hey I'm Eddie and welcome to another video so in this video we're going to be installing a brand-new Ridge Rider winch into my Patrol so super cheap got in contact with me and they sent me out one of their winches to try out and make a video about installing it so I will go ahead and do that so first let's talk about in my opinion the first modification for touring let's say you want to make to your vehicle is installing a bull bar so as soon as you get out of town you know a couple hours out of town and you're driving at night or early in the morning it's not if you're gonna hit a kangaroo it's when so when I do my birds real trip I hit a rule out there it's just it's just a cop call us of life and did no damage to the car because I had the bull bar on there and no damage to the root because he just I slowed down a little bit I had a bit a time I was only going 80 and the road just kept jumping a lot so it was a big boy so fingers crossed I didn't hurt him and now you've got your terrine covered when you start doing more trips by yourself or even with a mate the first thing when you start going off-road what you want to do you're gonna install a which why because when you're a novice you're gonna take on things that you probably shouldn't be or don't know that you haven't got the skills or the tyres to go take on a big bog hole or like I did Blake and I were on a trip and we went down a very steep hill because we thought we were going the right way according to the map and the track just led nowhere so I had to spend about four hours with like using my winch because he didn't have a winch on his vehicle pulling both the cars up a steep hill so basically if we didn't have a winch on the car we would still be stuck there so it's a great mod that you can do to your car the first thing or the second after putting a bull bar or a winch compatible bar or a cradle or something like that to get you out of strife when maybe your skills aren't that great to be like oh no let's not do that because I'm not capable of being able to get through that bog hole or go down that steep track and get back up safely alrighty so here's our bridge rider winch in the box and briefly I want to touch on while I think it's a good idea to get the 12,000 pound winch as opposed to nine and a half thousand pound winch is because in my case I've got a heavy Neeson Patrol and when I was using the winch Blake didn't have a winch so I was pulling too heavy Neeson Patrol's up a steep hill no problem with the 12,000 pound winch so it's a bit overkill for just one car but maybe you pulling a caravan or you've got a camper trailer on or someone's winch has stopped working and you need to pull them up a hill too so you may also be wondering why I've taken out my perfectly good winch well it's a couple years old now and super cheap has given me a new one so in preparation for the video I've removed my old one and I'll give that to a mate who doesn't have a winch and I'll install this brand new winch so in the box we've got our instructions so have a read of these guys if you're not film familiar with with winches and this is a extension cable just for the remote we've got our fair lead which box up there where the Rope comes out this is our controller and this is the wireless remote for the controller so our control box here which you can mount this wherever you like I guess as long as the cables as long as the cables are long enough to reach the winch and your battery and if you want to hide this and not install it on the front of your bull bar up there you plug in your wireless remote and I think this takes it this yeah this takes a battery here and then you can do it wirelessly but it's always good to carry the cord just in case the battery goes and you're in a bit of strife I need to get it out so now control box is here and that's the cable for the controller or this is the extension cable and this is our plug but if you're just going to use the handheld remote plugged in let's go to our various nuts and bolts and down the bottom is our beautiful wing so we've got finding a rope on this this one here and a good reason for getting down in my rope is well first of all it's much lighter and getting the winch cable and if you're using this you don't necessarily have to have your gloves on because you're not going to get cut with I guess a bit of bit of the rope which is come loose and is a bit spiky alright so we've got our winch out of the box now I'm going to install it in my bull bar and this bull bar is a winch compatible bar but depending on the make and model of your vehicle so no mind I've got a 2016 Hilux it's got a bull bar on it that you need a winch cradle to install a winch car so basically it doesn't bolt up just like this so just check your bull bar or your winch compatible bar to see what you need so as the winch comes out of the box it's set up for more of a modern vehicle where you use a cradle so you've got your four mounting points down here and that will normally sit like that on the cradle and then the rope would come out the front now because my full bar has the bolts here and underneath here you can't see them but they're there's two bolts there and there and two up here so basically what I'm gonna have to do is install it so it's on its side like that which is perfectly fine but the problem that I then face is that the clutch here will now be at the back away from me so I would have to reach in over to change the clutch and I wouldn't necessarily be able to see what I'm doing so what I can do is I can remove this housing here and rotate it forward so the clutch is now at the front of the winch [Music] all right so I've pulled off the motor housing and basically so far it's just one two three allen key bolts take it off and this is where all your Grace's so it's a good idea every year to clean all this grease off we'd break clean up and then refresh all the grease and then you'll have lots and lots of years of life out of your winch if you take care of it so it's a good good thing to do is just take the winch out once a year regress that check no water's getting in this is like a bit of seal around here so make sure no water is getting in there and as well to keep your winch in good working order every month let's say like let's say you just do Turing trips in the car sitting for most of the year you don't want to go ahead out there and