so you're thinking about getting started in the career of permanent makeup what do you do next what would life look like if you were a permanent makeup artist how do you learn who do you learn from online in person how do you find a trainer and is the money really as good as they say it is well we're going to answer all those questions and More in today's video hi I'm Shay Danielle I am a permanent makeup artist I've been in this industry for well over a decade I own a beautiful Studio here in Calgary Alberta Canada and I've trained over 80 000 artists across the world and my sole purpose my passion my goal is to help raise and shape the next generation of permanent makeup artists and that could be you alright let's get comfy cozy and let's talk first of all let's start with what does my day today look like what is it like to be a permanent makeup artist well it's pretty freaking awesome I must say especially if you are so passionate about this industry about making people feel beautiful building up their confidence and getting that instant gratification of before and after so I get to the studio sit down with my assistant we go over our day we take a look at what type of clients we have coming in to see us and then by 10 am I'm starting to tattoo so each day looks a little bit different when it comes to clients but I'm a bit of a jack of all trades and I do all sorts of procedures we do cosmetic tattooing so brows lips eyeliner we do tiny tattoos paramedical work and smaller Express browse services like brow laminations tin slash lips all that good stuff as well so I see anywhere from four to five clients a day now you're trying to do the math what do I charge my prices are high because I've been doing this for a long time my experience level is really really good so my prices do reflect that but that doesn't mean that this can't be a very lucrative industry even for beginners so let's take a look at an example here so if you're a new artist and maybe you're not a season so you're seeing three clients a day and you're charging let's say four hundred dollars for a pair of eyebrows that's twelve hundred dollars a day can you imagine taking home twelve hundred dollars a day and that is on the low side let me tell you Cassidy do the math what does that work out to a month five days a week I'm an artist not a mathematician s 36 000 a month times that by 12. 432 000 a year now tell me another industry that you can make that much money in have so much fun in and become certified in as little as two days I don't think it exists I literally think we're the only industry out there that works this way no yes you're right you just heard me say two days and I'm gonna talk about training and how you can get into this industry right now so I own and operate an online training platform it's shopshaddaniel.com and we've got over 50 online courses that help artists level up get better at what they're doing improve their skills get better healed work and to learn new Services as well but this is not necessarily where you should start as much as I want you to check out our online platform I'm here to be very honest and transparent with you if you're thinking about getting into this industry the best place to start is with Hands-On training and like I just mentioned yes some of these courses are two days as little as two days and you're certified to start tattooing people it's crazy but what I'm here to share with you is what to look for when you're trying to find a trainer so not every program has two days there are some that are longer there's some apprenticeship style programs out there but we're going to tell you what to look for so I used to be a Hands-On trainer I trained lots and lots of students Hands-On here in Calgary Alberta and they are very successful in doing so well they've been in the industry for six seven years I'm not training right now just online training but when you're looking for a program or an instructor or a trainer let's consider the location are they local to you that would be very convenient but it's not always the only answer sometimes you have to consider traveling to train with someone who you really want to learn from we recently did a tiny tattoo training here and we had the majority of our students were actually from the state so they took a flight grabbed a hotel and they hung out here and learned the Art and Science of tiny tattoos so don't dismiss a potential trainer or instructor just because they're not close by sometimes it's absolutely worth traveling for now let's talk about the length of the training like I mentioned so you're going to see some two-day courses out there some three-day programs out there and there's also some longer ones too some are 10 days some are eight weeks it really depends on the curriculum and how they break it down sometimes it's a hybrid course so it actually will contain some online components and then some in-person components sometimes they're Shadow Days which means you get the opportunity to Shadow your instructor sometimes there's live demonstrations sometimes there's group trainings or there's one-on-one trainings and all of this will reflect the price point one-on-one trainings are always going to be more expensive than group trainings there's pros and cons one-on-one isn't always better yes you're getting that one-on-one time with your instructor and they can critique you so well and you don't have any distractions but also you don't have that group experience and sometimes in a smaller group you get to learn from other students questions or their mistakes it invokes a lot of conversation things come up that you might not have thought about you also get to network and you have a group of students or friends that are going through things at the same level as you the support from those students that you're experiencing training with you get to hold on to that for a long time there's sometimes lifelong friendships that are formed in these classrooms it can be really encouraging and uplifting to have friends that are going through the same thing as you in the industry so as ask yourself what sounds better one-on-one training or Group Training there's no right or wrong answer so it's important to look at reviews when it comes to choosing the right trainer for you Google can be really helpful there's lots of Google reviews out there so sometimes there's good ones and sometimes there's bad ones and I think that you should really take a close look at both of those so with the good reviews take a look at what people are praising what they enjoyed about this course and with the negative reviews take a look at what people are critiquing what's missing in that curriculum both of those together should help in making a decision I don't know about you but when I'm looking at