Me and Edvin will be doing
roach cabins and there are plenty of alternatives The first one is an umbrella
cabin, which you can buy. The second one isn't really a roach
cabin, but you can try it. It has a cancer cage. And the third one is a
handmade roach cabin made of hens net. This is the best roach cabin
I have ever tried. We will not only show you which of
these cabins that catches the most fish but also where to place them in
order to catch as much roach as possible and how to make the
holes to get the cabins through the ice, then you also need to
put some bait inside the cabins which we will show you in our
secret roach mixture. I actually grew up next to
the lake that is behind me And I made a video
here about 13 years ago were I put in roach cabins in. So I've got a long experience
in roach cabins. We got a roach pro here. I don't have as much experience,
I have also made roach huts, but with umbrellas. But I have never managed
to do this 100%. - Which one do you
believe in the most? - Well I must say that I believe
in the crashfish cabin, if the target is crashfish party
and catching crayfish. For roach maybe, I've heard that people
catches roach from crayfish cabins. But I've never tried it.
Later in todays video - Do you think there is anything here?
- No. - Yes it will be a lot.
- Damn! - Damn!
- What is that? It bit me. I can say from experience that
this roach cabin will to 99.9% catch the most fish. A cabin like this has three ways
to get inside. The roach can swim in here, it can swim in here, and also at another part. There. Then you put food inside
so the roaches smells it. Then swims and searches for an entrence. When the hole is found it swims inside,
through the hole and is stuck inside when you pull
the cabin out. The thing that is so good about these,
is that it has 2 different floors, It has a bottom floor,
and after the fish gets boored it swims up to the second floor. It's usually here,
the roach gets packed like herrings when they have been,
in the cabin for a while. To get the roach out there is a hatch, which you can put your hands in
and just take them out. In order to find the cabin,
I have attached a can which is stuck onto a normal
line in order to put it in the water. There are slightly different price ranges
and some pros and cons with these cabins. For example this crayfish cage which
is the cheapest of them all and also works for catching crayfish
so in this case you get 2 in 1. But I actually think that it will be the
worst when it comes to catching roach. Then we have this umbrella cabin
which lies in between the other two cabins in price. The good thing about this one is that
you don't have to cut a hole in the ice, you just need an 200mm ice drill
to make the hole. Then you put the cabin through the ice
and unfold it under the water like this. You can also use it as an umbrella but
it's probably not a practical idea. Now onto the last roach cabin, and the price for this is approximately
SEK 700 at the local roach cabin maker. However, if you're going to buy material
in order to build a cabin for yourself then this would be the
cheapest and it would catch the most fish. - Let's see! Now we're going to my basement
to build our own cabins. Before we do, we shall read some comments. First comment:
Will you continue with your podcast? - Yes we will very soon,
so make sure to checkout spotify! Second comment:
- Sandra wants us to camp in a roof tent on a car. We will do this during the year
but not today but later on. Third comment:
Question that wonders if we could fish with baits made out of tree wich Edvin
made when he was young. - Both me and Edvin made that type of
baits when we were young and we are planning on making a video like that soon. Fourth comment: Could you say
hi to my friend because he is bald? - Well of course, Hello!
Make sure to tell us below if you want us to say hi to you or your friends
in the next video. - As usual we shall read your greetings
but before we do, we need to start working on the roach cabins so it will come later
in the video. - Luckily, you don't need very much
material to build a roach cabin. You need a pair of gloves, a nipper, 2mm
steel wire, 0,48mm steel wire. Then you need steel mesh and you
need to make sure that the holes aren't to big. And at last you need hens net. As you can see on this already done
roach cabin there is 3 rings with the 2mm steel wire wich
holds the frame intact. We will start by measuring how long this
ring needs to be, which diameter. Then we will make one ring for the top,
one for the middle and one for the bottom. - I've now measured around the cabin
and it was 170cm of 2mm steel wire. - Now Edvin I need your help to measure. - Yes I think so, these are really stiff. - If you hold up here. - Yes I'm holding. - Here we have 150cm,
then a little bit more. - This will not be so small,
it will be a real roach trap. - So now it's done, you just put it under
the ice and catch the roach with this. - We will catch you
if you don't behave. - The best thing is, now when we have
made the first it will be easy to measure. - Sure, you just put them together.
