all right hey guys i'm back and we're gonna do uh three poses um really basic lay-ins uh for this exercise uh i like to do 20-minute lay-ins as a regular practice so let's go ahead and get started with the first one she's got a nice head tilt she looks relaxed like she's daydreaming very round features at least for the head part her nose looks pretty sharp um let's go ahead and get start started with the basic circle something like that hopefully it shows up on camera right away i'll try to make a little bit darker for you i've been struggling with this camera and hopefully i'll be able to get something better in the future but for now this is what i'm working with so hopefully it's okay so we got the circle now i'm gonna look for the brow angle and i use my pencil to find finely tune that angle make sure i got it right i need to make it much more steep i have a little too shallow so i'm trying to make what's called the cross of the face so first find the angle the brow or the eyes really let's try that again so i find the angle of my hand and bring it down to the paper and that's about right so now i'm going to find a cross of the face the center line and check that angle and that's about right so for the hairline i'm going to guess guesstimate about right there actually i'm going to move it down a little bit more so i have the tendency to make the foreheads a little bit too big and then i'm going to guess where the bottom of the nose is and bottom of the chin and i'm thinking that i need to leave more space because it's a foreshortened um because we're looking up under her i can see under her nose so that means that first third will be a little bit longer so now i'm just going to check my work so first i'm going to measure bottom of the nose to the brow and check that with the top third and it looks like yeah that's about right because this distance comes up to about right where the hair the top of the head is actually the hairline's here in the top of the head so that length comes about right there so that goes along with the four shortened where the the top is short the shortest a little bit longer than the longest but i'm going to check the bottom 30 compare it to the middle and it comes right about here so looks like i need to move it up just a tad something like that now i got the thirds of the face all measured out and the length so now i'm going to find the width so compare i'm going to measure from the outside of the ear all the way over to the cheek compare that to the length and about right there let's see if my pencil is long enough um so let me see how far i want to cut this side off and my distance was almost the length of the pencil so we're talking about something right here so this distance is about right there i'm gonna take this out and then from the brow let's go ahead and work on the blocky shape of the nose the glabella and then the root of the nose about right there angle of the bridge of the nose and we can see under the nose so the tip will be about right here on the outside of the nostril something like that tip right here a little v-shape for the tip of the nose and you can see the far side wing of the nostril foreign okay i'm looking at this distance seeing if i have it too far out let's put that little wedge shape for the plane change because you have the brow here and then the eye socket somewhere in here you have another plane change for the side of the head and this front plane of the skull and then the jawline comes up i feel like it should come in a little bit further into the face something like that [Music] thinking about that cylinder of the mouth area and her chin rhythm and her neck comes off about right here shoulder right here let's go ahead and place the ears so if we make a horizontal and it looks like it comes about right here as well so you can place that ear right there and the hair comes just outside of the back of the ear then we can find the neck and the shoulders right so sweep to the other side then we have the shirt sweeping around let's go ahead and put in the bun very very basic right now and if you look to where that hairline is i need to bring it down a tad it follows the outside shape of her head crease right there let's see it flattens out and stretches back here let's see let's go into the eyes work on the eye sockets she doesn't have much of an arching brow but i'm just going to add a little bit to it we need to bring the brow further forward come over here do the eyeballs eyeball socket area okay let's go back to the nose i didn't like how that looked i think i made it to that nostril too too big on that side and it needs to be more of a sweep i think they call it angelic it's like a almost like a ski like a ski slope and the root was right here so let's work on the mouth actually we're working on the eyes aren't we i'm jumping over every everywhere so let's fix this hair come down and around then we come back down to the eyes trying to find that that corner of the eyes so come across with the root at the angle of the head come up almost parallel maybe not quite so about right there come to the other side about right there and then let's go ahead and map in the eye shape and then the top fold of the eye let's come to the other side here actually let's bring this shape down more i have a two sitting too high up yeah that's better made the irs too big bring it in a little bit there we go then we're going to cut in on the side then the cheek comes out of that corner and it's very round and then we can pull that line all the way through and create like an overlapping line with the one that's next to the mouth so pull that through and behind it the muzzle will fill in next to the mouth should do some eyelashes let's go down to the mouth and try to place it and the the issue i can run into and have to be careful of is the center of the mouth being too far this way too far over that's that's probably the the mistake i'll make so i have to look out for that so we have the philtrum here the other side of that is right here so that the v-shape of the middle the lip will be right there pull a straight line down bottom lip somewhere right there so i'm trying to make sure