YouTube it's such welcome to driving 81 you find me in a 2018 Ford Expedition I'm on highway 4 heading east in Orlando Florida I've been here for nearly two weeks now and this is my hire car now I thought while I'm here I'd make a short video basically explaining how to drive in the USA let this guy in here now driving in the USA is not as difficult as you may think so long as it can get over a few things which are initially very different for example well you'll notice that the steering wheel is on the long side that is of course if you're used to driving in the UK so you'll find the steering on the left-hand side in the USA they drive on the right-hand side of the road now once you can get your head around that and get used to that everything else kind of just falls into place but there are a few things that you do need to know about and be aware or be aware of to make your life just a little bit easier and make the whole experience of driving in the USA just a little bit more pleasant and there's only really about five or six steps that I'm going to run through all very easy very simple to understand so let's get into it [Music] [Music] now obviously you may well be familiar with some of the things I'm going to tell you depending on where you're coming from I am from the UK so I'm obviously used to driving on the UK roads where u-turns are illegal now in the u.s. see u-turns are very legal and they are in fact promoted they are there was lots of signs seeing you tuned here the Sat Navs encourage you to do u-turns if you've taken a long turn so they are really handy really helpful and will help you get back on track if you've lost your way very quickly in most cases u-turns will be acceptable unless you see a sign saying no you tune ok I'm in a bit of a heavy traffic situation right now I'm going to turn right ahead but everybody else seems to be turning left ahead the left turn is for Universal Studios Islands of Adventure and the city wall that's why everybody's going that way it's five past 10:00 in the morning so all the tourists are going that way in this kind of type of traffic you will see that you will get caught up like that like nobody's business like they don't even care there's lots of traffic on the roads the roads are really well built to be able to deal with the amount of traffic that's on the roads but just appreciate that in busy times you will get caught up don't take it personally you'll find that cars will undertake you they will overtake you and within an instant they'll be in front of you it's just something that happens so as I say get in here don't be afraid to make last-minute maneuvers don't be afraid to make last-minute moves so long as you're coast is clear check your blind spots if you see a gap go for it because believe me other people will go for it as well so you will be caught up don't take it personally and other people you will cut other people up as well they won't take it personally you might get beeped out but don't worry ball out because beeping is something that is done like like in the UK we breathe Americans just beep the hole they'll beep the horn that absolutely anything [Music] okay next up on how to drive in the USA we're gonna be looking at four-way intersections now four-way intersections they can be a little bit confusing at first but once you've worked it out once you've figured it out it is quite easy basically all of the roads in America they are straight lines you won't find any roundabouts so you'll find straight lines of road or crossing each other at different sections and four-way intersections the ones which are unregulated or uncontrolled by traffic lights can be a little bit tricky so basically what happens is say for example if two three or four cars are all coming in here at the intersection at different from different directions every car needs to stop ok so once that we call a stop then the car which got there first has the right-of-way to then carry on with their journey so it's basically the first car that got their stops then they can go the second car that got there they will have stopped and their knicking go and so on and so forth so it's between the drivers to kind of work it out themselves as to who can go first generally you won't find any problem with that all drivers then didn't know the system they know how it works there all of these drivers have been driving here for a long time so just go easy don't try and jump the gun and you won't have any problems with that Kermit hey Kermit get out of here where the exits okay next up on the list is getting fuel or gas as they call an America generally when you get a higher car in the USA it's going to be gasoline or petrol engine now the way this difference in the UK is that when you go to the pumps the petrol or the gasoline is actually the black pump and the diesel is the green pump so in the UK obviously those are switched around so that can be quite confusing one other thing that you need to be aware of is that when you're getting fuel you need to go into the petrol station first of all if you're paying with cash you need to go in tell them what number that you actually parked at so say for example you're parked in number four and you want to put say $50 of fuel and they will authorize that pump to distribute $50 of fuel thank you [Applause] 6500 before please thank you so it means you can't go over your Kong where you can't go a number to be pointless so you put $50 worth of fuel in but it's important to know that it will be the petrol station will only distribute fuel wants it prepaid now a lot of the petrol stations all of the bigger ones these days they do have card machines so it's basically like pier at the pump that you have in the UK well that's fair enough if you want to use that then that's absolutely fine but if you want to use cash just be aware that you do need to actually go into the kiosk first of all pay for your fuel and then you'll be allowed to fill up remember though if it's gasoline it's the black pump and it will give you three options Kotlin bought the off the top of my head you may see them on screen now but it's like something like regular 80 85 87 95 98 or whatever different sort of octane fuel it's very easy to do once you've done it and once you know how it's done [Music] the next thing you need to be aware of is that you can unless told otherwise turn right on a red light so there are a few things that you need to look out for when you are turning right though obviously some sections will have signs of seeing no turn on red obviously that means you can't turn red on a turn right on a red light and also when you are turning right on a red light just make sure that there isn't there are no pedestrians on the sidewalks because a lawyer turning right the street that you're turning on too might have pedestrians crossing at the zebra crossings that they have and they will have right away so make sure they are finished crossing the road then you can turn right on a red light obviously if there's no pedestrians there feel free to turn right on a red light providing there is no sign up you'll see a sign where the traffic lights are seeing no turn on red that's quite a good little feature of the the road system here in America you could never do that in the UK and I do like that feature and last of it we've done turning right we're gonna do turning left now it's very common that you will see two rules of lanes for turning left make sure you stick to your lanes because it's quite easy to be maybe drift to one side when you're turning left generally on the roads you will be we will see markings for lines that you need to stick to when actually turning left sometimes there might just be worn lane for left turns other times there may be two lanes for left turns so if you're turning left on the Left lis if you're turning left with two lanes make sure you stick to your lane and follow that line all the way around and tell you on to the next straight bit of Road one final thing that I do want to mention is that when you're coming off the slip lords for motorways you may well find beggars that's people with little pots asking for money don't be put off by that if you do feel uneasy by that just make sure your doors are locked you're in a no obligation to obviously give them any money and I have actually give them money in the past and I've found that they've been very nice very polite very thankful even for receiving a dollar so if you are going to give them something just maybe widen your window down a tiny bit to stick a dollar out and give them a dollar if not then you don't even have to make eye contact with them they shouldn't bug you obviously I can't guarantee that because everyone's different but generally they are generally quite thankful and very nice but make sure your doors are locked haven't said that because you never know what somebody's gonna do and that's it those are pretty much the things that I've picked up while driving here everything else is straightforward you're just driving in straight lines the left-hand lanes are generally the fast lanes which is what I'm in now and I'm actually being undertook it as you were so if you want to stay in the slow lanes keep to the right if you want to be in the fast lanes keep to the left if you're turning left keep to the left if you turn right keep to the right that's pretty basic stuff Vista key stay there many years ago very nice place Vista key on Universal Boulevard so that's it yep I hope you've enjoyed this hope it has helped you if you are looking to be driving in the year it's gonna say the UK the USA anytime soon if you have any questions or no dog there are things that I have missed because obviously I'm not an expert and driving in the USA as I say these are just things that I've picked up as I've gone along the way so thanks for watching please like please subscribe I'll see you next time as if I'm just driving along International Drive stumble across a DeLorean ooh [Music]
