hi it's chester at blue pecan computer training and in this video i want to show you how to create a list of all the files that are in a particular folder and that will also include any files in subfolders and we're going to use power query to achieve this if you have an older version of excel such as excel 2010 or 2013 power query is not pre-installed but what i'll do is i'll leave a link in the description of this video to the microsoft website where you can download and install the power query add-in i'm in excel 365 i've got data here get data from file from folder and then i need to browse for the folder that i want to get the files from or a list of the files from click on ok this gives you a preview of the table that it's going to import into excel and if you're happy with that information as in happy with all the columns you don't want to delete any columns or add new columns then you can just click on load if you wanted to add further columns for example like the file size and you wanted to delete say one of these date columns which is what we're going to do then you need to click on transform data or it may say edit in your version of excel or power query okay so let's add the file size column we go over to the attributes column and click on this little button here it gives you a list of all the attributes i'll untick select all click size click on ok and now i've got the file size i can even rename this column let's call it file size just to be really clear if i wanted to get rid of say date accessed i could just right click on date access remove and once i'm happy i can click close and load and it will load that information into excel now the great thing about this is if a new file ends up in our folder so let's add a powerpoint file for argument's sake i'll call it test added it to that folder and i would want that file to appear then in this list i'll go to the queries and connection pane and if that doesn't display let me just close it let's go back to data click queries and connections you've got a little refresh button here click on refresh you'll see that now i have that test powerpoint file appearing in my list so you can refresh this list at any time just by using that little button there okay that's all i wanted to cover in this particular lesson hopefully you found it useful please subscribe if you have and i'll see you next video
