hey welcome back to the channel so chromebooks are a lot more versatile than a lot of people give them credit for and you can actually run a wide variety of apps on most chrome os devices that's what we're going to be talking about today i'm going to be talking about how to install apps on chrome os i'm going to cover a few different areas such as native chrome os apps android apps linux apps and some windows applications i have videos that go into much more details on most of these areas so i'll put a link down in the description and probably up in the corner if you like informative videos like this make sure you subscribe and hit that notification bell and as always leave any questions or comments down in the comment section below as we go through this the first area i want to talk about is native chrome os apps these are applications that can be run on any chrome os device and contrary to what some people may believe many of them can be used in offline mode so you don't need to be connected to the internet so let's jump onto the chromebook and i'll show you how these work all right so here we are on the desktop of the chromebook and this is super super easy all we're going to do is hit the search button start typing in web store it's the first item that pops up on the list go ahead and launch that now from here you can select these different items you can go through extensions themes apps or games and then you can just browse through the store like you would for any other app store find the item you want to install and install it but if you know the name of what you want to install like say we want to do the citrix workspace client we can just start typing the citrix here click on the apps and we can see the citrix workspace click on that and add to chrome most of these just take a few seconds to add and then we can either launch it from here or if we go back into our menu we can see that we now have an application launcher in here it's as simple as that it works for all those different categories and it works on every chromebook because it is a core functionality of chrome os the next area we're going to look at is running android apps these are the same apps that run on your android phone and most recent chrome os devices support android applications but you may need to turn it on first so let's head back over to the chromebook and i'll walk you through how to turn it on and install applications from the google play store all right so here we are back on the chrome os desktop and like i said most recent chromebooks are going to have the ability to run android apps but it's possible that yours may not support it or it may be turned off to check if you have it or turn it on all we're going to do is click down by the clock down here go into settings and then click on apps down in the lower left here you should see this google play store option if you don't see that then your chromebook is probably not set up to use google play store or may not be capable of it if you see it and it says turn on that means it's not activated all we're going to do is just click that turn on button and it's going to walk you through the initial questions here and then just take a minute to set up just let it do its thing at this point okay so now it's all set up and it is getting ready to launch here so there we go it's all set up and installed the google play store and launch us right into that store you can see it's just like on a android phone that we can install any of these applications we can search for games and install whatever we want to install something say we want to install microsoft word here all we're going to do is just click on it install it now the nice thing about these android applications is if you have an sd card set up in your computer or you're using the external drive or something like that you can install these to that external storage so it doesn't use your internal storage if you have a chromebook that has you know very low storage on the device all right so our applications installed and we can either launch it from here or if we go into our menu again along with all our other applications that we've installed if we move to the bottom here we can see our android applications so we can just click on that and launch right into the application that's all there is to it again if you don't have the option for the play store in settings then your chromebook is not capable of it otherwise you should be all set next up is installing linux applications now again most recent chromebooks provide linux support and allow you to install some applications in linux this too needs to be turned on and if your chromebook does not have this option it may not support it this does not exist on every single chromebook that's out there so let's head back over to the chromebook and i'll show you how to set that up and i also have a much more detailed set of videos on using linux applications on a chromebook so again those are going to be down in the description and i'll have a playlist linked up in the corner here as well all right here we are once again on the chrome desktop and this time we're going to install the linux applications again this is one that may or may not be supported by your chromebook most recent chromebooks have this ability built in again to turn this on all we're going to do is go into the settings again and you should see linux beta down at the bottom here click on that you can also go through apps and get to it through here as well but if you click on that and then click turn on it's going to walk you through the setup just hit next on this first one you can choose whatever name you want for your to use for the name for your linux installation and you can also set a custom disk size i would recommend if you have a chromebook with enough storage space that you increase this a little bit because some of those linux apps can take up quite a bit of space i'm going to dedicate 20 gigs right around 20 gigs worth of space to my linux setup just click install it's going to go ahead and set up that virtual machine create the container and set up linux inside of there and then when that's all done i'll come back and walk through the rest of the steps here okay the setups all done and when it's done it automatically launches this terminal now this is a linux terminal the first thing we want to do is do a quick update in here so just type in sudo apt update this is going to go out and look for updated software for your linux setup you can see that it did find a few things so we're just going to do sudo apt upgrade now we're going to hit yes and just let those upgrade that's just files that have been upgraded since the installer for this container was created and it just it's just like updating any other operating system so we're going to let that run and just update those files and then again i'll come back all right so there we go that update is all done now to install applications within linux you can either use the command line or you can use a graphical interface to set up that graphical interface i'm not going to show you in this video but i do have a link i'll put up in the corner right now and also link down in the description that shows you how to install kind of an apps linux app store uh that you can install stuff graphically for right now i'm just going to show you how to do it from the command line so let's say you wanted to install the image editor you could just type in sudo apt install it's going to go out and find that software and this lets you know all the pieces of the application that are going to be installed and how much space it's going to use just go