installing pre-finished stair treads from stairtrez.com our first step is to remove the old carpet exposing the sub tread below now is the perfect time to drive some 2 inch deck screws into the sub tread to prevent squeaks in our new staircase check to make sure there are no exposed staples or nails on the sub treads remove any nails or hammer any exposed staples to ensure you have a nice clean surface to install your new retro treads next we'll mark the nose of the tread so we know where to cut measure the overhang and transcribe that mark to the top of the tread [Music] now we scribe a line to connect our marks giving us a straight cut line on the surface of the old sub tread next we prepare our circular saw to cut just deeper than the existing sub tread make the necessary adjustments and lock the depth guard in place [Music] remove any overhang of the existing sub tread by plunging the circular saw into the cut line and following it along the length of the old tread [Music] then check for any misses or overhang and clean that up as well once the noses are removed fill any holes in the skirt board and touch up paint as needed position a tool such as the step doctor or other angle finder into the staircase making sure the wings are square with the skirt board transcribe these marks and measurements onto a new retrorizer and cut to fit the new retro riser should extend to the top of the old sub tread but not above it [Music] apply a bead of glue to the back of the new retro riser the only recommended adhesive is pl premium from loctite lift the riser into place and secure with several finished nails [Music] repeat these steps until all risers are installed next we use our stair measuring tool to transcribe our cut marks onto our new pre-finished retro treads as before ensure the wings are completely extended against the skirt boards [Music] mark the surface of the new pre-finished retro tread and cut to fit check your cuts by dry fitting the tread in place [Music] next check the width of the existing sub tread and transcribe this measurement on the bottom side of your new pre-finished retro tread cut the depth of your pre-finished retro tread to match the width of your old sub [Music] tread check your cuts by dry fitting in place if everything is a tight fit apply a bead of pl premium to the underside of your new pre-finished retro tread tap the tread in place using a rubber mallet and secure the corners using two inch finish nails [Music] next we'll install cove molding on the underside of the new nose having our cove molding separate allows the cove to bend and flex around any abnormalities along the old riser simply cut the cove to length and secure with 18 gauge finish nails [Music] repeat these steps until all the old treads are covered with your new pre-finished retro treads use our pre-finished touch-up sticks to fill nail holes and chips any remaining gaps can be caulked and painted as necessary our pre-finished retro treads are ready to walk on as soon as they're installed and our durable finish will last for years to come call or visit us online at stair dash treads dot com for more information
