the box stitch is elegant strong unique allowing you to stitch 90° Corners together the box stitch can only be done by hand stitching so it's a great skill to have in this video I'm going to be teaching you how to box stitch the tools you need for box stitching are no different to hand stitching I would add to make sure that you have an o or a scratch oil in terms of leather you want to make sure that you layer the gusset around 4 mm plus thick and firm so use vegetable tan leather if you're using Chrome tan leather make sure you layer the leather with firm leather because you don't want to be having a soft gusset or having a thin gusset because we'll be stitching through it this video is going to be for the iPad SL tablet PDF pattern but you can use these skills on other box stitch patterns if you want to make this pattern I'll link it in the description to begin we're going to make sure the pattern is cut out and glued onto some card I'll overcut some rectangles and bond them together then Trace around the leather with the gusset piece and cut them out at this point I would recommend you get some sandpaper and sand this top and bottom of the gusset to round it make sure it's consistent I use 240 grit sandpaper and of course there are safety tips when using sandpaper next we'll crease around the edges with a 1.5 mm Edge creaser and then use our pricking irons on the main piece for this we're simply going to go all the way through the leather like we normally would for the gusset we're only going to go all the way through on the top and then only Mark the leather from here below then we'll use our oil to go through the side of the gusset we'll then hand this to top of the gusset where the pricking irons have gone all the way through we'll have no back stitches and end the Stitch with a double cast and secure the thread if you want to learn how to hand Stitch you can view this video here then bevel both sides only at the top where the stitching is crease the edges then burnish only the top you can dye the rest of the edges we'll then bevel the main piece only on the grain side then crease and burnish next we'll apply adhesive and bond the pieces together we'll then hand Stitch the gusset to the main piece we'll start where the Stitch ended and again we'll have no back stitches at the start because we use the same side pricking irons on both sides we won't be casting the thread to get the same angle stitches on both sides you can use an all to make it easier to pass the needles through now as you Stitch along you're going to come to a point especially around corners where the stitches Stitch holes don't line up with the inside so the outside Stitch holes don't line up with the inside Stitch holes you need to travel a further distance around the outside compared to the inside now what you can do is actually skip a stitch and this is what I'm going to do so what I'm going to do is I'm going to have this Stitch here go here and that means that this Stitch hole here has nowhere to go how we're going to skip a stitch is we're going to get this one here and we we going to go through to this one here we have two threads sticking out here we're going to get this thread here and we're going to go over the thread and then we're going to go through here and then what's what's going to happen here is this thread here is going to pull that thread down and what we're going to have is we're going to have a lock stitch in the middle there and then what that will do is that will make this we've skipped this Stitch here and now the the holes line up and that is how you skip a stitch then we'll finish with a double cast remember to make sure you secure the threads and that's it that is how you can box stitch with having no back stitches this gives a continuous look let me know in the comments section if this has helped you box stitching remember to practice and you'll be a pro in no time don't forget to visit my website first class leathercraft for leathercraft courses PDF pattern and also my blog that's it for this video be sure to like and subscribe and don't forget to enjoy your leather crafting