You are so smart sometimes Tobbe. - Now I have a whole round ring
right here and I have patched it at the top. Now we're going to lock it together and use the 0,48 wire over the patched area. Like a lock. I will cut this part here, It doesn't really matter
how long it is. It fell to the ground,
that can happen. Wrap it tightly around the metal.
Be sure to make it really tight. Keep going the whole way. It is really important to fasten it properly. Otherwise, there is a risk
that the entire roach hut will fail. That's why I get to do this,
and not Tobbe. This kind of thing takes strength. - I'm the smart one... and I'm the pretty one.
I have 2 good qualities, you have 1. We'll see how smart you are
later if you've made this one big enough. Look how good these one is. 3 rings, exactly the same size.
I'm proud so far. Tobbe was a bit clever who
managed to make the rings the same size. Now it's time to put on the net. Otherwise, the roaches will escape. It is important to cut a bit outside, It's better to have more net to work with. Because then it has to be folded in. Now it gets a little tricky. Take the outermost part and fold in,
just like this. In this way, the ring is locked in the net. This ring was perfect. This takes the most time,
so I do the same with this ring. As we told you, we will have
3 of these rings. So I will start too. I will use this 0.48mm wire line to
make it last even better, I will wrap it around the edges
so that everything is in place. Spin it around just like this,
and it will stay in place. And continues along the entire ring. We haven't done this one, but you can
see that there is a hole in the middle up to the upper floor, it's there so the roaches can swim
up and get stuck up there. So that more roaches can
swim in all the time. I'm going to make a pipe like
that now, just the right size I also fasten it together with
wire line, just like with the rings. I feel like a craftsman
when I make roach huts. We will see if it's worth it. I cut off what sticks out at the bottom, Something like this.
Looks good. The pipe should
be in the middle. Here is a perfect place. Then, turn everything around. Then it should also be locked
on this side as well. - You know what you just made?
A sombrero! - What's that? It's a hat! Or maybe this way. Look at it! I'm really happy with this one. In the beginning it felt like we were
making sausage grills to grill... But I was surprised at
how nice it turned out. Cutting of these things. So the roaches
can swim inside. Something like this. Perfect for the roaches. Fold the ends in the
same way as before. All these 3 must be put
together on the big piece. This part should be the bottom. It needs to be attached,
this can be a bit tricky. The net wants one way and
we want the other... But, the harder something is to do… the better it will be. I cut them off here, which will
then be attached to the ring. - Put it down now, Edvin. Time to attatch this one. Now we will put on floor by floor. - How far apart should it be? - Something like this?
- Yeah. - Itsn't this too small?
- No, it's good. Time to attatch the
middle part now. Take your wire line and just
wrap around the entire ring and fasten it. I will show you how to. In with it like this,
and then pull it out, Then, spin it around like this, and presses it tight. This is a good height for the cage,
because if it's too high it won't fit in the car So this is good.
And just cut it like I do. I feel like a hairdresser. Let's see if this is a perfect
fit, but it is not easy to put it on... Time to fold these ones too. NO... Damn it,
It fell down... I will never get it out!
- Yeah, it's fine. Now I'm going to cut up here
so they get an entrance. Look how nice it gets. We will catch roach
with this one. I cut a rectangle with
this leftover part. Now I'm going to double
fold this part like this put it on the roache trap. Fold it down like this and
stripe it with wire line. To keep the roach from escaping,
I have a secret trick, I have this big 2mm wire, and with it I will make a door so
that you can open and close the trap. Close the door... It is important to bend the line in an
orderly manner so that it does not open. Here we go... Cut some more line,
and I will make it like an L Then, try it out. There we go! Look at it.
