hey guys Cupid Colorado custom covers and deaths we did a video a couple weeks ago on how to just like copy stair stringers trace them and cut them so today we're going to show you from scratch how to do stair stringers this is a nice little easy run it's only five steps so simple what kind of geometry trigonometry we set up our laser to figure out our rise and so your rise is gonna be wherever the stairs are landing up to the top of the deck so all I did was set up my laser took a measurement figure out what that measurement wanted and then subtract the measurement of the height of the laser over the deck so for this instance I have forty and three-eighths this laser scribe in a quarter off the deck so you can see my method on there that means I have an overall rise of 35 in 1/8 so we like to be a consistent run of 10 inches on our stringer and that kind of helps us do the math so per code a sterilizer cam Pierce terrorize can't be bigger than like 7 and 3/4 inch it's really about 8 inch but we try to stay under 7 and 3/4 inch and we know that we've got 35 and 8 so kind of simple map but what I like to do is I just look at that and I figured out kind of within code what that's gonna be and for this map that kind of works out to be 5 rises at about 7 inches so because there's 5 rises that means you're gonna have 4 steps because this last step up doesn't have an actual step built into the stringers but that's still gonna be a rise and we're gonna hang our first stringer those 7 inches below there so then I figure out okay I'm gonna have four steps I'm coming up 40 inches and then I level down from there to figure out where my stairs are gonna be landing and that's pretty much where I took my measurement from over my rise so now I have my rise of 35 and 1/8 I know I'm going to have five Rises so that makes each step about 7 inches a little bit over 7 inches and then my run is going to be 40 inches I know that because I have 4 steps and we always do 10 inches per step one reason we do that a because of code B because it works out nicely with deck boards or five and a half inches so when you have to deck boards on there with the gapping in between you have about eleven and a quarter and if you have a 10-inch stringer that gives you an inch and a quarter overhang which is a nice overhang to put a riser on and still have some space so that what I do is I come over we like to cut our stairs out of two by twelve reasonably do that because that gives you a nice medium stringer in the end if you go two by ten and you have a bigger rise like a seven to eight inch rise you'll end up with just a little bit of little bit of wood left on your stringer so two by twelve is the way to go I'm going to use this which is a framing square and we have these little stair nuts on here and so these nuts will help you kind of get your measurement so what I need to do is this is going to be my rise over on this side of the square and this is going to be my rung and I move these nuts to where I need them so I have a seven inch rise I'm gonna move that nut so that my seven inch is right on the end there and then a 10 inch ruined and so this whole thing pivots until I have my number set up where I want them screw those nuts down and then I'll go ahead and trace that and as i trace it I move it down to where that line for the run is now intersecting the end of the board and I will trace it again or however many Rises I need so for this instance I ended up with four Rises five total stops or four rises on the stringers that's my template that I cut out I went and brought it over there and tested it to make sure it's level so something with decking specifically that we do with these stairs is your Bop your stairs all have to be the consistent rise so this first step if I were to cut it the same as the rest of these and then put an inch deck board on it this first step would actually be an inch bigger than the rest of them the reason for that is because I'm measuring off the decking and there's already a deck board up there so when you think about it when I'm holding this I'm actually gonna have an eight-inch step but once I put decking on top of this then it's gonna be my seven inches so that first rise since I'm just sitting on concrete and I'm not sitting on another deck I have to cut an inch off of this so that those rises are consistent and that's all incorporated in that map that we did so everything should still be really level but once you cut your first one you're going to want to take it over set it up the height that you want on your rim and check to make sure everything is level and your rise and run are working so then once I make sure that's good I take my template I trace it onto my 12 it's important to make sure that the points of the stairs are on the edge of the two bites well I really hope you get a good stringer it's not always going to be lined up in the back because there's a little bit of variation and dimensional lumber so sometimes you're gonna have like an eighth inch bigger on the backside that doesn't matter what matters is that your front is all consistent so then I'll go and trace this based on how many stringers I need for my layout for this specific one I need seven so I'll go ahead and cut out seven hang them all up the stairs dropping and that's how you build stairs