i don't have it too far over let's just look at the corners of the mouth and trying to see if it sits outside or inside where the line of the nostril would be if i pulled a straight line down nice looks like it sits on the inside come over here this side of the lip will be short because of that foreshortening this side will be much longer and sits pretty far out from the nostril actually let me shorten that nostril up i feel like that should be about where the corners of the mouth lie and i'm gonna make sure i'm on that same plane the same angle perfect come down here the corners sit lower and then let's come with a sweep right here for the middle so what we're going to do is stair step up for the bottom lip and come across and stair step back down then we're going to create the bottom lip which is going to be fuller than the upper lip like so and now you can see we need to adjust the chin a little bit it's a little bit too too long i think there's a nice core shadow it's on the bony part of the chin so it becomes really a really strong shadow then over here it softens up a little bit so let's fix this put a rhythm for the bottom lip it's a little bit of a cast shadow over here it's very soft lighting shadow underneath and onto the neck very very soft actually so she looks much older than our lay-in which is normal happens because of all the lines all the structural lines it ages the person quite a bit but once you take them out and you start doing the shading it'd be much closer to their age and bring our eyebrow up quite a bit here and this one too so lance can be really challenging because you're just trying to discover the basic structure of their face and you can't hide things in shadows and stuff like that so they're actually pretty hard that's why they make good practice let's see let's put in the people maybe like a place for the highlight to help us find those plane changes when we do put in tone put these rhythms in here we have this one here which i think we took out yeah we haven't done the ear it's very simple tragus antitragus inferior crus triangular fossa superior crust anti-helix right here i got the was it concha simba concha cavum and come down that's pretty much it so you might want to do the side plane of the nose too if you want all right that's pretty much it for this one let's go on to the next the next one he is not tilt too much i mean well yeah it's a good tilt not compared to the last one but um straight on almost slight head tilt not three-quarter pose exactly but let's go ahead and start off with the circle and then for him actually let's do something a little different not just a circle but let's do like a block shape because he's pretty blocky he's got very masculine lines i feel like i can almost kind of ghost him in pretty good let's see you see a lot of his hair the top here and it comes down like that a lot of times i'll i'll use like a circle and then build from there and a lot of times i'll just do like a big head shape like this and so let's get his head tilt following the eyes and it's really slight something like that and then center line across all the face maybe a little bit further over it's not exactly directly in the middle it's over to the side because i can see more of this ear than this side just do the hairline so this one we're actually looking and i'm looking up at him we're looking down you can tell by how much of the nose we could his nose we can see underneath which is not at all let's see so i'm just going to ghost in what i think the placement will be and then i'll measure and correct what i need to he's got some really nice eyebrow shapes let's see bottom of the nose probably well let's see with the glabella got the root of the nose it's probably right here bottom of the chin so let's now let's measure those three parts the bottom of the chin to the bottom of the nose bottom of the nose of the brow brow to the hairline so i'm going to start with the the nose length and compare that to the forehead and they're equal so i need to bring that up a bit and bottom bottom third bottom of the chin to the nose slightly longer than the nose not by much about where we have it somewhere right here let's take that out and i'm looking at these cheeks over here cheekbones very prominent on him you can actually just bring them side to side and then he has a very prominent muzzle rhythm right here with his chin like so let's take this jawline out so we just have this structure here and then we can pull our jawline comes in very cool face he has a really strong structure of the jaw his lips will probably be somewhere over here let's do a block shape of the nose let's get a better sense of the arch of his brow you see the side plane really prominent right here right here i feel like this should be a little bit more shallow a little higher maybe like like that let's see actually i had his chin pretty flat but yes almost a point let's see bring this over here so i need to bring that let me redo this so i'm looking at the um that jaw where it turns that corner let's go with the head tilt make sure we're on the same head tilt there we go that's better i feel like there we go we can adjust it later so his neck about right here curves here it makes that notch let's measure how long that is so i think i have it far too long from his sternum to the bottom of his jaw yeah that's way too far foreign and his neck comes out the trapezius something like that come over here the far shoulder and then his shirt comes out from the neck makes a nice curve up and around almost like a s curve and his ears are going to sit really high on the face since he's looking down let's see but before i place the ears let me go ahead and map in the eye socket area so i might have the face too wide actually let's just go ahead and measure the width of the face before i get going too far i almost forgot that important step so cheek to cheek on this guy measuring compare that to the bottom of the nose the reason why i've compared it to the bottom of the nose because i'm not sure about that length of the the chin think actually is probably about right here okay well good got lucky and then you see that structure a