And to open it you just pull it out. Open it, then close
it and put this one in. Do you see the result? This is a really
nice roach trap! Some of you probably understand
why this one won't catch a single roach... We don't have an entrance! We will make 3 entrances
in the lower part. So there are many
options for the roaches. The local roach manufacturer
has made the entrances like this Once the roaches have swum in,
they can't find their way out again. That's the thing about this trap. If we make entrances like this,
we will get a lot of roaches. We have brought out the chicken nets,
because now the chickens must be locked in! We're going to cut some out,
and now I'm just going to go by feel, If you want bigger roaches, then
you make bigger entrances with bigger holes. Fewer and more roaches, fewer holes. I will try. These nets just rolling back
to me. - Help me Tobbe, help me. The net is taking me. Then I just start cutting like this. Fingers are bleeding
from all the cutting... Now I have finished
cutting this part. On one side there is a
smoother edge difference from this edge. Look how sharp it is. This edge should be the
cone of the cone... cone of the cone... We say so. Fold it into a
reasonably sized hole, This hole is perfect for
like 2 hecto roaches it's a good size. Chicken netting is much easier
to work with than the harder material. Something like this. I'd swim right into this hole if I were a roach! The cone should sit here.
I just measure the hole with the cone, It should be in the middle. Not too
far down and not up either. Hold it and just
start cutting like this. A tip is not to cut too big in the
beginning, rather cut smaller. Put the cone into the hole. It wasn't so bad. It was not easy to cut a round hole. I think this will be great. Time to attatch it. Fold in all edges. fold it around and then som wire It's important not to get any sharp edges the roaches will feel that and turn around no sharp edges here It looks good Tobbe, better than
I expected real stable and nice, with chicken net just make 2 more identical If you like us in Team Galant you're more
than welcome at sportfiskemässan the 15-17 March in Jönköping The whole crew from Kanalgratis will be
there, so come see us also the final of Fly VS Jerk moved til
Saturday instead of friday This time at Krog & Co in Jönköping go to www.kanalgratis.se/flyvsjerk See you at the fair only one thing left, the handle I will use this 2mm wire I will cut off like 80 cm I'll take som pliers to the center and
then twist it to a loop It looks like a squid or something
we'll attach it to both sides - It's the final stretch
- Come on Edvin that will do, not the prettiest but - We're ready
- well done Tobbe, look at this roach cabin - It will deliver
- It's really stable 5 star roach cabin Hotel for sure just open up to take them out good, really good I didn't have high hopes but it
turned out great We need to cook som porridge,
secret roach mix so the roaches want to check in If we just put in the water like this
they wont check in they need a buffé with food I've thought about it a long time
where if you should get my secret recipe You are the best subscribers so
yes, I will tell you the secret Make sure to use pen and paper
to write it up, It's very advanced The first thing you'll need is a lof of oats Cans of corn, and for the good smell
vanilla powder You start with a lot of oats in a
saucepan, and then boil it almost as you do oat porridge To the same texture as
wallpaper paste Add a lot of it, we need to all
4 cages we need a lot of batter Pour some vanilla powder
like this It smell like a lot of roaches will come We'll fill up with water to cover up
just to the top something like that look delicious? just let it boil, put it on the stove on high heat, I've got no patience just stir all the time, until it feels
like wallpaper paste When you arm starts to hurt
you know it's ready Look at that, real wallpaper paste just add more oats, so we can squeese
it to make balls we need more space so I fetched a
larger bucket perfect to mix everything in Just pour it in, maybe overkill with
the whole jar but hey, lets do it Corn it something the roaches really
love It smells a lot so perfect to mix in Whatever you do make sure to
use everything in the jar we need a lot more oats, as much
until you don't get messy hands mix it well to see if it's enough
or in need for more oats Not enough so we need more oats Damn! let's see if it's enough almost like chocolate balls but without chocolate I need to roll up the sleeves
let's get to work with my hands We need more, more. Edvin, pour
some more I'm coming to help you out - damn
- damn that's all the oats we have It's empty We should have had a baking machine It's so hard to mix this Now we squeeze it to som balls
the size of oranges The bigger they are the longer it takes
for them to resolve in the water the perfect roach ball Smaklig målitd Why didn't you tell me yhou took the car?
