How to Hang a New Door on an Existing Jamb

hi everyone I'm Lee up CJ and drilling today we're going to be hanging a door and you might be saying to yourself Lia I'm not certain I can do that but let me tell you it's easier than you think come on in let me show you the tools you're going to need for the job so you know this is a simple job that doesn't really require a lot of tools we're going to need a hammer a very sharp chisel I'll explain this later but a couple paint serves a package of shims now shims you can get at any home improvement store they're inexpensive you'll need a screwdriver or a battery-powered screwdriver a pair of safety glasses and a pencil and last but not least a tape measure so here we are at the existing jamb still has the hardware on and we're going to have to take the new door and do what's called a dry fit that's going to help it's going to help us line up where the hinges need to be cut in the new door so I'm going to take the new door and I'm going to position it into place in the opening okay so the door is in place but if you know this look there's a huge gap at the top is a huge gap now remember I told you about the painters this comes in handy because they're consistently the same thickness from one end to the other and we're going to need that I'm going to show you where we're going to need it I have two painters that are going to act as placeholders I'm going to maintain a gap between the top of the door and the jamb now we're going to have to adjust the door and the way we do it is with the ship now what shims do are shims create a wedge and you can change the thickness of the wedge by adding or subtracting shims to it okay so now it comes time for us to start tapping the shims underneath the door to raise it now I'm going to go to the other one I'm going to go back and forth okay so now we have the door where we wanted now comes time we have to mark where to cut the hedges so you want to make a mark um at the bottom of the hinge on the new door and you want to make a mark at the top of the hinge on the new door and you want to repeat the same process on the bottom hinge now sometimes you might want to take a piece of wood to use as a guide rest that right underneath this hinge here and then just strike your line because you want to make certain at the line that you strike on the new door lines up perfectly with the hinge on the old jamb okay so I've removed the door and now it comes time to measure the hinge plate now here's the thing if you notice the barrel of the hinge it sits out from the jamb that's what this is this is a door jamb here and it fit set snugly against the door jamb well then you would get hinge bound you don't want the door to be hinge bound so if you notice it's offset well how much do we need to pull that plate out well you want to measure that and this distance from the barrel of the hinge to where the jamb begins is probably about a quarter inch so I'm going to measure it and I'm going to tell you okay so yeah it is a quarter is from the barrel of that hinge to the beginning of the jamb okay so we've got our two marks where the hinge needs to be placed and what I'm going to do I'm just going to take a speed square you can take any kind of straightedge to make your line you take a regular carpenter's square anything that you have even a ruler will just strike our lines here so we can see better okay so we have our lines and so we know that our hinge is fit between the two lines like so but now we have to set the plate and remember I said that the jam to the end of the hinge plate is a quarter-inch so we know that we need to have at least a quarter-inch sitting out from the door so now we just draw a line around now if you notice on a chisel you have a flat side and you have a beveled side that matters because when we go to carve the hinge where the hinge plate goes you want to be very mindful of what side is facing out okay so the flat side the flat side of the chisel should be facing out as you outline the area you're going to cut out so we're going to take a hammer and we're just going to tap now I'm going to come to the other side of the hinge and I'm going to repeat the process now you want to carry along the outside and again you want to hold it so the flat side is out now some hinges aren't square they have like a rounded edge and the old hinge that I took off it has a rounded edge you may want to take a utility knife and follow the line with the utility knife to cut your groove in now it's time to chisel out the wood that we have outlined here this is the section that we're going to chisel out you want to keep in mind that you want the amount of wood that you chisel out it to be the thickness of the hinge if you come in close you get an idea of just how thick the hinge is now this is about how deep I want the cut to be now I'm just going to try to clean it out if you notice now I'm using it a taper side up I'm just going to try to smooth out some of those rough spots so now it's time to put the hinge in place and if you've noticed it's nice and flush here that's exactly what we want so I'm just marking the holes now you may want to pre-drill the holes don't have a drill to pre-drill the holes just like a finish now and do a starter hole with a finish now and that should do the trick as well now all you want to do is screw the hinges into place okay so it's now it's now the moment of truth so we'll just slide the hinge in there and everything should be okey-dokey you know it's best if you start with the bottom hinge first slide that bottom hinge in I've got the pin i've lubricated it you might want to do that before you install the pennant to the hinge and so we'll put the pin in the place and line that up and just tap it down I want to just make sure that that hinge is lined up right so lined up pretty good I'll insert the pin and I got I got it get it right on the money here so the pin slides there we go that's it now I'm just going to tap it into place so we want to make certain that the hinges move freely you want to move the door back and forth okay our hinges sir are moving smoothly you're fine
