How to Install and Re-Key a Kwikset SmartKey Exterior Door Knob

hey guys this is emily lopez and today i am going to show you how to install a kwikset smartkey exterior doorknob um this is not a sponsored video um unless you want to get a hold of me quick set give me a call i haven't worked with you but um i really like these products because as a landlord with a smart key function it's really easy to re-key between tenants so i after i found these i always put these in all my rentals because it's a really quick re-key process so i'm going to show you how to install the door knobs so let's get started okay so a doorknob for the most part is pretty easy to install if you already have the hole in place that you're going to install in there's a couple things i want to show you with this particular door knob but most doorknobs are going to have this function i'm going to scoot this up a little bit so you can see so when you put this piece which is the piece that's going to slide in you want to make sure that see how it has the bend that the bend is toward the curvature where the door is going to close so the door closes that way i have this curvature that way because you want it to be able to hit the door and be pushed in right it's the other way around it's just going to hit it and stop so you got to make sure you face that the right direction the other thing is depending on the age of your door doors were door knobs were sometimes mounted at different depths as far as the holes so i don't know if i can get this out now that i've watched it in there i see because i want to show you this is the right depth for this door but if it wasn't you have this option right here see you can make this like that so i just slid this over this comes down and up and locks in and it makes it have this length and then if you go like that then it's longer so if this hole is further this way you can adjust it out but for me it works to be shorter like that so i have that this is in the center which is what you want i have my piece aligned actually there unfortunately the whole that was their fit sometimes it doesn't you have to chisel out this exterior piece here a little bit to fit better but that worked out okay for me so happy day so now i'm gonna slide this back so i have more in view so now i have my door it came like this in the package you to get it loose are going to turn so if you see in there see how it kind of grabs the screws so you can take the screws all the way out and screw them in or i'm trying to show you you can just twist it like that and it comes apart so i'm of course going to put the part with the key outside and that's going to slide through but you got to make sure that that this c this curve part goes through that curve part to be the right direction so i'm going to push that in because it makes it a little easier to enable it and we're going to go like that now what i can do because we have as i showed you see that little curve and that little like edge piece where it could slide in that's why i was able to just twist the screws out so yes of course a lot of doorknobs you can just screw through but you can put it and finagle it in and then tighten the screws so i'm going to hold that up i'm going to line that up with the curve right there but then i'm just going to finagle my screws into place now see those screws i was talking about how i just twisted it into latch now i'm gonna tighten those screws i like to keep a set of tiny tiny screwdrivers like those really thin ones with the thin handles and the thin tips um my locksmith showed me that one time and i thought it was a good tip i keep them in my tool bag which is not here um but it's easier to get in and not scrape on the edge of right here but uh i don't have it with me right now so i'm just gonna use my normal screwdriver and i'm just gonna tighten my screws i like to do side to side a little bit like almost like a tire when you're replacing it so you're not doing one all tight and then the other side kind of doesn't line up i like to go back and forth when i'm tightening something even if it's just a doorknob a little bit tighter just based on looking at the door from the outside tighten up so then you can lock it unlock it okay so then i'm going to take my other screws that came with my kit and i'm going to put those through these holes here that hold this piece on if you only have a screwdriver you don't have a drill you can do that you don't have to have a drill to do this so lock unlock but now hold on i'm going to show you why i love the smart key brand and why these are what i put in my rentals hold on this is the coolest part wait for it okay so now i'm looking at the outside part of the door these are the keys that came with the lock so that's what open locks it unlocks it right okay have you ever wanted to put exterior locks on a house and you can buy the deadbolt kits and they come in like packs of three sets of deadbolts that are on the same key if you want to have them re-keyed you have to call a locksmith i don't know about where you live but in my town one a locksmith is expensive right it's a really specialized skill two there's only one locksmith in my town and sometimes it takes days and days and days to get them so when i used to do property management for other people and we had to re-key a property quick because we had a new tenant moving in we didn't have days to wait for a locksmith to show up or maybe not show up so obviously you have to change keys between tenants sometimes there's an emergency and you have to change keys to make sure somebody that shouldn't have access to your property doesn't so here's the cool thing if you have a smart key um let's see yeah the smart key security feature and it has you can tell because if you look at the lock it has that little divot next to it here is all you have to do to change it to another smart key key so i want this to match the front door which i have in place so you are going to put your key just like normal into the lock and turn it to the side you take their little tool they have some you can buy that have like a red handle on them too but it's just that little you're going to put that in there push it and depress it then i'm going to pull that key out now i'm going to take the key that i want it to match this is another quick set key it has to be compatible but this is the front door key that i want to match it put this in guess what guys you know it's so cool this is now the key to the house this old key doesn't work anymore isn't that cool now i can save these keys if i want to use this set on something else and i can re-key to this key in the future if i ever want to use these on because these have never been used on anything now if i want to use them on another property but now this back door right matches my front door and this one which i've already done in the past now they're all on one key system and i was able to do it myself and save myself a ton of time and money so this is a really cool product you guys um especially if your landlord they're very very handy this is what it is it has to have a smart key security feature again not sponsored in
