hey what's up everybody thanks for tuning in to father sun diy garage joe is out of town this week so i'm flying solo on this project actually going to make this shadow box for joe and his new bride so stay tuned to see how i did [Music] so [Music] all right here we go using the chop saw to roughly cut each side piece out since i'll be painting the project i decided to use poplar it's a pretty good wood to use for painting now just flattening out the pieces by running them through the planer a bit and over to the table saw to cut down each piece to the proper width and back to the chop saw to cut 45 degrees in each piece and cut it down to the proper length here i'm cutting grooves in each piece and dados the grooves are going to be for the plexiglas and the dado on the side will be for the back panel and there it is now cutting the plexiglas and this plexiglas has a plastic film on each side so it's not getting scratched as i push it through the table saw all right now on to the assembly of the box getting a little help from spongebob here taping each corner just to hold them together a lot easier spreading some glue out and that tape really helps hold those pieces together while you're gluing up all the other sides inserting the glass and that's probably something i wouldn't do in the future it made it really hard to paint the box with that glass in there even though i tried to keep the plastic sheeting on the glass it just made it difficult to to finish up the rest of the box sanding down and painting and here's clamping down the corners keep them tight now i'm cutting out the back i'm using mdf here okay i decided to add some splines to each corner to give it a little more strength created this jig here to hold the box at a 45 degree angle to the blade worked out pretty good putting two splines in on each corner for the splines i'm just using some cut off purple heart here actually gives it a nice contrast for the lighter poplar but i'll be painting it anyway but just still wanted to see how it looked or once the glue was dry used a multi-tool to trim the splines down i wouldn't recommend this a better tool would be a pole saw to get really close up in there you got to be really careful with that multi-tool and now sanding it down nice and flush with the box all right check out those corners i really like the splines here too bad i'm gonna paint over them but uh i think i'll definitely try this on another project and now on to painting and here's what was difficult because i had to cover up that glass again and it just made it much harder to paint and once that coat was dry now i peeled off all of the tape and paper and here you can see my wife finished off the back with a little bit of fabric really dressed up the inside of the box now i'm just attaching the backing to the rest of the box i didn't really like the way the glass turned out on the first time so what i did is i cut a slot in the top and put in a new piece of glass that really looked much nicer than the original one where i tried to paint around it all right and here's the finished product hey thanks for watching everybody be sure to hit like and subscribe and we'll see you next time
