the advantage and disadvantage well the advantage number one advantage is they hold a chart really well and they weigh very very little they're much lighter than a normal battery I've got a little variety of types of batteries but let's just talk about different uses and different styles obviously this is a good old fashioned battery but even though it looks and they look the same there are different styles of this and so let's talk about standard lead-acid starting batteries most common battery out there is in so you buy a battery like that because it's the right battery it has the right amount of coal cranking amps to start your car and every battery is designed to have the programmatic co cranking amps the appropriate size and stuff and and and so this is still the most generic battery you can buy in the most common then let's talk about these high-tech batteries AGM batteries so let me tell you why they came out everybody knows that be a lot of batteries sit around for a long time it goes dead but most people don't think about the fact that in a normal battery it got thirty percent water and seventy percent sulfuric acid and they do not weigh the same amount on the periodic table and stuff water is lighter than sulfuric acid so what happens to a normal battery is that it separates after about a month well too bad things about that one you've got a higher concentration of sulfur I guess it at the bottom - you've got just water at the top and water and and lead plates do not conduct electricity so that battery is really at 70% best-case and so you've got a situation where and of course the other thing is if let's say it's in an area where it's cold a battery that is stratified or separated it's much more likely to get damaged because of freezing you know hot and cold hot and cold line bullet for a season so then a battery that has been continued to be mixed up all the kind that that's driving driven everyday so if you're in a cold area you wonder why your batteries that you drive when your daily driver never freeze but the batteries you left in your tractor for the winner have cracked or have frozen it's because of this separation that we're talking about where the water just moves to the top and it's all free gas it moves to the bottom now this has been a problem since day one on batteries and so what they did about 30 years ago is and they recalled what they were called as they were called gel bands which is the same thing as an AGM battery but basically what it is through chemistry they created a gel that held the sulfuric acid and water together and didn't let it separate as fast instead of separating after 30 days a gel suspended the sulfuric acid and you'd get a year of storage and and they weren't made for automobiles they originally they were made for medical equipment and they were made for emergency lights and things like that the cars and for for vehicles of course you get the same benefit if you let them sit and you let this one sit this one will stay much much longer it charged up and also not separated so it's got it's got the ability to store much longer than a standard yes they they can handle higher GS and vibration but there are some other advantages I can mount the same sideways I cannot it upside down same thing with the Odyssey I've got my choice of how I want to have it because I don't have the kind of venting that would dribble out if I turn this thing on it's fine the only disadvantage to an AGM battery over standard lead acid battery that that means something to me is the fact that if you do let them go down and then you let them go dead they're hard to get back they don't just come back in matter of fact in order to get want to come back if you go to Optimas website they'll tell you they want to try to sell you their pulse AGM charger they're correct in that you need to eat a pulse AGM charger we make one - all I'm matter of fact all of ours are but that's the only way to get the light coating of sulfur that accumulates on their plates to come off so a lot of their batteries get returned they're not back and same thing with other AGM batteries like the Odysseys and stuff it's that you need a proper charger to get them to come back and stuff and that's a difference if you move to high tech you've really got to watch the voltage if you watch a voltage as though I've had customers come to us with over 10 year life even on average if they maintain them properly now we come to the newest generation of batteries and that's lithium ion the advantage and disadvantage well the advantage number one advantage is they hold a charge really well and they weigh very very little they're much lighter than a normal battery my razors love them because if they're if you're a race car and you can save 20 pounds of weight it's really really great they do have a problem in cold and that they're not as effective in cold as when they're nice and warm but they don't have any of the problems of stratification and things that that normal batteries have to what you've got is you've got more power you've got very very lightweight you do have to use a proper charger for them and again it's the same thing if you're gonna maintain it it's got to be a maintainer that can maintain lithium not an old-fashioned charger you should buy with it that says designed for it and be prepared to pay a lot more money now that's that's my biggest thing on them right now is if you buy one of these are about twice as much as one an AGM and about three times more money than a standard wet cell that has a battery but as time goes by if them if the prices and you know this is my opinion the prices come down some I think this is something to look at and stuff and if you are racer then positivity something look at over these because of just the saving twenty pounds of weight up for a lot of my customers race car customers that's great yeah so so this is these are the basic technologies that we've got out here amp hours and Co cranking amps and that's no no normally when you replace the battery you're going to replace it with the same size battery and it's going to have the same cold cranking amps a lot of people move into the optimism the odyssey because both of them and most AGM batteries have more cold cranking amps in the same form factor that a lead acid battery amps in other words like this is usually about a hundred more cold cranking amps and then a group 20 for wet so well if you're into high-performance and you've got a big motor in your car and it's hard to start when especially when it gets warm or whatever this might be a real good reason to buy one of these AGM batteries same thing with lithium ions if you can get way higher watt density or you know in a battery like this that can turn over any kind of vehicle with a lot more oomph and and the same form factor that does it you know that ass so make there's some some reasons other reasons for output power no I am powers and powers are how long a battery can go you know with up with a low and you get a hundred amp hour battery it's one amp for 100 hours is what it shouldn't run out before it gets too low that are before it goes to a voltage that's gonna start hurting it and stuff bigger is better for amp hours and usually amp hours or when you're concerned with coaches and motorhomes and and things and even golf carts and that's what you look for it is a higher power coal brain cancer of course what you look for to turn over a motor and then the bigger of course the better you know in the sense that stuff but basically that's it that's my story on on battery technologies and stuff and different batteries and I'm gonna end it with one last thing a lot of people come in and say hey I heard you can't put a battery on concrete it's gonna it's gonna drain it down and let me tell you work where that myth came from that but it actually wasn't probably a myth 100 years ago first batteries that were ever made were made out of wood if you own a wood battery then you might have a problem putting it on concrete but if you've got a new battery you don't have to worry about it so for all my friends that always stick their batteries on wood blocks and stuff because somehow that battery's gonna get drained because you left it on concrete no that won't happen dude the reason you might want to put on window there is one Avenue or one aspect and that is the temperature of floors if you want to make a battery lasts a long time muda why because we're batteries we really would like to reside us between seventeen eighty degrees all the time nice humidity they don't evaporate and stuff but short of that that's my story anyway thank you pleasure talking in support grants that support grassroots Motorsports get your chemical solutions from CRC industries visit CRC industries dot-com to learn more
