the lawn as it gets closer to the street is really mostly weeds so we've been thinking about pulling it out and doing some kind of landscaping the least expensive and low-maintenance idea is to put in a gravel parking strip we're thinking that using the five eighths crushed basalt that we used for our RV driveway would look best to begin this project I purchased two four foot by 100 foot rolls of Vig row heavy duty weed control fabric and staples at Home Depot using steaks and twine I marked half of the area for removal of the grass roughly 72 feet long by four feet wide day four of digging out the sod manually I'm making some pretty good progress this is going to be eight and a half foot wide gravel strip instead of paying for our landscaper to do the job for me I decided to go ahead and work away at it myself well with everything shut down because the cove at nineteen and needing something to do as long as I do it slowly and carefully I'm good my neighbor across the street is using some of the sod to fill in these deep ruts in a steep Bank I find its icing aside using a flat blade shovel and this rolling motion is a lot more efficient than stomping on it less wear and tear on your foot and back get some of the weight on mostly weeds here in this section some of the roots are much deeper it's an 18 foot by 3 foot section to finish I should get this done tomorrow that's a lot of work last few pieces of sod to remove yep it's wide enough oh yeah that'll work I think it's great I'm prepping the area for installing the weed black fabric and the edging to do this I need to have at least four inches depth along the edge of the grass and along the driveway ideally along the road too to make it easier to work with I laid out the edging in the Sun warm it up and remove some of the tight curl finish up heating the depth for the edging nice and soft sand right here let's test out the deaf make sure it is deep enough for the hedging looks perfect maybe a little a little bit more gonna work some Roundup kill the weeds before we put the gravel down die weeds die the underground power telephone and communications cables have all been marked underground cables run right beneath my future gravel strip I'll just have to ask the delivery guy with the heavy dump truck to be careful and preferably not to put his wheels on this area now I'm ready to install the weed control fabric it's a windy day this will be challenging the instructions on the week control fabric say for best results install it with the shiny side up well unfortunately the shiny side is on the outside of the roll because that I can't just lay it down and give it a kick my wife's gonna come help me and we'll just have to walk it across the dirt and hope that the wind will blow us away oh there's a lot of force to that use this as a measurement roll number to six inches overlap anything is getting the bricks on it [Applause] staples are four inches so I'm I'm gonna use this as a reference for the overlap get at least six inches pretty tough to get this table sweet rocky in here [Applause] I found that using these nails work much better for attacking down the weed guard cloth especially where it's rocky I burned through a lot of staples trying to make it work next I'm gonna install the edging before the delivery of the gravel tomorrow that way I won't have to rake away the gravel and then install Eugene the directions on the edging said install the stakes no more than five feet apart I had enough to play some four feet apart so I staged them where they will be located that will make it a lot easier and faster I've never done this before this area is really rocky so I'm not sure how this is going to work how many rocks right there I think I'll come back to that one let's see if this one sticks they're gonna need something to hammer that down so I don't hit this nice edge on the top on a piece of pipe let me see if I can drive this in a little deeper yeah that way it'll be blows it'll be below the level the gravel I can always drive them deeper after the gravels delivered I need a second stake in between the two because of the bow few rocks any what I'm gonna do is use a old screwdriver and see if I can give it some wiggle room should do it there she goes now we've reached the end of the first section join it with the second section the inside ends of the edging is too curly to work with so I'm going to cut off a roughly two and a half feet or so and then join them together rough guideline for cutting already cut the other end with a hacksaw it works good so let's hope this does - I'm gonna resort to them late now a little encouragement so what I've discovered there is way too much curl at the ends of this edging to make a proper joint it just curls right into the sod so I cut about three feet off of the ends of the edging because it was too curled problem I'm having now is that the sod here is too soft and it doesn't allow it to match up very well so I need something solid behind it so I'm gonna try a scrap piece of this luxury vinyl tile it's waterproof and hard as a backing so the curl doesn't try to go into the loose side put on the jointer here before I pound it in helps a little bit little damage from the deer overnight well it took me about a week of hard manual labor to prepare the site as a gravel strip tomorrow morning the gravel arrives then the fun part is spreading it by hand
