what's going on it's Danny the plumber I'm at this beautiful house here in Brentwood Los Angeles California and today we're gonna be installing the water heater area a thermal expansion tank and in this video we're gonna go over the reasons why you install a thermal expansion tank and of course how to do it let's get started is our 75 gallon water heater it currently does not have a thermal expansion tank I've got a new one right here I've got the strap kit also with me and a thermal expansion tank to go anywhere on the cold water side the cold water is the one over here and we're just gonna be mounting it right here right after the shutoff valve which you can see right there all about on the wall into the studs somewhere the reason we need a thermal expansion tank is if you step outside here we have a pressure regulator this creates a closed system and so if thermal expansion tank is required by code again an expansion tank is needed when the system is closed meaning it's not exposed to atmospheric pressure and so some situations would include a pressure regulator like the one that's right under there that Lockbox that's why I'm putting it on today check valves and backflow preventers and things like that that's the reason why we install expansion tanks so first up I'm going to test the PSI should be around 50 with this pressure regulator I'll draw off a little water put on my psi gauge and we're reading about 50 psi 50 watts thermal expansion tanks are pre charged in approximately or exactly 20 psi so we need to match the incoming water we need to pump this guy up to 50 psi and that's done right here I'm screwing that and just like a bicycle we're gonna pump it up with a bicycle pump - exactly 50 or 51 psi we're gonna do that now I didn't bring my compressor with me today but using a compressor as much ease next step we get our strap into the studs we found the studs with the stud locator and I'll get the strap in there those to attach it [Music] the thermal expansion tent connected with the straps real nicely we have to cut in a team because we need a second male adapter so I cut in me tea with up 1 inch outlet for the water heater or Inlet and a 3/4 up on top for Flex connector there's only one expansion tank so I'm gonna put these these two flexes together now okay we got the two flex connectors on there mm-hmm now we're ready to get the water back on once the water is completely wrong we are going to relieve some of the air from the water heater and the hot water system by taking a hose and putting it to the outside of the house just so if any air flushes out of there we don't want any air pockets especially when we have a recirculate er line pump in which we forgot to mention this disconnected prior to working on this thermal expansion top all right I'm going to check for leaks everywhere appears to be good okay that's it that's how you install an expansion tank please leave a comment below hit that like button and it really helps with the channel and don't forget to subscribe thanks a lot guys have a great day
