hi everyone if you want to know how to backup your Windows 10 PC to an external hard drive then stay tuned so in this video we're going to look at how to backup your Windows 10 PC to an external hard drive now there's several different ways you can backup your PC you can use a cloud backup or you can buy some bespoke software like a Cronus for your PC but also Microsoft includes some inbuilt backup software within Windows 10 and that's what I'm gonna show you how to use today so if you look at my image this is what I've got at the moment I've got a an external hard drive I think it's 250 gig just plugged into the front of my computer what I'm now gonna do is go to start settings and update and security within there I'm going to go to the backup tab here and what we're gonna do is add a drive now the PC will now search for any drives that are plugged in that can be used for backup and as you can see it's found my external hard drive here so I'm gonna click on that now the screen changes to this so the first thing I'm going to do is look at more options so the first thing to look at here is the overview and it says that our data has not yet been backed up and we've got an option to backup now if we want but I'm just going to concentrate on these two boxes here the default is to backup your files every hour now that might be a little bit overkill for most pcs but you can backup every hour if your line you can backup daily you can backup every 10 minutes my recommendation is perhaps daily but again it's up to you in your circumstances this second section is how long to keep your backups for the default is forever you are going to be limited to how big your external hard is so if you just want a backup of your data in case your house our office burns down then you know you can select one month that if you've got a business and you've got compliance and you need to keep data then you need to buy a big hard drive and select forever or even what are two years at the bottom the folders that I'm gonna be backed up and you'll see my profile is just called added bit on this PC so it's backing up all my downloads I'm a favorite so I'm a desktop all my documents my pictures my camera roll my videos is backing up pretty much everything the one recommendation I will give here is the onedrive if you are using onedrive I wouldn't include that in the backup because the nature of onedrive is its cloud-based storage so you don't need to duplicate the back of there so we'll click on remove on there and then at the bottom you can exclude some folders now you might want to exclude a folder it might be an application you might not need it backed up for whatever reason you can go in there and you can browse to any folder that exits cluded from back up a little bit that like onedrive what I've done there so once you're happy with your settings you can either wait until the next backup interval which if you've set it that will be in the next hour or you can manually click backup now and the backup will start and that's how to backup your Windows 10 PC to an external hard drive and if you've got any problems with Windows 10 are you struggling with any information then please contact us we'll be happy to help
