big each month you know we used to have directv we were paying a hundred and five dollars a month before we cut the cord and that was just for cable we had a separate bill for internet with a different provider yeah like you we were tired of paying so much and began exploring live streaming services we did have to pay an early cancellation fee but it was well worth it like us you can terminate your direct tv contract in six easy steps yup canceling directv starts with calling the retention department that is step one you can't terminate your directv contract online you have to call and do it over the phone with a customer service agent now get a pin and write this number down or press pause call 1-800-228-2020 when the call connects enter your account information you'll be routed to a retention representative a normal customer service agent can't help you get out of a directv contract but a retention representative can once you reach them say that you want to cancel your contract this is step two expect them to try to get you to stay and to ask you why you want to cancel that's step three tell the agent it's not worth it that you don't watch directv and that you can watch your shows cheaper through someone else tell them you're tired of being in a contract your reason doesn't matter as much as your firmness yeah and it's likely to expect them to bring up the cost to cancel directv as a way to get you to stay know what your early cancellation penalty will be before you call when we canceled we had just over six months left on our contract and had to pay a penalty of 142.70 it was well worth it though was within two months we had recouped those costs directv does not like to advertise their early cancellation fee but it's 20 dollars a month on a pro rated basis for each month you have remaining on your contract they also charge you a fifteen dollar deactivation fee now obviously lots of people ask if there is a way to get out of that cancellation outages that you're joining the peace corps or that you're canceling for a deceased family member yeah directv clearly doesn't want you to cancel thus all the fees but they like to try to keep you with deals and incentives too they will offer unadvertised discounts they'll give you nfl sunday ticket or premium channel packages for free for a few months or even for a year or they might ask you to switch some of your services to at t to get you to bundle resist the bundle remember why you're cutting the cord you don't need to stay in a contract or pay what you're paying if you want to see receiving end of a lot of upset and frustrated customers remember that the rep is only doing their job so just try to be friendly while you're being firm once you've given your reason and resisted customer service at 1-800-531-5000 to confirm they have it and that your contract is canceled now you can count on this the rep will try to offer you one last discount to get you to stay just kindly say that your decision is final before you hang up ask the rep to walk you through your final bill confirm what it will be and what each charge is for if you have any questions now is a time to ask then you're ready for step six paying your final bill make sure you know the exact day that you canceled your service and that the date is reflected on your final bill once you've made your payment you're free congratulations seriously i did a happy dance and then i ripped that stupid dish off my wall well i didn't because that would have damaged the house but i wanted to i was so glad that i was free now it's worth noting that these restrictions for how to cancel directv and how to return direct tv equipment generally works for any cable company so if you have cox or time warner or if you watch a lot of sports one more popular option to consider is fubo tv at sixty five dollars a month it's on the more expensive end of cable replacement services but it's worthwhile if you want access to football soccer basketball and other live sports as well as a ton of news and entertainment channels and importantly it also carries local networks which sling and phylo typically do not however as we cover in our cord cutting video that's absolutely no reason to stick with cable or directv you can get local through fubo and other streaming services or you can buy a very affordable antenna and enjoy them that way yep and one important thing for you to remember is that before you actually cancel your direct tv or cable take some time to try out the streaming services we've
