hey guys welcome back to my small engine repair Channel today I'll be showing you how to quickly repair damage to spark plug threads and today I'll be doing this on the engine of this snowblower here for some reason with this specific engine I get a lot of customers call me and say I tried to replace the spark plug but when I went to put it back in I cross threaded it and now the threads are damaged and I cannot get the new spark plug back in now one main reason why this happens is because it is awkward to reach the spark plug in here now when I start spark plugs back into this engine I do it with my fingers because then I know if they're getting cross threaded as it's going in with the spark plug wrench sometimes you don't feel that so I'll quickly show you the spark plug that came out of there and here are the threads hopefully you can get a good view there it does look like they are a bit damaged obviously the spark plug will not get started up again in there and you should be able to see them quite well here now the good news guys is you don't need to remove the whole cylinder head off the engine to fix it you don't always need to put a helicoil in there to repair the threads oftentimes I can fix it just using a spark plug the thread chaser like this now this tool can do two sizes of spark plugs the 14 millimeter on this side and the one size bigger over here today I'll be using the 14 millimeter one which is this side and most of the time it's the only side you'll be using on this tool so the way I use this tool is that the head is still on the engine as I just did the end that I'm using into some grease now the reason I'm putting grease on the tool is so that it catches all the metal shavings I don't want the shavings to go down in the engine so the grease will do a good job to trap it inside of the grease so now I'm going to reach down with my hand now try to get this tool started on the threads now this tool may not work all the time depending on how badly your threads are damaged but I do have it started right now now today I'll be using a spark plug tool like this it's thin the reason I'm using this one is because a regular spark plug socket will not fit there and now it just slowly turned the tool you might get some resistance because it's cutting new threads inside the old ones if it gets too tight just back off like this and then come back around again and just keep doing this until the tool is right at the bottom of the threads and again if it gets too hard just back off now I'm going back forward with the tool and once you're right at the bottom just take the tool out and here's the tool now just fresh out of the spark plug hole and here's if you had the threads now I'm going to go and wipe off that grease and here's the new spark plug hopefully the threads are good now and that it goes in flawlessly and again on this specific engine I always started the plug with my fingers and so far it's going in pretty good and now I can go ahead with my spark plug socket and I can even turn it in by hand like this and now I'm going to gently screw the plug back in with the ratchet so far so good and that plugs in there and now what I'm going to do is start it up like this just to make sure it runs and then I'll put all the covers back on and I've got all the covers on and you would never know that there was an issue with these sparkplug threads and by the way guys this is a small tool here that is a must-have in your repair shop even if you're a hobbyist this little tool will save you a lot of money and aggravation in the future and also after you do a job like this for a customer make sure you tell them to be extra cautious if they remove the spark plug and reinstall a new one so as you saw in the video guys you can avoid a huge disaster by just using that small tool chasing the threads and then being able to rethread your spark plug in there thanks again for watching guys make sure to follow me on Facebook Twitter and Instagram and have yourselves a great day
