How to growl (Amon Amarth, Opeth, Morbid Angel style)

save your life has flesh and lies [Music] hi this is Harris from sort of misery and today I'll be showing you two simple tricks that have helped me find my voice after some 20 years of thinking I could never be a singer or a growl or anything so with that said I have to tell you that I'm not an expert and I'm not a vocal coach and I have no idea what I'm doing basically so this is a video about what worked for me and might not work for you but that does not mean that you should give up I spent countless years hours looking at YouTube tutorials to talking about diaphragm vocal folds false chords and none of it made any sense to me at all I felt that I needed something practical to kind of guide me to how I need to feel when I make a certain sound or how it should feel when I know what's right so in this video I won't be talking about any technical terms just jump into it so here are the two main steps that helped me unlock my girl and the first one being the PSI like imagine coming home from work school or whatever and you take a deep breath and not but really deep what we're really after is feeling the rattle in the throat that's when we know that we are relaxed foreign and the Second Step being the the hey I think I saw some video of Angela gosso saying imagine somebody stealing your car keys and and you're running after him and shouting hey hey hey hey hey or not but you get the idea so that's where we get the power from and those two combined uh become hey foreign so when we break it down it comes down to those two techniques you get the low end and relaxation from the side and you drive it with power from the hey hey so it's hey [Music] so that's all there is to it all right let's say that you master the two techniques and you are ready to go um the only type of growl but I really know how to do well is the opif and Morbid Angel kind of growl where every word is pronounced pretty clearly I see I hear I feel I have no idea how to do black metal screams or anything like that what I can say with the opif type of growls that you should have are pretty much open jaw and over pronounce it the word so if you would say I see I feel I hear I see I feel I hear I think that's the biggest difference between our types growl um and I like how it sounds um and I can't really tell you much more because I have no idea what I'm doing but I really hope this helps someone at least and I'm trying to give back to the community so if this helped you drop a comment below and good luck never give up
