how to assemble deck railings deck railings come in a variety of attractive styles and help to add the finishing touches to a raised deck if your deck isn't at ground level then you should always add railings to make sure that your deck is a safe place for you to relax all year round you'll find the full list of tools and materials you'll need at the end of this video we're going to be adding modern decking railings to our raised deck bear in mind that the maximum deck height for this type of railing is 600 millimeters so if your deck is any higher you'll require a different railing design let's start with the deck posts which are the supporting pillars of the handrails you can cut deck posts to whatever size you like as long as the handrails can attach to them at least 900 millimeters from the deck to make this part of the project much easier you can buy your posts pre notched if you need to extend your knot further then you can do this using a handsaw or circular saw don't forget to treat all cut surfaces and holes with the preserver generally two coats are recommended next drill pilot holes before fixing the deck posts to the bearer using two 130 millimeter exterior coach bolts per post then tighten with a socket set make sure they are evenly spaced with a maximum spacing of 1,800 millimeters between them if like us you need to notch a post into the decking to keep it flush start by measuring and marking both the top of the deck and the fascia where the post will be remove the fascia and using a handsaw sawed off the section you've marked out next use a jigsaw to remove the top section [Music] put the post into position and check that it's flush to the decking then secure the post as before and reattach the fascia before you assemble the railing measure the gap between the post so you can cut the top and bottom rails to fit between them [Music] next measure 81 millimeters from the end of the top rail and marker line this line will be where you place your first spindle a good tip for making sure spindles are evenly spaced is to measure and cut a piece of spindle for 81 millimeters and use this as a marker mark the center mark on each spindle as this is where you'll drill your pilot holes then turn the 81 millimeter section on its side and continue to mark along the length of the railing if like us you have cut your handrail down then you may need to adjust these measurements slightly however make sure all spacings are equal and do not exceed 82 millimeters before fixing for the bottom rail you'll need to repeat the above with the addition of drilling a three millimeter pilot hole through each mark now we need to attach the spindles to the bottom rail using seventy six millimeter deck screws to attach the top rail to the spindle use a sixty four millimeter galvanized finished nail but take care not to damage the wood whilst hammering alternatively you could use a nail punch to finish the nails now your railing is complete place the long side of the l-bracket centrally into the Philips slot underside of the bottom rail check the L brackets do not stick out past the end of the rail before fixing the bracket to the bottom rail using the two 25 millimeter screws that are supplied in the kit mark on your deck post where you want the top railing to be making sure it's at least 900 millimeters from the deck centrally place the short side of the L bracket onto the mark and fix the bracket to each deck post using two 25 millimeter screws place the railing assembly on the fixed post L bracket and secure to the underside of the top rail using two 25 millimeter screws centrally locate the bottom rail on the deck post before fixing the bottom rail L bracket using two 25 millimeter screws on each side of the top and bottom rails measure 25 millimeters from the end of the rail and marks then drill a countersunk three millimeter pilot hole approximately thirty degrees through the rails and into the post finally use two fifty millimeter screws to secure rails to post congratulations your raised deck is now safe and ready to be enjoyed [Music] here is the list of tools you'll need to assemble your railings and here is the materials you'll use [Music] and this is the recommended safety equipment needed you
