in today's video we're taking a look at how to install a wall cabinet easy and simple [Music] this is so simple anyone could do everything that we use on the video we're gonna leave a link on the description so today you woke up like putting things on a wall don't worry here at the starter box team we've got your bath the first thing that you're gonna need is a wall the second thing is a cabinet and the third thing yourself and hopefully a helper so this is a time where you call watson to help you out for tools you're gonna need a tape measure a pencil cabinet screws a stud finder unless you know where your studs are at a level or your eyeballs a drill and the drill bit the same size as the screws that you're going to use now that we got the grocery list out the way we can start with the video so today we're replacing shelves so if you have anything on your walls you want to go ahead and remove that if you already have cabinets on the wall or shelves that could be a guide to know where your studs are at if not the first thing that we want to do is locate the studs on the wall where you're going to place the cabinet but before we do that you want to choose the height where you want to install the cabinets if you already have cabinets on the wall you might want to choose the same height but if not usually from 50 inches to 60 inches is an average sometimes 54 is a standard in our case we're choosing 60 inches and this is the measurement where the bottom of your cabinet is going to be and we choose this amount because we're gonna have the washer and dryer at the bottom but also remember you want to consider the height of the people that live in the household now depending on your wall size you want to write this measurement on the wall in three different locations in our case we have a small wall so two locations is enough now using a long level or a piece of wood or a guide rail now just like connecting the dots you want to draw that line from left to right or from right to left another way to find a stud is if you have an electrical outlet on the wall there's usually a stud to the left or to the right of the outlet something that you can confirm with a stud finder so to get a head start on our stud finding we can usually say that at the corners there are studs so we go ahead and mark that we take out our stud finder and if you want to see our complete guide on how to use a stud finder we'll leave a link for that video on the description so using the stud finder we confirm where that stud is at and the stud finder works by perception of depth so you want to make sure that you place the stud finder where there's no stud so we start away from the corner and start working ourselves to the corner until we hear a beep once we do we go ahead and mark if we notice that the stud is not right in the corner like in our case then we start from the corner and work ourselves to the previous mark that we did on the wall and there in the middle is the stud so now depending on the building code where you live or how tired the workers were when they built your house is going to be the space between each stud where we live 16 inches is about right so from the middle of the stud we should be able to measure 16 inches to the middle of the next stud so using those 16 inches as a guide we go ahead and place the stud finder where we think there's no studs and start working towards the stud remember when you place the stud finder on the wall you want to press the button hear the beep and then start moving without letting go of the button once we see the beep then we mark now to find the other side of the stud we go on the other side of the mark enough space away that we could find the other side we basically repeat the procedure and mark once we have that one then we can do the 16 inches again to the other side and repeat the procedure all the way until we find all the studs on that wall [Music] so you can see that the stud was to the left of the outlet [Music] we can go ahead and draw the studs until we get to our height line [Music] you can take a step back and admire your artwork now that we dirtied the wall with pencil marks we want to go ahead and measure our cabinet to see its size in our case ours is 36 inches now that you have that measurement you want to decide where you want to put your cabinet do you want to choose the right corner the left corner in the middle or anywhere you want at the end of the day you are the king queen both or none of your castle in our case we're choosing the left side in the corner and we choose that side because to the right side we have the outlet plus the plumbing for the washer machine now that you chose where you want to place your cabinet you want to make sure that you have studs that go in between the cabinet inside the measurements in our case inside the 36 inches because you want to screw the cabinet to the studs in our case we're going to have three studs inside the cabinets measurements so that's going to provide a secure hold for that cabinet not to go anywhere so going off the wall we want to go ahead and measure where the studs are located so our last stud is located 34 inches and a quarter from the left side of the wall and remember we're counting the middle of the stud where the screw is going to go the stud that's going to be in the middle of our cabinet is at 18 inches 5 8 and our last stud that's gonna be to the left of the cabinet is at two inches and a quarter now we're going to transfer these measurements to our cabinet but first you're going to notice that your cabinet has a lip on each side so that means from the front it has 36 inches but when you measure the back it has less in our case it has one eighth on each side now comes the most important part of the whole install and it is triple confirming what side of the cabinet it's going to go to which side even though that in many cases you can flip the cabinet around and have it face the other side you don't want to have the marks on the wrong side so we're marking here what would be our left side which is the corner of the wall now that we established that very important detail we can start transferring the measurements to the cabinet so starting from the marked side we can go ahead and start with the first measurement so when measuring the wall we got two inches and a quarter and we want to mark this at least three to five times on the cavity from the top going down all the way to the bottom and we do that because we're going to create a line that lets us know where the middle of the stud is located at in comparison to the cabinet [Music] we go ahead and repeat the same process where we had 18 inches 5 8 we repeat multiple times and then we create the line our last measurement we had 34 inches one quarter we repeat again and we draw a line now we have where the studs are gonna fall on the cabinet now that we have lines on the cabinet and on the wall we should go ahead and make more now we choose where we're gonna place the screws depending on how big your cabinet is you wanna go from two on each stud to three if you have a very big cabinet like a pantry you can go all the way to five and we choose where we're gonna put the holes by measuring the height of your cabinet in our case it's 23 inches and a half now we choose three measurements that are going to keep us away from the edges of the cabinet if you have any inside shelves you want to verify for that as well because the last thing you want is to drill in a shell or or notice after you put your cabinet up you don't have space to put the screw because you have a shelf in the way in our case this unit does not have shelving so we know anywhere that we place would be good enough we're going to choose easy numbers the first mark is going to be at the 4 inch mark our second mark is going to be at the 12 inch mark and our last mark is going to be at the 20 inch mark we want to repeat that for all the other studs [Music] you want to get your cabinet screws your drill and your drill bit you want to reconfirm that your drill bit is at least the minimum size of the screw but never bigger than the head because the last thing you want is your screw to go right through the hole and have nowhere to grab now that we confirm that we want to go ahead and make the holes that go all the way through in the center of both lines a pro tip before making your other holes you want to verify that your screw fits in the hole if everything looks good you can keep making the other holes now that we have all the holes on the cabinet we can go back to the wall as a pro tip we like to place a piece of wood on the height line to carry the weight of the cabinet and this will specially come in handy if you're working by yourself and also if your helper watson does not have the same strength you have this will definitely make both of your jobs easier but most importantly it would confirm that you have all the studs correctly and remember we're always gonna screw in the middle of the stud using the same screws for the cabinet is gonna give you the best idea once we do that we tug a little bit on the wood to make sure that it is secure so that means when you place your cabinet you know you're good as well because the last thing you want on any kind of day sunny or cloudy is to die or go from a cabin at work to having to take watson to the hospital for a cabinet falling on their head we go ahead and place the cabinet on top of the wood make sure that you have the side that goes to the left to the left and the one that goes to the right to the right because all the weight is on the wood by placing the middle screw should be able to hold the entire weight of the cabinet rendering watson useless after that but always great for moral support so now comes the easy part this is where you take your drill and screw away until you place every screw on each hole your cabinet should be secure now [Music] we can go ahead and remove the wood from under it [Music] you can pat yourself in the back for a job well done you've become the ultimate warrior of the cabinet hanging process don't forget if you liked the video please give us a thumbs up that really helps if you have any questions place them in the comments section below