ahead and hit yes and it's going to go and install that then when it's installed we'll come back and i'll show you how to launch that all right so now we have the software installed we can either launch it from here just by typing in or again if we go into our menu when you set up linux and install some applications it's going to create this linux apps folder here you can see the terminal that it does by default and then we have gnu image manipulation program or so we're going to go ahead and launch that and you can launch it just like you would any other application at this point it acts just like a native app in chrome os and we can do all our photo editing inside camp here again there's easier ways to do this if you don't like the command line check for that video that shows you how to install the app store and there is a huge selection of software that's available for linux that drastically increases the usability of your chromebook all right so now let's talk about running some windows applications in chrome os this is seriously hit and miss as to what you'll be able to get working and there's a lot of ways to go about doing this but i'm going to be showing you uh using a product called crossover which has recently been updated with specific chrome os support crossover is not free but they do have a two-week trial period and it is by far the easiest way although not the only way to get windows applications running on a chromebook again this is hit and miss as to what you're going to be able to get working so let's jump back over to the chromebook setup crossover and show you how to install apps through there all right here we are one more time and this time i'm going to show you how to install some windows applications on your chromebook i stress that some because this is very hit and miss it depends on the capabilities of your chromebook it depends on the windows application that you're trying to install some windows applications just cannot be installed in this way now if you haven't done so already you want to make sure that you go in and turn on the linux beta support like i showed you how to do in the last section so if you haven't done that yet go back and do that first and then come back here once we get that turned on we're going to go in to our web browser and go to code weavers.com crossover i'll have a link down in the description and then we're just going to scroll down to the bottom here to crossover for chrome os now again this is paid software but they do have a free trial so we're going to download that free trial just enter in your information here and then once you get that entered in just hit that the download trial now give it a few seconds it's a pretty small file pretty quick download for me it only took about takes about 15 seconds of course that depends on how fast your connectivity is but once it's all done we can show it in the folder here in our download folder and we can just double click on that and go ahead and hit the install click ok and you can see the installation progress down in the bottom here just let that finish up and do its thing and then we'll come back okay so as you can see we are all done now it's installed it says it's available in your terminal there all may also be an icon in your launcher which there will be again like i showed you in the last section if we go into our launcher and go down to this linux apps we can see crossover in here go ahead and click on that to launch it what it's doing right now is it's kind of firing up that linux container and running it within that container and here we are now to install something it's as simple as clicking this install windows software so now at this point we can search for the application that we want to install so let's say we want to install microsoft word we type in word and we can see all the different versions of microsoft word now for something like word you're going to need to have the installer i'm not going to suggest how you get that but you have to have that installer in some way to install this some of them will go out and get the installer for you for instance let's say we want to look for like libreoffice which is a very good free office application we can click on that and we can see up at the top that the select application select installer and select bottle are all checked so that what that means is that it kind of pre-configured that for us and it's going to go and get the installer from the website and set it up for us so we're just going to hit continue here and install now if we didn't have that if any of these were unchecked so say select the installer was unchecked when it got to that section of the installation it would ask us for the location of that installer and that's where when you're installing something like you know office or work you know any of the office components or most of the games that are available in here you would need that installer to be able to install that application so this is telling us it's going to need some additional linux packages just click yes to let it download those now because we're using the trial version this pops up when it gets toward the end of the install we're just going to click try now and it has some additional components that it needs to install for us it's going to do it automatically all right so now crossover has created the container installed all the extra software that it needed downloaded libreoffice and started the libreoffice installer from this point it's just like installing it on windows you're just going to go through all these uh options here and then it's gonna go and install it as if you were on a windows machine so let's let this finish and then i'll come back again and we'll try to launch it the installation did finish so we can go ahead and just skip this step even though it says there was an error there probably wasn't but we'll find out soon enough now it's just building the menus refreshing everything so that we'll have this application available so here we have inside crossover we have the libra office suite with all the individual applications but again if we go into our menu and go into our linux apps we also have it all in here so if we want to do the libreoffice writer we can just click that now the reason why it's showing in linux apps even though it's a windows application is because these you utilize a thing called wine and wine is running within linux so even though this is a windows application it still shows up in that linux apps folder because the ability to run this application is leveraging linux and there we go here is the windows version of libreoffice running on our chromebook running through crossover here um it it is utilizing wine so technically you could do this yourself and create the wrapper and all that stuff to get this working yourself and there's other ways to do this but crossover is by far the easiest way there's other options to get some games and applications on chrome os like streaming services remote desktop running citrix to connect to a virtual desktop things of that nature they're beyond the scope of this video but i will be doing videos on all those in the future what i showed you today covers a wide variety of applications they all run locally on the chrome os device and vastly increase the usefulness of your chromebook chromebox or whatever you're using now hopefully you found this useful or informative if you did hit that thumbs up if you really liked it hit that subscribe button and again if you have any questions or comments make sure you leave those down in the comment section below thanks so much for stopping by and i'll see in the next one
