if you're at all familiar with critical role in the character Fern Callaway you may have heard some of her iconic quotes such as time is a weird soup and May the hair in your ears never fall out if you're not familiar with her just know this Fern is a great Fay character and I'm going to talk some about why throughout this video but I'm primarily going to talk about how you can create a fantastic Fay character yourself whether you're making an NPC or an Adventurer on this channel I'm trying to World build the fa wild to make it a playable realm so if you are interested in that then subscribe and for today's video I am more specifically going to talk briefly about some races and classes that lend themselves to a fake character the races are literally Fay races but I'm primarily going to focus on background and flavor because I think that's where a character really shines through as truly Fay first I'm going to touch on some some Fay races that are a great starting point they are foundationally Fay characters but that also doesn't mean you have to limit yourself to only F characters I don't know if that made sense what I mean is you can play any race and if at some point they were transported to the Fate wild and stayed there long enough or something weird happened to them they can become Fay I mean you can fify whatever you want these races are specifically Fay but I'm only going to give you the briefest of summaries of each of them or this video will be several hours long first we have SATs like Fern which I did not even know were actually playable and created by Wizards at the coast until I was writing this video but I'm very excited about it like Fern or Mr tumus they have goat legs and horns and a human upper body torso and they are also known for loving to party true revelers Aladin are Just Elves made to be Fay they are Fay elves they have four variations one for each of the main Fay wild courts spring summer fall in Winter they love nature art Beauty like other elves they're known for being a bit hotti there's not a huge difference I think alijan are just supposed to be a little more Whimsical hering gon are anthropomorphic rabbit folk and their name is supposed to sound like here and gone they're quick they love to travel and they have keen senses and pretty decent luck fairies are fairies they're small siiz creatures they have wings in the source books I was looking at I didn't see anything particular about personality traits so go crazy other races could include Pixies Sprites goblins bug Bears it doesn't really matter in my opinion even if it doesn't have an official stat block if you want to play it then play it as long as your DM's okay with it of course I mean build it appropriately but what I mean is even if you have a race or type of character that's generally perceived as lower intelligence or a monster or inherently evil or whatever it is you can completely change that core nature to create a new Adventurer just because it's the Fay wild and weird stuff happens there classes if you are not building an adventurer and you just want to create a fay MPC so you don't really need this section then skip to the time stamp below if you'd like but some classes especially the magical ones just scream Fay wild to me in some that don't like Barbarian even have sub classes that are supposed to be phas centered but if you're looking for a few options that just make easy sense first and foremost we have Druids they are magical and they get that magic from nature and what is the Fay wild if not a magical Place full of nature warlocks 2 too just give them an arch Fay Patron done BS they're Whimsical they're musical they're magical just like the Fay wild and if you are building a fay Adventurer I think you should really consider multiclassing Fern herself is both a druid and a rogue and it works so perfectly for her personality and the Fay wild is again the type of strange place where stuff like that just kind of happens who knows what kind of a story an adventurer has encountered in their past a Bard and a warlock could work really well too a Bard could be traveling in the Fay wild with a band that worships herome the arch Fay of rry who likes to destroy Civilization by collapsing it from within through the use of music while traveling in the faay wild with this merry band The Bard has an encounter with herome himself who wants to create a warlock Pat so those are just a few ideas for racism in classes and you don't even have to do anything along either of those lines I mean you can take any race in any class and if that character has experiences in the Fay wild extensive enough you can make them a fay character so let's talk background there is a lot of material out there on creating character backgrounds even just through the player's handbook so I'm not going to go over like every possible option I'm just going to give you some food for thought for making a fay background specifically so first I'm going to give you three Baseline questions to start with I don't think they are absolutely necessary to answer but they could give you a good foundation so first where does your character come from obviously the Fay wild but I mean do they come from one of the four main courts or do they come from a more Minor Court or do they come from a wild space where no Arch Fay has claimed that land as their own or are they from the material plane or some other plane of existence and at some point got transported to the Fay wild second question is is your character cely or uncy or neither for context cely and uncy doesn't necessarily mean good or bad members of the cely Court align themselves with queen tetania of the summer Court while uncy Fay aligned themselves with the queen of air and darkness one alignment or the other can imply a moral standing but it doesn't by any means have to it's more of a to make it really simple a love of the light or the dark and Beyond cely and uncy do they or have they ever aligned with a certain Arch Fay I won't get into all them now but there's different Arch Fay with different main ideals Beauty power Darkness hunting natural preservation if there is a Greek god for it there is or could easily be an arch Fay for it these questions can give your character a location or