hi I'm Shannon and in this episode of tools 101 we'll be diving into Drilling and driving accessories with so many options out there we want to make sure that you're choosing the right one for your project so let's get started welcome to Ryobi tools 101. [Music] be sure to subscribe hit that notification Bell so you're the first to hear new product announcements DIY projects tool tips and so much more let's break down the difference between our drilling bits and our driving bits our drilling bits are what we're going to use to drill small to large holes in materials such as wood plastic metal or masonry our driving bits are what will be used to attach Fasteners such as screws nuts or bolts to connect two or more work pieces together [Music] next let's talk about driving bits there are many different types such as your Phillips slotted Square hex Torx and nut drivers you want to match your driving bit to your Fastener head and that will give you that nice strong hold so that when you're driving that Fastener it's not stripping so you'll also see impact rated bits and those must be used with your impact driver if you try to use non-impact rated bits with your impact driver they will shatter foreign let's take a look at our drilling bits the two most common finishes you'll see are black oxide which will be for hardwood softwood fiberglass or steel your titanium coated finish is what you'll use to reduce friction and it will last a little bit longer than your black oxide you'll also see other finishes that are used for various materials next we have the shank this is the part of the drill bit tip that fits into the drill and is secured by the Chuck you have round Shanks which can be used with a drill driver you have hex Shanks that can be used with the drill driver as well as an impact driver lastly is your SDS shank and that's used for concrete drills and works specifically with your SDS Plus or SDS Max rotary hammer drills next let's talk about sizes of your drill bits common drill bit kits range from sizes 1 16 of an inch to a half inch let's review the different types of drill bits starting with the most common The Twist drill bit which is used for drilling holes the smaller drill bits are used to create a pilot hole in your wood to help prevent it from splitting when driving screws the way this works is you are actually clearing a path for your screw to go into without having to worry about too much material being built up inside causing that pressure and having your wood split I always say when in doubt always drill a pilot hole your twist drill bit will be used in materials such as your light metal wood plastic or ceramics next is your Brad Point and this has a w shape centered point for Precision Drilling this prevents wandering or walking this is most common and you'll find this as you begin projects where you may be drilling a drilling bit into your wood and you'll notice it kind of walking away the w point will actually stick into the wood to give it a spot to hold on to to begin Drilling and that way you know that you are secure and ready to drill this is most commonly used with hard or soft Woods next is your Spade or paddle bit and these are used to bore holes with large diameter through material such as wood imagine this in a renovation where you need to put a hole through your 2x4 structure to run maybe a pipe or an electrical wire that's the time that you would want to use that bit if you need to create a clean hole with a flat base you'll use your forstner bit these are only to be used with a drill press and are commonly used in woodworking another common drill bit used in woodworking is the countersink and this creates a recess to allow your Fastener head to sit flush with your material this is most commonly used or you might see this in something like Cabinetry with professionals so this gives you the chance to actually step up your game and create the same professional look in your projects if you're working with materials such as ceramic or porcelain tile you'll want to avoid any chipping and cracking and you can do this by using your tile drill bit just be sure to wear a dust mask if you're working with material such as non-tempered glass or ceramic You'll Use Your Glass drill bit this is only to be used with your drill driver at a slow speed and be sure to wear a dust mask if you're working with more tough materials such as concrete brick or block you'll want to use your masonry bit and this is only to be used with your hammer drill also be sure to wear hearing protection if you need to drill a large hole through your material such as wood metal masonry or tile you'll use your hole saw and this works by attaching to an arbor which will help guide your hole saw through your material now if you need to fasten a nut or bolt you'll use your nut driver and this is best used with the impact driver now lastly we have the extensions and holder bits and these will really help ease your frustration and woodworking because they can go into those hard to reach tight areas in your projects and the extension bit is great for that because it lets you of course extend without having to bring your entire drill into that area your holder bit will really help you with holding onto your Fastener because sometimes when we're doing projects you may find that your Fastener may fall or slip and this really helps you give it that solid hold so that you can drive it into our material with so many different drill and driving accessories just remember there's one for every job so you're Now set up for success and you can get out there and make the best of your projects thanks for joining us and we'll see you next time [Music] thanks for joining me on this episode of Ryobi tools 101 be sure to like And subscribe
