today I'm going to show you how to add a remote control to a ceiling fan that doesn't have one already coming up this is a ceiling fan we have in our master bedroom above our bed and it works great to help in the summer keep us cool and in the winter and moves the heat around the trouble is when we lay in bed watching TV sometimes it dries our eyes as we're watching so we'd like to install a remote control that we can put on a nightstand and turn on the fan when we're going to sleep but have it all for watching TV the kit that I got here is on Amazon it's really not that expensive a little over twenty dollars but it comes with a receiver you can see here it's got the black and white wire on the one side is the power coming in and the other three are the power going out the remote has high medium and low settings as well as control for the light and the dimmer if you have a light kit which we don't and of course the instructions come with it to tell you exactly how to wire it and show you a wiring diagram on the back the first step is to turn off the circuit breaker then I'm lucky I already have mine labeled with second floor ceiling fans and lights and so that breaker is the one that I have to find even though I'm sure I have the right breaker I still take the wires out very carefully take off the wire nuts and test it just with a voltage tester to make sure before I touch any of the wires then I connect the white and the black ones to the input side on the receiver those are the ones coming out of the ceiling now the other three there's a white and a black which you're pretty trivial they hook up to the white and the black going to the fan the blue wire would get connected to the lighting kit mine is a black wire with a white stripe so I connect the two of them together just in case I ever add a lighting kit down the road now in case you have multiple remote controls for fans in the house you want to make sure they each have a unique code I just randomly picked a couple of dip switches and made sure they were the same on both the receiver as well as the transmitter then I stuffed the receiver into the housing and secured it with a screw turn the breaker back on and give it a test okay installed the 9-volt battery and let's give it a try haha success how about hi oh yeah well there you go that's how you put in remote control to any ceiling fan they're universal they're really inexpensive they're on amazon.com and I'll put the link in the video description below and it's perfectly quiet to which is very important for me in a bedroom situation but you could use this anywhere including in a very high ceiling where you really can't reach a pull chain so if your fan doesn't come with a remote you can get one for it real cheap thanks for watching visit my website handy dad TV for more great ideas and information be sure to subscribe to be the first to know when new videos are posted [Music]