philosophy as a starting point and in some way a place or being that they have aligned themselves with or been around can inform their experience and from there you can start to build the character's history conflicts interpersonal relationships life goals especially if they're an adventurer for example if you have a character who was transported to the Fay wild as a child maybe they were replaced with a chang link and they've grown up with that knowledge or without and had to figure it out that could be part of their Journey but they dream of the material plain parents that they never got to truly know and they long to return to them find out who they are and save them from this terrible child that's taken their place if you want to be a little more shakerian about it maybe they were taken from the material plane as a baby and adopted by an arch Fay or some powerful Denison in the Fay wild given a life of luxury perhaps your character has served in a certain Arch phase Court and some social or magical mishap or blunder happened and they are now in Exile if the blunder was bad enough maybe they're on the run for their life or if they think it can be redeemed or they were wronged maybe they're trying to redeem themselves right now our group is playing wild Beyond The Witch light and in there there are two F backgrounds that I really like and one is fa lost and the fa loss background has a chart where if your character has spent long enough in the Fay wild they taken on a permanent Mark of it in some way for example flowers will either bloom or Wilt your choice in your presence or your skin sparkles in Moonlight there's also witchlight hand if you want your character to have been part of a magical Fay carnival at some point with race in class in place and with at least a general background some sort of starting point flavor is what really makes a character strong so here's another list this time of factors to consider that being a f creature or having spent time in the Fay wild these would inform a character's experience personality understanding of the world philosophy Etc first is time Fern doesn't just say time is a weird soup to be strange and clever she knows that time is a weird soup time in the Fay wild is unreliable able it can become warped it moves differently than it does in the material plane one possible flaw in while beond the witch light for a fake character reads I easily lose track of time my poor sense of time means I'm always late of course you don't have to do something like that if you're playing a fay wild campaign their understanding of how weird time is could actually benefit the party second is magic magic is not rare in the Fay wild it's everywhere in Arch phas emotions affect their entire realm plants can be sentient intelligent more dangerous than they would be in the material plane unlike in other places where magic might be more Uncommon or only for people who have studied it like wizards magic in the Fay wild is just a fact of life it is weird it is not necessarily understood it just is next is deals I've talked about deals in the past so I'm not going to get too far into it here but suffice it to say that a character from The Fay wild would have an understanding of how to be tricky or how to look out for someone else's trickiness and they will likely take whether on the F wild or any other plane any sort of Deal or exchange very seriously even if no one else is another possible flaw from Wild Beyond The Witch light is I never give away anything for free and always expect something in return that could be because of a personal selfishness and greed or could be out of an abundant sense of caution next is priorities Fay are not likely to care that much about coins so much as they are trinkets that are unique and interesting they may worry more about potentially dangerous plant life than they are burglars if they were raised in a court they may take manners very seriously but care very little about someone's true feelings it really just depends on how they were raised and finally Fay traits in general I'm going to read a little snippet from the critical role Wiki about Fern's personality since it just so perfectly encapsulates what a f might be like Fern is unperturbed and direct her soft Demir voice contrasts with her somewhat erratic insensitive and self-possessed behavior in much the same way as the wonderful looking flowers she wears are actually all poisonous Fay are likely to be mischievous clever forward unpredictable an ideal from while Beyond The Witch light includes changeability change is good which is why I live by an Ever Changing set of rules AKA chaos my advice is to have at least one or two unique traits to your character that indicate their Fay nature that could be physical like are they always decked out in flowers or do they naturally smell like apple fritters or do they have personality quirks like they always have to ask strangers at the bars what they do when they get home or at those bars they have a really weird drink order this will also bring your character to life during role playay obviously you won't have a trait or Quirk or whatever it is for every possible situation that shines like a bright face star but your character will feel fully flushed out and definitely very Fay there are so many infinite ways you could go about this that I'm curious what fake characters you are creating or have created in our own campaign we have a fairy artificer who's on the run from a mage we have a her and gon with a cleric God who no one else has ever heard of we also have a circle of spores Druid elf who just appeared in the woods one day if you're wanting to chat more about the Fay wild or anything in that vein I do have a Discord link is below if you want to join that if that's your thing and I do have a patreon if you want to support me as a content creator I don't actually have any content on there yet so you can also just follow and at a later date if I do post something and you decide it's monetarily worth it you can do it then but I love your ideas so tell me if you have any I also do use them occasionally in our personal campaigns so you know help a girl out like this video have a great whatever it is and I will see you next time [Music] for
