hi everybody david harper here in this video i'm going to teach you how you can identify and age genuine antique pieces of pottery and porcelain in a matter of seconds these are trade secrets and rules of fun which will help you buy instantly bargains at antiques fares yard sales or car boot fares and make money if that's what you want to do or just put a date on the pieces you have at home so i've got three antique pieces in front of me all were made in england i've chosen english pieces because these are the most common the rules of thumb apply to all countries so they come from different time periods you need to be able to date them if you're out about buying instantly to make that decision whether or not you should buy it you can do your research on where it was made who it was made and what it's worth later if it's a bargain price and it's a genuine antique you want to buy it so this is how you do it each piece has a factory mark on the base tareen here factory mark country of origin england i want you to ignore all factory marks you can research them later if you buy a bargain for a pound or two they are there i want you to concentrate on the country of origin this one says england item number two the little jug says made in england item number three the punch bowl doesn't say england at all but it says london so we know it's english so here's how you date them let's go back to the terrine that just says england so you need to know and remember rewind and re-watch simple enough you need to know that the black stamp england wasn't added to pottery and porcelain until 1891. prior to 1891 there was no country of origin stamped on the bottom of pottery or porcelain this one is marked england so you know instantly that you pick it up at a yard sale that it was made post 1891 hold that thought whilst i show you item number two the little jug look at the country of origin it says made in england so they've added the maid in bit this wasn't introduced until about the end of the first world war 1918 so let's say 1920. okay so back to the touring it's marked england we know that it dates after 1891 we know that the made in bit was added circa 1920 so we know categorically when we see this terrain priced up at five pounds at a yard sale that it was made between 1891 and 1920 so you bag that bargain then you take it home and research the maker job done we know then equally that this was made post 1920 and as you get better at these things you know by the straight the design the transfer print it was made about 1930 but this is where it gets really interesting when you know something is english could be french could be german could be austrian doesn't matter same rules apply you know this is english but it doesn't carry its country of origin it's a punch bowl it's rather lovely and i bought similar things to this but antiques fares for 10 20 pounds this particular one is worth several hundred so the bargains are out there so it is just stamped with the makers mark and london so you know once you know these rules about the 1891 onwards that this punch bowl was made before 1891 it's a proper antique and if that's 20 or 30 pounds somewhere you buy it take it home research it and discover it's worth hundreds of pounds and just to prove that what i'm saying is right coincidentally whilst editing the video you're now watching i've just had an email from simon one of my youtube subscribers who has sent me this picture of an english mug carrying no country of origin mark but dating to about 1820 weldon simon simon paid 20 pence for this genuine antique from a little antiques fair and simon i'm sure you've been using these tips and you probably know that's worth 30 to 50 pounds well done you final and crucial top tip coming up but remember first of all if you're going to try and do this for profit do your buying quickly if you see something for 20 quid and you pick it up and you and you know it's an antique do your research at home don't muck about there and then just get it bought you've got the luxury of time and the internet at home to do your research but here's the final top tip if you do want to try and make money out of these things re-watch the video let the tips sink in and before you go to the yard sale antiques fair up car boot fair make some notes on a scrap bit of paper with the rules of thumb so in the heat of the moment if you start getting confused you can pull your paper and very quickly remind yourself so get yourself out there buy some bargains and let me know if these top tips make you some money i'm david harper thanks for watching till next time cheerio