little bit of the core shadow come to the other side comes up you really see that he has such a strong bone structure looks really cool really heavy brow almost like a superhero so let's place the ears and if i take a horizontal line at an angle connecting the two ears at the top they sit pretty high up on this line and then on the bottom usually it will come to like you know the bottom of the nose but it's way far up on the face because he's looking down so the ears come up and if he's looking up the ears go down ears do kind of like the opposite of what the head is doing let's bring the ear down a little bit further and like i said you can see less of this ear it's more of a added more of a shallow perspective on this ear you can actually see inside of it and this guy's even got cool shaped ears unreal that's so let's rad this out a little bit uh come back to this side all right so almost looks like a yeah it looks like a superhero or something and this cheek comes out to right here float it to the other side and connect it i don't like this part i feel like it comes deeper in and then comes out i don't want to overdo it but i don't want to under do it either let me get that jaw angle let's try this let's go ahead and ghost in maybe it'll help me if i work on this nose a little bit get that placed better it's like the nose for him just like the most uninteresting part everything else looks so cool the nose is just sort of like a your everyday nose let's see bony structure the nasal bone the root right here and we have the cartilage of the ball now let's go back down look at his philtrum basic shape look at his lips are even cool god damn good jeans i suppose very what do you call it the um cupid's bow shape very extreme very cool shape he has a wide mouth as well it's going to be wider on this side because of that perspective maybe i have it too wide let's just leave it there and then bottom lip very small it's tucked kind of nestled under the upper lip then now we can work on placement better of this jaw the chin so he has this ridge it shows up so well you know that rhythm that we'll usually put in right here so prominent on him and it pulls all the way into the cheekbone shadow so we can bring that to the other side as well it's really cool all right let's see i think i pooped that up a little bit let's clean it up i'm getting a ahead of myself here getting hyper focused on that ridge and that pain change i think i'm trying to make it more prominent more bit larger than it actually is so that's just keep it subtle now let's do the chin rhythm much better okay now we could better place the chin his cheek bone comes down there's jawline such a subtle um shape over here so i just gotta really really want to get it right but it's so subtle maybe i got a job i'm gonna do this like 100 times then this comes up yikes all right let me think [Music] stretch stretch okay take a deep breath and and draw where should i put that corner [Music] looks like right about where the bottom of the nose is is that right he might have some asymmetry to his face i can't tell but oh i see what i did i'm blaming him and it's me that's funny uh i forgot i put a um horizontal instead of a at the angle of the face that's funny just come in and come out again comes in comes out again this is probably the most challenging jawline i've ever done his neck needs to come in a little bit i pulled this image off of pinterest i have to go back and see if i can find it find out who this model is let's see if there's more more pictures of him at different angles and stuff because it'd be really fun to draw him yeah okay that was a challenge my god okay so ah stretch where am i let's see let's clean up the nose so just bring this down let's get some of the shadows under the neck also helped me cover up some of the lines that i left behind cool oh the ear what happened to my ear let's catch that again his ear is like sticking pretty far out i think because that jaw needs to come in there you go it's funny how just like a little bit just moving a line over like a millimeter can really change the portrait all right he's got the biggest eyes okay i wonder if he i wonder if the picture went through a filter or some sort of photoshop to make his eyes bigger some people do have big eyes like that so they do look pretty cool i'm just gonna map in this hair shape this wave of hair and this guy's got like cool hair he's got a cool bone structure everything bottom looks cool so it's kind of like the hair here is pretty sparse right and then when it comes down here it gets really that line gets really sharp as it goes around that bone yeah like that i don't know there's some sort of sweep going on up here i'm not really sure i'll just leave it let's go into the eyes so his eyes are about right where the root of the nose is and let's find the corners of the eyes relationship to the nose actually let me make the nose a little bit rounder a little bit bigger and put that side cartilage on the side plane of the nose okay back to the eye about right there really big eyes just looking at it looks like he's probably starts about right here not exactly on the plate or on the plumb line of the nostril but close see his brow sits low compared to the eye let's just draw a straight line there just for reference okay it's even got eyelashes let's do the iris and it's tucked into the corner and you can see the upper eyelid because he's looking down you see that ridge gives you that three dimensional instead of just like flat and the bottom eyelid comes down like so let's take out some of these lines as references he has a highlight that cuts into the iris so let's go ahead and put that like a pizza slice so now his eye looks like a pacman got like a shadow he's got some thick eyebrow eyelashes let's do the other side let's take a deep breath this one's pretty intense see it comes over let's go to the connecting shapes right connecting one side to the other make sure we're on the same level and then his eye upper eyelid comes out from beneath that shadow of the brow and then again you're going to see the top ridge of the bottom eyelash eyelid like that and then the structure of the