I bought a house in 1980 with a ten year old water heater. Never once drained it until 1996. Decided to just replace it with a new one. That one from 1996 is still cooking, ive never done anything at all to it. I'm in central florida on municipal water.

Also, don't use copper hookup lines. They seem to cause electrolysis that corrodes the tank.
