hi I'm Jan with Jan Patty quilt and I do mainly needle turn applique I've had people say to me a whole lot I'd love to make one of your patterns but I can't do applique I don't know how well yes you can and I'm here to show you how today we're going to concentrate on getting the pattern from the pattern you have onto the freezer paper and then onto the fabric and these are the two quilts we're going to work with this is Lily's heart I picked it because it has a very simple heart shape that we can work with that's pretty good and then that's sunflower days and it had we're going to concentrate on it on the birds because some of them go one way and some of them go the other way the first thing we're going to focus on and I'm going to tell you is the first of the supplies you're going to need and we're going over supplies now besides your pattern of course you need your pattern make sure you're using and of course I would prefer you use mota fabric especially jan patti quilts fabric but you need a good quality cotton cloth when you do applique with a high thread count because it will hold a crease much better than the cheaper fabric you need freezer paper you can either get that in sheets we have that I'm sure you can buy at other places or the big rolls of freezer paper you can get it Walmart or your grocery store will need that we need a pencil because we're going to trace there it is I knew it was under there we're going to trace the pattern you're going to need silk pins and you're going to need marking pens and I used the sew line marking pins and a clover silk pen so now we have all the supplies we need and our point is to get the pattern of the art onto the freezer paper and onto the fabric okay so we need to trace it you can use a lightbox you can use a window but most of the time you can just see by laying your freezer paper down on top of your pattern it's plenty light enough to see okay now there's two sides to freezer paper whether it's in the sheets or on the roll one is a shiny side and you're going to iron that onto the fabric one is a matte side and that's what you're going to trace your pattern on to so and the fun thing about the sheets of paper as opposed to the roll is the sheets don't curl as much the drawback is they're a little thicker and they're quite a bit more expensive okay now we lay that down shiny side down drawn the matte side and trace the heart onto the freezer paper and this is going to be your stitching line where you turn it under so this needs to be as accurate as you can make it but once again it's not rocket science I mean you can just erase it if it if you goof which I just did I always tell my students when I teach if you have a problem don't be embarrassed if you do something wrong just ask me how to fix it because believe me I've already made all those mistakes so I know how to fix them okay now we've traced the pattern onto the freezer paper and it's exactly like it is there so we need to cut it out exactly on the line so that our freezer paper pattern looks exactly like the pattern of the heart that's in quilt there okay into the trash flap okay usually what I would do now is get up and go to the iron but we brought the iron to us so we need to iron the freezer paper once again shiny side down and if it peels back that's fine it will reaiiy on the great thing about freezer paper applique is you can use the same heart shape for every heart in there you don't have to cut out that many different hearts okay so now we've got the iron the pattern ironed onto the fabric now that we have the pattern on there we still need to know where to stitch when we stitch it to the background block so we need to lay our fabric onto the sand paper board to hold it in place keep it from stretching and then take our marking pencil and once again I like these sill line pencils because I get a nice sharp line and it's not it's not thick and it comes off real easily when you after you've sewed your heart down and just draw around it okay so now turn that back over and we'll use this you can use the table you don't have to use your sandpaper board and then you just eyeball about 1/4 of an inch out I try not to get too far in fabric front phrase you're going to have to turn it under you can always trim it if you get it too thick but you can't add it back on if you get it too thin so kind of eyeball 1/4 of an inch all the way around and clip in to your heart but that's another it's a good idea to clip while the the pattern is still on because the paper will keep you from goofing and clipping down to there or it'll make it harder I've been known to do it through the paper we won't talk about that no okay like I said if you want to know how to correct mistakes ask me because I probably about made them all alright now go see let's trim that up and make it a little straighter also whenever you have a point here you're going to have to turn that point under so try to cut that off about straight about 1/4 of an inch out okay alright so now we have our freezer paper heart you can pull this off and we're ready to applique so that's how you do a normal everyday freezer paper this is a really simple one applique pattern how you get it from the pattern page to the freezer paper and onto your block sometimes you'll see a pattern that says cut to 1/r and that means two of them go this way and one of them goes the other way so you have to cut your patterns slightly differently what we will do I folded this in too because as you can see that's about the same size you can get him on there now what we're going to do and we did it so neatly is Trace him on here once and I've just folded this paper but I'm going to tell you basically works better if you have two sheets okay now let's trace him onto the paper okay there is there is our little bird we need two of these but we can as I said we can use this twice on two different pieces of fabric going this way there's no problem but the problem is one of the guys needs to go that way so what we do is we take another piece of freezer paper and we're going to have to go to the ironing board again in a minute but take another piece of freezer paper and you want it reversed so you're going to lay the shiny sides together so that when you cut this out this guy will be reversed now we need to go to the ironing board okay so now we've got our two pieces of freezer paper we've drawn on one of them we put them together shiny sides together and we're going to need to keep them together when we cut the bird out so you put take your iron and put a pressure point do not lady just iron the whole thing together you will have one solid piece of frieze of paper believe me I know that one just put your points right there what that does is it holds it together at the points so you can now cut it apart then I think we'll just leave the ironing board here I can work on top of it and it's such a bright and cheery ironing porking effort we found it at a tag sale yeah well it's not boring and it just fits on my table right we need to get these apart so take a pencil and put it under and just kind of roll the places where you touched it and that's another reason not to touch it too hard apart and you've got to be careful with this beak we don't want a bird that doesn't have a beak there okay just roll your pencil and that'll pull it okay now we have two birds one of them goes one way and one of them goes the other way now we need to iron those onto our fabric the red one goes that way and the black one goes that way okay ironed on now to recap we've done a simple freezer paper applique with the shapes all the same direction with our heart transferring the pattern first from the pattern page onto the freezer paper and then onto the fabric whenever you see it's a cut to cut one our or whenever there's an R that means there's a reverse and we've learned how to reverse our freezer paper pattern and iron it onto the fabric so I think we've covered freezer paper applique at least a lot of it we hope you've enjoyed this tutorial from Jan Patty quilt and if you'll subscribe to our channel you can
