hi guys welcome back to the diy youtube channel another plumbing video for you and today i'm going to show you how to fix a leaky compression fin and if you're not a subscriber hit the subscribe button because there's going to be loads of things like this coming up in the future and there's probably something on the channel that will help you out already if you're watching this you've probably got a compression fitting that's just weeping it's got a slow little leak on there so i'll show you a few little tips and tricks that'll help you out if you're watching this you've probably got a weeping compression fit in that could be on a straight fitting or a bend like this sometimes you'll just rub your fingers around it and you can't get it to seal up so i'm going to show you a few little tips and tricks now you don't need a lot for this first thing you might need adjustable wrench or spanner like this one some plumbing grips quite possibly a hacksaw but we'll come to that and some ptfe tape the first thing you can try if you've got a joint that's not sealing up is actually just try nipping it up a little bit more okay because all you're going to be doing is compressing the olive inside this joint here and squashing it onto the copper pipe you've probably already tried that though and that's probably why you're watching this video so here's what i'd do next undo the fitting separate the joint sometimes obviously this might be a longer piece of copper and it might be a bit difficult you might have to price this out the way a little bit but you can see here how a compression fitting works as you do this nut up it squashes this olive which can be copper or brass it squashes it onto the pipe which creates a seal grab yourself some ptfe tape like this okay it's very cheap you can get it from any diy store and just run a bit of ptfe tape all the way around that olive i'd suggest probably seven turns is what i like to go for six or seven turns snap that off make sure it's all neat okay like so all neat and if you notice i did that in a clockwise motion that's just a good habit to get into because if you're doing it on threaded fittings it stops it from peeling off nip it up just like you did before nice and tight okay just like that often you'll find that that will fix the issue if that ptfe tape fixed the issue for you brilliant give us a like and a subscribe and i'll see you in the next one however if it hasn't fixed the issue for you get your spanner undo refocus the camera is absolutely useless under your fitting again you can see where they're squashed up and actually made a good seal so peel that off now this is obviously not as easy if you're working on a pipe that's actually fixed in place on a tap or something like that what you need to do is peel all that lptfe tape off there get yourself a hacksaw and what we're going to do is we're going to remove this olive and we're going to put a new olive on the pipe so often it'll be the olive that's been compressed that's actually causing the issue so i'll show you how to remove that olive now and replace it i'm going to do it on this fitting because i've got it held on my clamp here under your fitting again you'll see that oliver's nipped on the pipe this piece will probably go to a tap or something else so that'll be hanging there in your scenario but we'll get that out of the way grab yourself a hacksaw and we want to make a cut diagonally across that olive the olive will be fairly soft you don't need to go crazy support it with your thumb make a nice little cut in the top of the olive and be careful that you don't hit the copper pipe you need to keep the blade on that olive and you don't want to go all the way through because again you'll cut the copper pipe that's what you don't want to do so we need to make a little line just across this olive junior hacksaw's perfect for this because often you won't get a full-size hacksaw in there and you might see that your olive already starts to come loose right once you've got a nice little line in there grab yourself a flat screwdriver and just twist the olive you'll see that the olive is actually snapped okay that's released the olive you can slide the olive off if you can't get a hacksaw in because this is against a wall or something like that what you can do is use a dremel okay be careful if you're using any power tools not to catch the copper pipe because it can create more work for you you can use a little dremel of a mini grinder disk on there to do the same job you can see that snap the olive when you're replacing the olive putting your new one on it doesn't matter if it's a copper or brass olive just put that on there put your fitting back on don't need any ptfe tape however if you want to be doubly sure you can put a few wraps of ptfe tape on there i'll nip that back up you'll actually feel it compressing once you get used to this feel it compressing that olive okay and that will 90 percent of the time fix the problem if it still leaks the problem is is likely the pipe but normally one of these methods is going to fix your compression joint leak there is one other method and that is using a plumber's mate or an lsx i don't really like using them i have done in the past and they do sometimes get you out of a muddle if that helped you out give us a like and a subscribe because it's going to be loads of stuff that's going to help you out in the future and i'll see you guys in the next one