bottom eyelid and this iris is tucked in pretty deep to match the other one and also get the pizza slice highlight people now let's put some variation in some of that eyelash or eyebrow next um come down here come down here not crazy about my nose i think the nostrils are too low yeah that's better yeah get rid of this so i'm just putting a little bit of a core shadow on the nose trying to build up the form a little bit even though i can't see it very well in the picture but i just want to make it look cool so let's do that filtering again kind of got lost corners of the mouth i'm not supposed to do tone because it's a lay in but i'm just going to put a little bit for the bottom lip and i'm just going to pull out a little highlight all right just for fun it's very cool picture see that the cheek furrow would come over here and match up with the this whole shadow shape of the cheeks and such let's work on this core shadow of the cheek this needs to come in let's do this here so i think he's done nice little lay-in that was really fun move on to the last one so on this last guy a very cool shape of the hair um very angular i might even do something similar like i did on the last guy was just do the head shape first but i think i'll just go ahead and do a circle and then i'll work that overall head shape i think and he doesn't have a shirt on but i'm gonna probably make one up for him just so that there's like consistency in the three the three drawings and let's see so let's look for the cross of the face so we can get the head tilt and it's about right there and let's see you can see on him the side plane of the head very prominent and then let's go ahead and put that shape of the brow and the eye socket over here basic shape of the nose so we're going to guess that his nose is about right here bottom of the chin maybe right here and hair the part that's not being hairline the part that's not being covered up somewhere right there let's take measurements for the the nose compared to the forehead and they're about equal so let's make our adjustment here let's bring the nose up a bit um a little bit further let's see let me put his nose lint and the shape of his nose in a little bit more let's take a measurement again it's actually forehead's a little shorter okay that's good that goes along with the uh the proportion because we're looking up at him because i can see under his nose pretty good so those three parts are gonna be each one's going to be a little bit longer longer than this this one's a little bit longer than this one basic nose structure got the root of the nose the glabella the side plane of the nose okay let's see it's kind of hard to look at him because he's such a extreme angle makes me want to tilt my head which is probably not a good idea because then i'll lose a lot of those proportion angles and stuff i'll probably flatten them out a little too much so let's come down here and he's got a full bottom his lips he has really big lips so let's make this area pretty full and then the bottom chin somewhere right there now let's find the width of his head compared to the length by measuring behind where the very back of the ear is to the tip of the nose then i'm going to compare that to the length and it's about there that was a weird accent there let's see so his ear is somewhere over here somewhere let's see if we can find it it's got a cool angle on the face it's almost vertical but not quite i feel like i'm going to take another measurement i'm going to take from the nostril to where the ear starts and compare that to the bottom of the nose and see where it falls on the forehead falls right about there take this measurement come over here so i got to bring this line over and i think this measurement was way off and then to find the top of the ear i'm taking a horizontal line it comes right to the eyebrow so now i know where the ear sits this should come back here it's a little too far forward and he has a prominent jawline as well it's like these these model jaw lines are really cool very angular um let's bring this it kind of falls back i'm probably going to exaggerate it a little bit is this ear attached okay is it's attached then it comes down i still feel like this is too narrow i don't like it let me put in some other structure lines yeah that should be the angle hmm all right let me take more measurements sounds like the there's a party started next door i hope i'm invited if i'm hungry let's see let's go down here let's measure again tip of the nose to the outside of the ear compare that to the bottom of the chin and the length about right here almost the length of the pencil so i guess the we're in the ballpark i'm gonna make a little bit wider all right so let's look for the chin or that's in the neck comes out right there then we have the hair comes up here oh that's why they were vacuuming over there they're getting ready for their party i think everybody just showed up that makes sense let's see big hair shape it's got lots of curls we get to sketch in any way we want and see all right now let's work on the bottom of the mouth here that'll help this place well actually let's go all the way down and finish off the neck here his shoulders are really high up on this side and you can see his clavicle curve straight line to find the pit right there so if we put our t-shirt on this guy just do something like this now let's go to the mouth this philtrum angle is pretty extreme comes to here it's got really curvy upper lip i need more space though i hope you can hear that that's so funny let's see so nice full upper lip and the corner is probably like right there and remember the angle that we have for the head tilt we'll come here and try to keep true to that angle all the way through and it looks like the corner of the mouth is probably about right there and then stair step up for the bottom lip from straight across stair steps down and then falls curves over and around bottom lip you're not going to see as much it's not as full as the upper lip and then you can sort of i can see a cheek on this side right here and then the philtrum it's kind of hard to see what's going on but i can see a little bit of