I walked all the way with the cabins The most important thing before you step
out on the ice is the security You need ice nails if the ice will break
always wear them when on the ice and then a ice skewer, to make sure the
ice is thick enough we know the ice is thick enough today
but always make sure This feels safe, if the ice doesn't break
when you stabb it hard It's at least 7-10 cm thick, but today
more like 15 cm Just walk out on the ice and get to work I'ts a lot of work, both to make them
and lay them out I've got my sled with all the gear needed It's a science to know where to place
the cabin for the best result as possible It's 3 different ways to know where to
place them in the lake The first one is to ask other people
who often lay out fish traps If they can give you some tips on
locations where there are roaches number 2 is to driver around with a boat
and look at the sonar where the schools are If there are a lot of roach there, it's
usually the same in the winter The 3rd is to lay the traps where you
get roach when you angle in the summer but there are usually some differencies
in the summer compared to winter at this place I angled a lot one fall
and got a lot of roach 50m out I've tried fish traps here in the winter
and got results straight away after that I've layed out fish traps
here every year since the only thing it's usually pretty
slow in january in the winter but when we reach March/April
the traps are full of fish One of us are the Roach Master and that's
Tobbe, I'm gonna listen to him let's lay the first trap here right
where we stand lets start with this crayfish cage lets shovel some snow so it's easier
to see the ice This crayfish cage is a lot smaller
than the cabins we made So we can just drill 2 holes next to each
other thick ice now we just hack away in the middle
with the skewer we need to scoop out the ice we take out cage and the put 2 small
balls in it - one small and a bigger one
- looks great close it off I don't think we will catch a single
roach on this one what do you think? leave a comment bye bye this will do shovel some snow This is a bit bigger than the other one
I need to hack a bigger hole you can do it with a chainsaw aswell
but I don't have one juist hack away, I'll use the cage as a
guide on the size of the hole This will take time, you need to
help out Edvin - Yes
- HUGG! Here's the ice floe, just shove it under
the ice if you have a big hole, easiest is to use
the shovel to remove the ice it's more efficient You cannot just lay fish traps everywhere
you need to talk to the land owner If you are a member of this fishing club
you are allowed to lay some fish traps You need to write down your name
and number on this floating and also 3 sticks, to mark out the hole
so no one falls through in the water please check the local rules before just make a knot and tie upp the floater This is the trap that I bought from the
local guy this one wil hold a lot so I'll put in a
lot of balls Why you put more faith in this than
ours? interesting question, often do theese traps
perform better the second year around Then they get a bit rusty and are not
so flashy in the water It's a good thing that this is a bit rusty let's shut down the roach factory bye bye - Did you close the lid?
- I really hope so - It was you responsibility
- No it was not falling in the water I haven't done it so far I'll put it on the side like this
just 2 more holes left Time to take out the umbrella, not because
It's raining this basket that you unfold in the water You don't need a big hole just use
the drill extra points for speed and simplicity at the bottom you have a zipper
where you put the balls and also take out the fishes later on It's tight but it will work you made them perfect Tobbe just a hair bigger and they would'nt fit 2 balls is enough in this one It's not the largest trap in the hole it goes then you use the stick to push add a bit of pressure and you feel
it unfold add a clamp to stop it to fold back then just reel it down and wait The last cage left, the one that we made So hard We go and collect som sticks so we can
mark all our spots here's some loose sticks. thats perfect we need 12 sticks I really love this latch, makes life easier in with the rest of the balls
2 at the top and 3 in the bottom close the lid and then in the water good luck little roach cabin Our precious It took so many hours to make last step is to set out the sticks
easiest way is to hack a small hole otherwise they will tip over all the holes are done, now we just
wait for a week or so which trap will catch most fish?
comment below It's one week later I really hope there is a lot of fish in
the traps I've got the same feeling today as
christmas morning when you where 7 years old, you don't
know what to expect If it's like 1 roach or 100? Or a rudd or pike? It's so exciting I usually bring a shovel Ice scoop a bucket for the roach and at last a ice skewer I hope to win big when it comes
to roach We've invested a lot of time in this There they are It was fortunate of us to set the sticks or more like skill of us, otherwise we
couldn't see them it has snowed a lot lets begin to shovel really thick polar ice I can't find the hole
where is it? here!, here!
I see the black ice here's the hole The one who seeks will find not that thick, maybe only 20 cm here's the line from the crayfish cage Just start to hack away The ice is so hard I can't do more Help we took turn, the ice was so thick - Now
- YES! must have ice scoop now It's time to see the first trap this is the crayfish cage and I don't
think there will be any fishes here - you think any crayfish?
