How to Clear Poison Ivy | This Old House

okay Brian there's several things we're using to protect ourself the first is a long pair of pants to protect your body I'm taping them down here so there's no way little pieces of Ivy can get up inside there okay then I had you put on a long sleeve shirt to protect your arms now put those gloves on this is another good thing is to tap the gloves right to the shirt I don't want anything getting up inside your shirt okay all right then I'm going to have you put these on to protect your eyes okay now the one thing I want not to do it's going to be a Temptation it's hot we're sweating go like that if you go like that you're going to wipe oil all over the side of your face from The Ivy and you're going to have a rash like you read about okay remember it's a Vine you go down in here and you want to find the roots okay the more you can get up with the root system the better off will be see how that whole thing's coming up like that all right that's going to help you okay what do we do with it once it's in the bag well we're going to take and put it out for the trash and get rid of it that way I don't want you composting it or or doing anything else with it it's a bad thing and whatever you do don't burn it don't burn it why is that you can get in your nasal passages your lungs it's just total you can get everyone in the neighborhood covered with poison ivy if you wet the ground before you pull it out the roots even come out easier we don't want anyone getting in contact with us when they take it away so let's double bag it and be safe all right now after we spend all this time doing this what can I do to prevent it from coming back well you could put down a nice layer of clean leaves from the front of your house that doesn't have poison ivy in it or you could even take some wood chips put down an 8 or 10 inch layer and that'll keep the Ivy from getting sunlight that's what it wants smother them just pack it in and it'll take care of them this is something that my crew has been using for 2 or 3 years the active ingredient is mineral spirits so I want you to wipe that all over your hands okay it's going to remove any oil that may have gotten on your hands all right so that'll just it's just like a backup okay and this will take it off and you won't get any dermatitis from this Poison Ivy at all okay good we're going to rinse it off with cold water okay and why do we use cold water well because hot water opens up your pores and allows the oil to go inside exactly