reviews and I see five stars across the board and nothing negative I almost am like hmm what's going on here there's always going to be someone with a critique and there's always room for improvement so take that into consideration when you're reading through these reviews alright so after reviews and this is in no particular order another thing to consider is who you're learning from right so if you're going to a website and you're seeing this beautiful fancy website that sucks you in and draws you in and the marketing The Branding is like on point it really doesn't matter what matters is who you're learning from the individual that is teaching you so you want to analyze and assess their work their fresh work what did their brows look like their before and after pictures what does the healed work look like because that is really important I'm telling you guys it's very easy to post a very pretty before and after everything looks so great when it's fresh but how does it Age and what does it look like years down the road those are things to consider now let's dive into curriculum so if you're looking for a trainer and you're on their website chances are they should have a breakdown of what you're going to be learning what they're promising to teach you so with the curriculum you're looking for things like skin Theory safety and sanitation and then of course technique if they're not breaking down their curriculum really clearly feel free to ask them for it and if they're not willing to share that on to the next so another tip is I know if you're thinking about getting into this industry and there's so many options with lips liner microblading machine brows Nano hair Strokes powder brows can be overwhelming if you learn it all at once so a tip for me is section them off into smaller bite-sized pieces perfect one skill learn one skill get good at it build your confidence in it and then learn the next one there are some academies out there that will train an all-encompass pmu course and it gives you like a taste a taste test of each service but it can be very overwhelming for the students so I always recommend focusing on one my micro topic say microblading getting that under your belt feeling confident and comfortable with it before jumping into machine brows and then jumping into lips and then jumping into eyeliner and on and on and on so one of the biggest things to consider when choosing an instructor for you is support and ongoing support is your instructor going to be right there with you for two days and then set you free into the world of pmu to be left alone and scared or are they going to offer you some ongoing support ongoing support could be a Facebook support group where you can be in touch with your instructor it could be through email maybe there are Zoom meetings where you get to catch up and go over any issues that you've been having since training or are they offering no support at all these are things to consider because I promise you you're going to have more questions when you leave that training and you start working on clients then before you went into the training altogether so having an open line of communication with your instructor however long that might be you should really get that clear be beforehand so you know what to expect so now that we've gone over some key things to look for when trying to find the right trainer for you let's talk about the truths of this industry I've been doing this for a long time so I can tell you all of the nitty gritty and the truth is yes you can make a lot of money in this industry more than you can probably imagine are you gonna make it overnight is it going to take a lot of hard work even after over a decade in this industry I am still perfecting my skills I'm still practicing every single week I'm still challenging myself with new clients and case studies that come through the door you never stop learning in this industry so if you've got the drive if you are committed to getting better because yes these two-day courses are going to teach you the basics they're going to get you started but it's what you do with those skills afterwards how much time you put into it the effort in building your clientele and the commitment to being in it for the long run those are all things that are really important to consider before jumping into this industry a lot of students will take courses because they think it's going to be easy it's not always easy if it was easy everyone would do it but it's worth it if you put in that hard work and you are dedicated and you can be very successful in this industry and you can have fun I wake up every morning and I pinch myself and I mean this truthfully from the bottom of my heart I can't believe that I get to do this and make money at the same time I always say this life is so short and if you are working so much and you're not working at something that you love so much of your life is being wasted so like I mentioned with these courses you're going to have a lot of questions afterwards and you're going to feel lost and if you don't have a good support system in place it can be overwhelming and that's where I come into the mix so after you've taken your training and you were feeling a little lost and you're feeling a little discouraged and you're not getting the results that you were expecting to get I promise I'm here I'm like your pmu Fairy Godmother I answer every single DM that comes through on our Instagram and trust me it's a lot and it can be overwhelming but I have help so we're lucky we get back to everyone we answer your questions we can guide you in the right direction with online training we've got amazing tutorials if you guys are even curious about pmu and you're not ready to jump into a course and get started maybe you want to just check out some of our tutorials we've got full videos of client appointments from start to finish they're like 39 USD it's very affordable but it gives you a closer look into what a procedure looks like and if it's something that might interest you before committing to taking a course so let's recap those six key points that you need to consider when choosing an instructor in this industry so we've got location and if you're willing to travel for the right instructor how long is that course is it two days is it two weeks is it two months the curriculum and what you're going to be learning in that time span Google reviews so what people have to say good bad or otherwise with these instructors and what their healed work looks like remember heel work is so important and last but not least ongoing support so what do they promise to deliver to you after that training when it comes to support and guidance so keep all of these in mind when trying to choose the right instructor for you and if you guys have