go to use your winch and you realize as it seized up so a little bit of maintenance is literally just every month get your winter controller pulley out 15 meters and put it back in and that just makes sure that the motor won't seize because it's been sitting in one position for such a long time so just do that take care of your winch and you should be good to go so I'm going to take out all these allen key bolts here and that will allow me to rotate the clutch lever so it's where I want it to be [Music] all right so now everything is bolted back on the tip for young players just relax don't use power tools on this just chilly out use your allen key you don't want to cross throwing anything because it's a waste of time cross running stuff ask me how I know and but this is going on nicely and then once you put everything back together you just want to check the operation of the winch so that it is free sprawling as it is now and then I engage it and it's not moving so that's working perfectly [Music] all right so before we get into lifting the winch up let's briefly touch on the wiring so it's incredibly simple but if you have it you can have any doubts just consult the instructions and it tells you everything you need to know but essentially you got your control box here and you're gonna have a long red cable this will go up to your starter battery now it's very important that you install it on your starter battery because when you're using your winch you want your motor running and you want full alternator charge to your starter battery because these will draw a lot of load and you don't want it drawing through your second battery because it is then choked by your battery isolator and you will not get the full potential out of the winch and you're just burning out your second battery for no reason so always run the motor and like the motor of the car and this goes on your starter battery which is the long red cable now you also get supplied with a long black cable this goes on the negative terminal of your starter battery and then the way it will work is one yeah so you got your cables coming out and you can chow box on your winch you've got one two three four terminals now it's as simple as the Yellow Jacket cable goes on the yellow one here the short black one goes on the black terminal here and then your short red cable goes on the red here and then your long black cable that has been supplied separate goes on the bottom terminal here Terminal A and there's a tiny skinny cable running from the control box that also goes on Terminal A so this will be essentially your neutral for the winch and that's how it works it's as simple as that but if you have any problems just consult the manual [Music] all right so now I've got the first three cables on the terminals of the winch and I've put the rubber boots over the top so now I just need to raise it up and you've got a little cutout section down here where you slide your not into and then the bolt goes through the bar [Music] all right so now we have our winch bolted up so literally just one two three four bolts on my bull bar and the reason we went to putting the all the all the effort of moving the motor housing is so that clutch is sitting nicely on top here so I can just reach in grab it engage it disengage it and now we've got our three back terminals on now I have great access to the front neutral terminal here so I'll just undo this bolt put our long cable on and then all we have to do is run our active and neutral up to the starter battery and mount the control box up yeah [Music] all right so basically we've just hooked up the active will the the red to the positive terminal on the starting battery and the neutral to the neutral terminal and just neatly cable-tied it down there did a loop on the excess slack of the neutral cable and she's done all right so to mount up this control box I recommend that you take these four screws off to get the bracket off and you can mark up your holes I've got two holes here already one of them's in a good spot so I can use one but I might have to redo all this one larger all right so using a square I've marked out the center mark over the punch out here and drew a line down there and then I've decided that on the bracket here I'll actually use that one and now that hole there just so that because these are slightly off-center then the control box is going to sit off-center [Music] all right so our install is complete I've got the Bosch plate on bolted back on now our control box is mounted up now we've got our rope out let's engage that's engaged engage the clutch and I'll start up the vehicle and we'll test out whether she works all right so there's our winch all finished and installed so now our winch is installed so that's just how easy it is to install the Red Ryder winch basically active and neutral or positive and neutral to your starter battery make sure you have your engine running when you're using the winch and you met your control box up wherever you're like you've got the option of a wireless receiver that's supplied with you and you could hide the control box in the engine bay if you chose to not put it on the front of the bull bar and then you just bolt your winch up to either the bull bar or a winch cradle if depending on the type of vehicle you have so basically now you've installed the winch it's actually not ready to use yet what you want to do is when you get to your fall drive destination before you start wheeling and need to use the winch what you want to do is you want to pull the bull the winch out hook it up to a tree make sure you use a tree trunk protector so you don't remember the tree hook it up to the tree under tension you want to be winching the vehicle towards the tree and spooling the rope on and what that does is if you go and use your winch now where I've just loosely put it onto the drum it'll bind up and get caught so when you go to use it it's just gonna the ropes gonna be bound up and it's gonna be more difficult to use so save yourself some time and just do that as a pre-trip check sort of thing as well make sure it's all working before you get into something too gnarly but yeah that's how easy it is to install so I hope you enjoyed the video if you did please give it a thumbs up if you haven't already subscribed to the channel and for more videos like this I'll see you on the next one [Music]