- No maybe some just up up wow 2 balls! perfect, we can use the in the other
traps But this one was the last time we used the crayfish cage, didn't deliver as
just as we thought Now we are at the roach cabin with my
highest hope The one from the local guy, it's a bit
rusty the new one is a bit flashy and this
one is more camoflauged If this one is empty I will become a
bit worried I see the hole a big hole here's the rope, just be careful not
to break it We need to help out both of us
this one is a big hole Puuh, that was really hard, I'm so tired
the ice is so thick look at this big chunk we got loose Look at that Pig!
It's like 20 cm Tobbe Let's shov it under the ice good night - Is it coming up again?
- nah that's a small piece I'm so excited, lets pull it up The old fish trap from the local guy I want it to just shimmer of fish shimmer, here it goes YEEES! ROACH! a lot of roach! Tobbe we made it, we got roach It's like 20-25 Roaches, imagine our trap
has got more roach? I counted to like 25 roach, they've been
here over a week and our balls looks brand new
that's a good recipe from Tobbe We can use them again Let the rest in the water, before we
put them in this roach bucket some water open up the store, I'm so happy
right now I got some roach in my christmas sock come on They are really nice, and fat theese roach They really digged the recipe this is the last one, look how fat it is We lower it down again, we know it will
work again now we get roach again much faster
good luck, fish well 25 roach, that's enough for one
ice fishing day we usually fish over 2 days so we
need double up with roach let's hope the next trap has as much
roach as this one It's the umbrella cage, I'm excited for
that one What's this Gekås Ullared? It's famous, "Tobias Ekvall"..... Nothing to see here Ullared bottle, that's a good one Do not drill in the middle of this hole
the line will break then start to drill a bit to the side to close to the sticks, I've got a
stick up my behind I really feel that there is gonna be
a lot of roach here Don't know if it's as good as the last on I've got it This is exciting, I feel it in the line
du du du du du du This is the smart with this one
just unclamp it and release with the pipe and it will
fold so we can pull it up Just pull up now, Do you think we got
anything Tobbe? - No
- Yes - damn
- Yes, it is some what the...? There's no roach, it's only crayfish We hade a crayfish cage, no crayfish But this umbrella cage, Crayfish Look at this crayfish, it's slow
not like in the summer Then they will pinch you
this one's too tired He's eaten to much roach food Let's release him not a single roach
only 2 crayfish OUCH, he bit me this one's stuck He's liking it here, he doesn't want to
go back in the water number 2, he's got 2 claws 2 nice crayfish, let's put them back in
the water don't come back to this umbrella cage
stay at the bottom We didn't get any roach but I believe in it
let's give it more time exactly as I thought, these cheap umbrella
cages aren't that good We've got one more and that the
most exciting one, the one we made last hole now This is our precious trap here Now Edvin let's see if there are some
roach here I'm so excited now, Is our roach cabin
the best of the bunch? Or does it need some time to be great? I hope it's the best of the bunch Show your muscles Tobbe It's fish down there YES Yes, it's working - 3 crayfish
- yes 3 We've built both a fish trap and
a crayfish cage, 2 in 1 Not most roach but the most different
species how many species in one week
under the ice It was exactly as I thought, the old cage
delivered best the crayfish cage nothing umbrella cage, nothing And this one did deliver a whole lot
of roach It has already started to rust after this season this may well be the
best of the bunch not a crayfish party in the winter
let's release them they are stiff as a stick We've caught a whole lot of roach This is as much as i usually gets
in the spring I catch a whole lot more It's easy around 100-200 roach
at this place It's definitly approved result in the
middle of winter we've done the math, we've bought
materials for 819:- We've bought enough for like 8
fish traps that'll make 1 roach cabin cost like 100:- If you buy a already made one from
a local store it will cut you back around 600-800:- you save money by doing them yourself but, It'll take around 3-4 hours / cage and then you'll have fish traps that
last like 3-5 seasons and also it takes a lot of time to
lay them out and also pull them up But in the long run you save money if you got the time to do so It's pretty fun to build your own stuff It's something extra besides ice fishing
in the winter Don't forget to like this video
if you would like more videos when we builds stuff, and comment your
best roach cabin tip We'll see you in the next video subtitles by A. Eriksson