the far side cheek right there and then this chin comes out and gives us this angle all right so let's see getting distracted a little bit by the neighbors there you go it's funny they come they came down the lady came down to complain one day because it was like right when the lockdown happened or like a week after and uh i was working out inside my apartment and i had uh you know it's like just like the last five ten minutes of the workout i had ac dc blasting and she came down pretty quick telling me to turn it down because she's studying blah blah blah so i was like oh okay then i asked her if she has a pool table and she looked at me phony i was like do you guys drop balls all the time because i swear to god like all day long all night three four o'clock in the morning sounds like they're dropping like cue balls on the floor upstairs so she was like all put off that i asked her that question was pretty funny oh i see what's going on here it's really subtle lines so we have the filter in here catches that lip and then right behind the lip is a piece of the cheek and then the other cheek the upper cheek here let's see let me go ahead and put in some the under plane of the nose a little bit see these are the life of the artist right here right parties next door and you're at home studying and drawing all quiet let's see very subtle shadows don't see much so i'm just gonna ghost ghost those in [Music] i don't think i need that much information for the neck where are we i forgot all right let's go back um let's go ahead and work into the eyes actually let's do the hair basic hair shape we're just i'm just making most of this up that's definitely fine it's really cool cut and then he's got really choppy cut on the back i really like the shape right here the brow on the far side it's really cool he's got a eye deep into that socket you can't really see much what's going on don't need to but it just looks really cool let me make his neck wider it's too thin all right i'm avoiding this eye for some reason so i'm looking at this angle and for him it looks like it's parallel to the bridge of the nose at this angle so bring that line up and his eyes probably on this plane because his the root of his nose is pretty high i think it looks compared to his where his eye starts the corner of his eye so i feel like the corner of his eye is right there and this angle you can see deep into the upper eye well he has heavy eyelids anyway but you can see inside of them pretty well so it's going to be interesting trying to draw it this is got a really thick upper eyelid there's eyebrow pretty sparse eyebrows not as sparse as mine actually i gotta bring the eyebrow down let me make sure i get his eye in the right spot check this distance here okay it's good and then we've got the shadow of his upper eyelid we got to bring it down just a touch there we go might even bring this in see okay let's go back to this eye is it too far out i feel like i should bring it in maybe not i'm looking at the angle when in doubt bring it in just a tad right now his bottom eyelid is at a curve it's like curving on that perspective and then his iris is kind of shallow this side you can't really see let's bring this over i don't need to put tone in just started to usually when i go into tone it's because i feel impatient i want to get the drawing over with or not over with but just i want to i want to get to the fun fun part of it when it starts to look like the person or just starts to look cool i'm trying to get to the payoff instead of being patient so i just need to be patient it's just the lay in it's a study the purpose of it is of it is to make me patient because i know i'm not going to finish it i'm just doing lay hands that's why it's such a good study practice it's a good practice as you do like a 20-minute lay-in you move on to the next do another one move on to the next so let me um get this rhythm back let's clean them up let's make them look respectable actually let me fix that the nostril shape i don't have it the way he is shaped this little i wasn't really looking at it i just drew a generic one yeah that's better and then his cheekbone rhythm is right here as well and he has a plane change right about here i actually didn't like that let's fix it it comes from this side all right so let's go we're almost done with our laying on this dude fix his lips a little bit don't forget that rhythm right so i feel like i feel like i can fix this jaw a little bit i'm getting picky but that's okay all right let's go back finish this ear and a couple of more adjustments and i think that's it for this practice for this warm-up this exercise so give it a give it a try you guys and let me know how it goes you can even uh send me a like a picture of it if you want like some critique on it or something you best get to me on instagram dms you can find me at bradolani on instagram you can see let me fix that jaw let me fix everything all at once there we go got the nose lips eyes let's go back to his eyes let's put like a little pupil and highlight shape let's make this upper eyelid a little thicker and get some of the eyebrow in there i think that's pretty much it guys so try these i mean they're really they're so helpful like you just do one one a day over a course of a week holy cow that's like seven of these guys they'll start to see after a couple weeks of doing them a huge huge increase in your skill level no doubt all right thanks for watching everybody and any ideas on what you want me to do for another video let me know um i'm trying to think of other ideas like uh shorter videos uh maybe like 10 15 minute ones instead of like these long three hour ones or two hour ones um let me know if you want to do that like a shorter video and i don't know what to do you know maybe i know some people do like um they'll do like uh like a speed drawing and then voice over it i can do that if you like and maybe also keep keep doing the long format drawings sometimes i ask and pretty much the response i get is keep doing the long format but yeah let me know and uh i love your guys ideas i really appreciate it thanks for watching everybody thank you see you next time bye
