How to animate a map route with After Effects

hello and welcome to this two-minute tutorial on how to add a me at the route on a map showing the progress of a route can be more engaging and effective than showing simply a static map particularly for travel videos this is something that you can do quickly and easily and after effects and use to enhance your premiere projects so let's jump into After Effects and let me show you how to do this we start by creating a new composition in After Effects you can do this by pressing ctrl n on Windows or command n on Mac I'll simply call this composition map root I've used a standard HD profile for this and I'll set the duration to 5 seconds just click OK and we have a new composition open in the timeline so first of all we need a map I'll just drag a map that I've already prepared straight onto the timeline I'm going to press f2 to deselect that map because we want to draw the route on a separate layer I'm going to use the pen tool to draw the route so I just click on the pen tool and we can check that we have no fill set for this and that we have the stroke set to solid color you can change the color of the stroke if you wish but I'm happy with the red that's already selected just starting outside of the map area we can draw points along the route as required to create the the line that will indicate the route if something's not perfectly right you can always move the points around afterwards in another tutorial I will show you how you can make curves from the root in order to have it follow the road in a closer way we have the route done I'll press f2 again just to deselect the layer to add animation we use the expand option and you'll see here that there's an add button that shows up that allows you to add a special effect to this layer on the timeline the effect that we are going to add is called trim paths so I'll select the endpoint I'm just going to set that to zero which means that the route will start off being of zero length I'm clicking on the stopwatch in order to anomie at that particular parameter of the trim path and I'm going to move on the timeline to about four seconds we can then bring the endpoint up to a hundred percent and the read will animate from zero through to a hundred percent over those four seconds that's all that we need to do and we have the animated route I'll just click on home to go to the start and press space to play and you'll see that the route has been animated in the way that we wished there are some refinements that we could add to this such as putting the curves into the road or controlling the speed of the of the animation in order to make it look more natural but basically it's done and we can export the composition if you enjoyed this short tutorial then please subscribe here and hit the bell so that you'll be notified of new videos as they are uploaded I'll be posting a new tutorial each week so you'll build up your skills in Photoshop Lightroom After Effects and Premiere thanks for joining me I'll see you next time
