to have with a recruiter based on either the medication that you're taking or that kind of medical history that you have um but what like i said once again not every medical history is a disqualifying factor so i urge you guys to inquire about it that brings us to our fifth you know and final important pre-qualification question is your criminal history um you know we as their national guard right we we've had members that have had extensive background in the civilian side and prior military side right um and things happen in life but we want to have that open door policy where you could tell us what your criminal history is because one way the other we're gonna find out right and the as forward as you are with us the better off we can help you when we go through the process because i want we we recruiters we're just human beings just like yourself and we want to make sure that the process is smooth and easy for you as it is for us and that's what we're here to guide you to the process all right so once you once you qualify uh the recruiter is gonna set up an uh appointment is that correct yep to meet a base that's near near to you yeah yeah so uh so the process once we ask you those questions and you are a qualified applicant we then schedule an appointment uh now with everything that's going on with covid and uh social distancing mask wearing you know we could do we could there's multiple ways that we can set up the appointment typically we do a face-to-face appointment but if that's not a possible process for the individual we could do a zoom appointment and i myself have conducted numerous zoom zoom appointments with my applicant um and then once that that's done with that zoom appointment we require some documents right before that you know either uh for that for that initial appointment we require some some documents so that initial appointment the recruiter will sit talk to you kind of get to know who you are and who that you know that individual is what you're looking for um that kind of helps it allows the recruiter to be able to gauge what kind of job that this individual might be qualified for upon completion of the process right some of the questions that i recruited my ask is what are your interests right what are some of your hobbies you know what what do you do on the civilian side what are you looking to do um in the military what will be something that you might be interested in you know and that you know and like i said it allows a recruiter to get to know the individual that he or she is talking to so typically the documents that your recruiter will request from you will be your driver's license birth certificate high school diploma ged or college transcript and social security card that will allow the recruiter to be able to build what is called a profile for you as the individual once we build the profile the next step is finding out when the asvab and the physical will be to get in the international guard you need to take what is called the asvab which stands for the armed forces vocational aptitude batter test and you can google that information it's public knowledge um and look at some of what the test test requirements are and it's broken into four categories you have your electrical mechanical admin in general we'll schedule you for that test and then there's a second test that you need to take which is a physical the physical typically is a routine physical that you do at your physician or a pediatrician or a doctor this allows the military to see if your medical condition that you stated on your form that the question we asked you earlier is accurate that will all be done at meps which stands for military entry processing center and then with that do you is there any physical requirements that they got to do when they go to maps with the push-ups set ups and a mile and a half run so that's another misconception when we talk to members about physical everybody thinks that it's um you have to do actual physical work that's not what it really is there's no physical requirement so what i mean by that is there's no push-ups sit-ups mile and a half any of those physical training requirements to get into the air national guard so if a military recruiter an international guard recruiter tells you that you need to do a physical training test to get into the and national guard that is a false statement there's two ways to schedule your ass back we can do what is called a same day meaning if your recruiter feels is 100 confident looking at your educational background and you know how ready the individual is we can do what is called the same day same day as you going in taking the asvab doing the physical in one shot but if the schedule for same day is filled then we move on we move on to the next type of scheduling process that we have which is which is broken down so first we'll schedule you for your asvab you take your asvab once the score the scores come back which typically we find out about the score that same day um and usually the asvab test is around two o'clock in the afternoon at the meps which stands for military entry processing center um and it's about a three hour test so once you take that test and you complete that either call your recruiter or shoot them a text message which allows them to know that you're done with the test we can then go into your profile pull that information and see how well you did on your on your test we'll then either send that information to you or let you know via text um and then we move on to the medical piece where we'll then schedule you again to go do your physical and the physical typically is in the morning so you'll go in to maps again in the morning do that physical and by roughly around 11 o'clock in the morning you'll be completed once that's done same thing you text your recruiter call your recruiter let them know that you're done with your physical and then once that's done we kind of we just wait for your blood work because when you get there they do do some blood work to just make sure that you don't have any kind of diabetes or any kind of uh any kind of medical condition uh once that comes back we then bring you back in go over the results with you and then we start we we do what we call job shop we start looking at jobs so that initial appointment is very very important for us recruiters because that allows us to know what kind of person that we're talking to and what kind of job placement that we could put you in typically that's an applicant you have that option to pick a job that you're interested in as long as if that unit has that job and there is that manning for it so certain shop can only have x amount of people in that in that in that career field so if you come in based on our initial interview you love the mechanical side of of life right and we look at your test scores and you do qualify for something mechanic we'll look at what jobs that we have at that unit mechanically and we'll place you in there so don't ever be discouraged because you see a job that you like but that that unit doesn't have it you could find something else that might interest you at that unit and that's where that job shop comes into play so the recruiter will bring you to different shops that he or she thinks that you might be interested in and you'll talk to individuals to see what a day-to-day operation is like at that shop and then you'll also get to find out how long the training is how where you go for the training and uh what you know what those members do when even if they're not home on if they're not at their home station also to add on to that your background in the civilian world doesn't have to translate in the military the international guard so you could have a finance background in the civilian and the civilian side and then once you join the air national guard you can hey i want to be a mechanic i want to learn the aspects of the the job yeah so you could still learn and then they'll learn how to do the mechanics side that's very very true we have a lot of local law enforcement members at our unit that serve in the air national guard and they work full time on the law enforcement side but they like some they want to do something different right they don't want to do law enforcement in the air national guard so a lot of them tend to go into something mechanical or something medical or something i.t because that's something different from the day-to-day lives and the day-to-day operation and the one good thing about the national guard is that we do get a lot of funding to be able to run a lot of operations so some of these members that have full-time opportunities tend to raise their hand and say hey i i'm willing to volunteer to come and work at the base for a time being and a lot of members do that because of the tax benefit that they can take advantage of and that's something we could talk about in future videos all right so once you pick a career the most exciting part for a recruiter is what it was exciting for me and it's exciting for you and mainly for you because now
