all right in this video I'm gonna teach you guys how to prep your floor and install floor leveler and this is incredibly important because if you get these techniques wrong you're gonna have cracking and breaking and noisy steps for the rest of your life so stay tuned [Music] hey Jeff from Ottawa design a build here we're back on site today working on a basement bathroom that's designed to help someone aged at home and we've had to open the floor to put in our plumbing and of course we did a rough concrete patch but today we are going to prep and clean this up and prime it and put in floor leveler now floor level or is really important and there are a lot of kinds so when you go to the store and you're asking for floor level or best to know exactly what you're going to be using as far as materials and products in between all your steps so right here let's talk floor level or if you're on bare concrete and you only need to put in the primer there's a special primer for that not going to be an issue for you see this paint that give it an hour or so to dry pour your floor leveler the kind of leveler you use is going to depend on how fast you want it to dry and whether or not you want to have to sand the edges so if you're using a floor level because you're putting down a sheet final floor you want to use the kind that sands so make sure you go to a place where you can get that kind of product if you're putting down tile may not be necessary but you want to have something that runs nice and smooth and thin that you can trowel and have some workability time if you're going down with a heated floor system or something like that first minused not really all that critical you just want to use enough to get rid of the dips and valleys but for us in this particular situation we're going down with vinyl plank and it's a thick one it's a high-quality product so I have to use floor level or a to get rid of all the ridges and bumps and B to help get rid of a bit of the valley effect that's in this floor and because I'm on a painted floor surface that's not epoxy I'm going to be using eco Prime grip from mat pi this is my product right here now I use this on a regular basis so I get it in pale I'm only gonna use a little bit today because I just need to prime around my fresh concrete and on the concrete itself the leveling system using this is Mapai product as well again I liked by all my products from one supplier because I know that they've been designed to work together try your best not to do too much shopping around and mix them all up this one's a high-performance quick set and that's fine for me because it's a self-leveling but it's a quick set it isn't going to be pouring down my floor drain in the middle of my room alright so as far as process is concerned it's just about the same as anything else make sure the area is clean so we've been doing some mud work here and I've got mud all over the floor so I just got to get my sponge with my water and I want to just remove the mud from the area that I'm going to be priming because I'm looking for about as much adhesion as possible I'm not looking for 75% I'm looking more like for 95 to 100 so I really want to make sure that this is clean first so the trick to doing this really is just be liberal with your sponge you know get the water in there you bought all your fresh concrete to be really nice and wet because it will bond much better turn your sponge over dab I would all the extra water alright so once you're done getting everything nice and wet and cleaned up ready to pray there are two ways to paint a floor like this one is to put it in a in a tray and then paint traditionally you'll load the roller up but I find my favorite way to do is just to pour it out and then distribute it okay so this is eco friendly system so you don't have to wait for the floor to dry it's actually better if you don't because you want this to get into all of those areas it's a little thick and syrupy so we're just going to take a small nap roller this is not my favorite kind not lint free so it's good for this kind of situation and we're just gonna work this primer around first of all over the fresh concrete okay and we're gonna make sure it's all and all the nooks and crannies we can load the roller up a little bit push it in that back corner don't worry about getting it on the wall it isn't going to matter we're gonna put flooring in baseboards they're still so now that we haven't done on the concrete patch itself I'm gonna put on my stick and I'm going to just manipulate this stuff into a broader area all over the floor alright sometimes life is that simple first you get it wet and then you let it dry so we've been waiting about an hour for the primer to dry we put a fan on it just to help make sure depending on the temperature of the floor and conditions of the atmosphere it can be an hour or maybe even two depending on thick it went on so best to generally wait until it's dry you don't have to do overnight but definitely give it time to that's at least tacky what we're gonna do is read the instructions on your your product because it tells you what to mix how much water and this isn't a suggestion folks this is like science when you're dealing with this this is not like that quick set you know cement for doing a ceramic tile or something this stuff here is quite picky it'll go from incredibly stiff to incredibly runny with just a handful of water so you got to get this right now what we got going on is 50-pound bag takes six liters of water it's actually five point eight eight tough to do on a job site so let me give you an idea here we're gonna put in one liter of water and what I do is I buy pail that have the measurements on it so I'm gonna pour out from six to five you're supposed to have clean potable water and on a job site that means not too darn disgusting now I want to put in twenty percent of this bag my experience is that much we're gonna go from a fifty pound to a 40 pound bag now when I'm mixing this because I made it a lot I'm gonna know for sure if you're doing this for the first time and you want to make sure that it's perfect I might suggest you just use the whole bag make a 50-pound bag at a time in a pail that can hold all those contents and then you're sure not to have a problem because you don't want to mix this more than once and you don't want to mix the wrong consistency so start off slow work that water in there because it's awfully clumpy and then once it starts to really make sure then you can turn up the feed [Music] okay so I'll let you have a look at this that is it seems really soupy and it's supposed to it is a self leveler flow and it'll find all the little nooks and crannies I need to get filled so it doesn't take a whole lot of work now remember primarily we're trying to fill and clean up the rough area we've primed a large area outside of the area we're trying to clean up because of this propensity to self level and flow so I want to do is start pouring this out towards the back okay we're sure you get it all in the back corner there this is all experience I kind of have a real good idea how much of this I'm gonna need from that now in my particular case I should mention I'm going back with the vinyl tile it's very thick I don't need to have this perfect I just need to have this so I'm not gonna have an uneven area because when I do mount the toilet to this floor I don't want to have it rocking around so I don't have any problem make sure I've stretched it around and found oh this roughs concrete area okay once I've helped helped it to level out properly I can take a look at areas where like that that's perfect I'll just push it all back in okay you gonna help it out a little bit and then push it back to the middle push the leveler back into the general area there we go and then by all means just let it dry if I come back tomorrow and I find that there's a couple of bumps sticking out I'll just go get my hammer and my chisel and take those ridges off and I'm not going to do another application but this is just so that you're prepped up and ready to go if you're doing this for doing a tile job you can sand around the outside for vinyl you can add another layer that's even a little bit thinner again after the fact there's options here you can do multiple layers without priming again but you have to have the primer to make sure that this stuff bonds okay so that's really all there is to know it's not rocket science but if you gotta follow the instructions thanks for joining us today on my basement bathroom we're talking cement 101 and how to get prepped for finishing your flooring I'm Jeff from Ottawa design and build and if you
