in today's video I'm going to be talking about how you draw someone's like this [Music] so why should you draw someone's likeness but not a true representation of them well to start drawing someone's likeness is much easier you can spend hours drawing a very hyper realistic version of someone's face right down to every little freckle and hair on their face but from my point of view at least that's very stressful and a lot of low work a lot of people don't have the time to do that so for me lightness is just a simpler way of doing it drawing someone's likeness is a lot of fun think about those draw this in your style tags you'll sometimes see the same drawing done like 30 different times completely different styles but you can still see it's the same character to me that's what drawing someone's likeness is it's getting a representation of the person and then go into town with how it's actually stylized so I believe the best reason to draw someone's likeness is that you can be really flattering now this may sound a little bit vain but really we just want to feel good about ourselves at the end of the day and we always imagined ourselves different and the way we actually look as an example I'm quite self-conscious about my weight so in my recent draw the artist video when I have to actually draw myself I do myself slimmer than I am I was nothing wrong with that it made me feel more confident and you can still tell that it's me so now you know why to draw someone's likeness but let's talk about how you draw someone's like this I'll be using this illustration I did of my boyfriend Rob but to be able to illustrate my points number one identify what physical characteristics you associate with the person you're trying to draw think about the person you're trying to draw like a cartoon character most cartoon characters will wear exactly the same thing every time you see them or have a few outfits that they swap between the point of this is so that you identify the character specifically by what they're wearing and so next time they're on screen you can easily recognize them it's also because it's easier to animate chatters and closed all the time but theroths went that's not war bothering with for example my boyfriend will pretty much always wear the same kind of clothes he'll wear some kind of graphic t-shirt with something nerdy on the front of it and most likely a pair of joggers or pair of jeans however the actual clothes he wears are not specific enough that you would identify him as those clothes the clothes on him are not synonymous with each other a lot of people wear graphic tees a lot of people were joggers so for Rob it would have to be something that only he wears only he wears in a certain way for me this boils down to three things his hat his glasses and he's beard now there are lot of people that have a bed wear a hat and need glasses but not everyone has that combination of things in the same style that Rob does which is why I decided they were the perfect things to use to represent him number two identify the strongest personality traits or the emotions you would associate with the person you're trying to draw I would say this one is probably more important than the previous but the first one comes first because it's like physically what they look like so why is this so important knowing their personality traits or the emotions you associate with them it's important because if you strip away the outside well they either makes it's like a serial killer or if you strip away the outside what is on the inside is truly who they actually are so it's important to be able to capture that in your drawing so my robe is very complex person but I was able to boil down what I would say his essence is in two three very easy words he's warm he's sweet and he's funny now how do I translate those into the actual drawing because all of them are really feelings not something you visually see this is one of the challenge artists face but it is doable it just involves a little mental gymnastics the mental gymnastics comes into it because you have to realize what you actually had then to phi2 mean certain things for example I wanted to make Rob seem warm I'm like approachable so okay how would I do that and it sounds obvious now but I used warmer tones for example I tried to stay away from really cold colors especially in his face because that would make him seem like a cold person it's funny the way we identify words with colors because well it's really all based on feelings so using warm colors really brings like his warmth or cross on-screen so to me being sweet is like it's cute and adorable and just like it's a feeling it's really hard to actually put into words but it's it's just mmm let's see who can make it it's like a sound being sweet to me but how on earth do I put that into a drawing well I decided to make all the edges quite round so even his glasses which are kind of angular I made them slightly more rounded this just gives the whole drawing quite a like cutesy look so there's no real harsh lines anywhere and it just makes him seem so yeah so as I'm laughing I may as we'll talk about being funny Robbie's very funny person he is always making me laugh at to the point of like crying and wheezing laughter so the easiest way to describe that on like a drawing is smiling I made him smile it sounds simple but it's true but I would even want to do this like big cheesy grin it's more of a like a subtle smile of subtle laugh but to like really make it to really drive the point home I did the little like cheek like creases just little tiny ones and then the little tiny creases around his eyes and I also didn't do like actual eyes I helped them in that almost like anime asked just two little lines and he just makes him seem so happy and cute and I'm really happy with specifically how these three warm sweet and funny come across in there and number three keep it simple so I often find that if I had way too much detail to a drawing of like someone I'm actually trying to draw it comes off like it's not them have you ever seen those tattoos that people get of like the kids or whatever and they're always like really hyper realistic and they just look there's almost like an uncanny valley type thing to it so that's why I always prefer to do very simple shapes very simple colors because that way you still get the point across without it seeming weird in the context of drawing rob4 simple shapes I literally went to okay the beard is a shape what you see of his face is a shape and this hat is a shape and I tried to keep it as simple like okay technically his beard isn't that one exact shape he's got maybe a little tiny patch there and a little thing here and his hat has like little lines on it but there's no point doing any of them because it's too over the top if keeping it simpler actually enhances the drawing of the person number four every single choice you make has to relate to that person's likeness this is the final point for drawing someone's likeness but it's probably the most important one so time you put pen to paper or stylus to tablet you're making a conscious choice to do it that way down to the shape of the lines how many lines fur trump's beard should I do how big should his other cheek blushes be how much shading should there be will it make him look too dark will it make him look too light every single little choice has got to feed into you trying to represent a represent a represent that person you're trying to draw not only with likeness drawings but if you just take any drawing you're trying to do every choice you make should be intentional it is one of the things I learned from university thank you for the debt but it was a great lesson every choice you make make it count god I'll be getting a t-shirt so that to me is the four things you need to do to be able to draw someone's likeness so you identify the physical characteristics you can identify their strong personality traits you keep it simple and you make every choice count thank you so much for watching this video it really helps to support me if you want to support me further you can like the video and subscribe if you want to support me financially I actually opened a patreon now anyone that does want to support me on patreon please make sure you only do it if you have the money spare I don't want anyone giving me their money who really needs it on that No I love you and leave you I hope you have a wonderful day
