How to Handle a Biting Horse

[Music] [Music] so whenever you have a horse that's a biting horse a horse that has a tendency to to nip or be mouthy you want to make sure you set that horse up not to bite what i see a lot of people doing is they have horses who are bitey and mouthy and they're right up by them they put them in a position where they have them right by their their shoulder or their arm and then all that does is really put a target where you're almost tempting your horse to want to bite you okay especially if they already have the tendency to do so so what i like to do and this is a horse that can be a little bit mouthy what i like to do is i like to make sure that i give her a lot of clarity okay i want to be very concise very clear with my expectations with her so for example with her i wouldn't let her any closer than just being tipped after that i'm not going to let her come any further okay so she comes any further i'm just going to gently correct her and say that's my space you're not going to get to come any closer that's my space right there okay so what that means is we have to be very very vigilant of where they are in relationship to us so i'm gonna give her a rub because she respected my space there nice and kindly very nice and relaxed i like that and then i'm just gonna see if she goes to turn past where i'd like her to be and she hasn't yet so i'll give her a rub for that but here's where i could confuse her say all of a sudden i'm right here with her right and just a moment ago i was saying hey you have to stay out of my space then what's going to happen is i'm going to confuse her and she's not going to be sure of what's okay and what's not okay i'm kind of blurring the lines right so i want to make sure again that i'm giving her that clarity right giving her that correction and that i'm paying attention so what that also means is i can't be over here talking to her buddy or on my cell phone and the next thing i know she creeps up and she's on my shoulder and i'm not correcting her if you have a horse that bites one keep them at an arm's length and two make sure you are paying attention you know this horse bites so don't let it catch you off guard by the time your horse actually bites you it's way too late to correct you really should have been correcting the behaviors beforehand of them creeping into your space that way you're setting them up so that they don't think that they're entitled and that they can just reach out and bite you if i take this approach she will never bite me because i won't put her in the position too so again a little bit of a correction there again setting those expectations and giving her the clarity she needs to be the horse that i'd like her to be [Music] [Laughter]
