hi this is sterling with mark marine on this week's episode we're finally going to be talking about how to make that carburetor adjustment for your mercury 2 stroke outboard this is going to be the same for any motor from 6 horsepower to 15 horsepower although it's going to be pretty similar to some of the larger motors the 20 the 25 so you may be able to also use this video to make those adjustments so stay tuned and we're going to show you how it's done [Music] okay so for today the only tools you're going to need is a flathead screwdriver and a phillips head screwdriver um for the very first step is what we're going to want to do is go to our idle adjustment here and we're going to turn it all the way counterclockwise make sure it's pushed in and you want to make sure all this is going all the way back so make sure you press on this and this and make sure they're making the contact all the way back next we're going to adjust this cam here so you're going to want to loosen this screw until this cam is barely making contact with this so this white plastic barely making contact with the black plastic once you get that you want to turn it a half to a full turn in so it does give it a little bit of throttle uh for when you're cranking the motor do note some of these older motors you can't really follow mercury specs sometimes you might have to give it a couple more turns to actually give it enough throttle to crank up and once you get it running you can really adjust this idle down a little bit so go ahead and do that after that the next thing you're going to want to do is go to this fuel mixture screw on the front let me readjust the camera okay so next you're going to want to adjust this fuel mixture screw here on the front is what you're going to do is you're going to take your flat tip screwdriver and you're going to turn this clockwise until it barely touches do not over tighten this you can really damage your carburetor doing that so just screw it in until it touches and then is what you're going to do is you're going to screw it out so counterclockwise a screw and a half so one and a half turns back out that's going to be your starting point for adjusting your carburetor so after you do all that we're going to turn uh your idle adjustment all the way back to the right we're gonna pull it out make sure your motor is in neutral and then we're gonna crank the motor up once the motor cranks up you should be able to uh turn your choke off and it should run whether it's running good or not that's another story because we got to still adjust the carburetor if you can't get it to crank um make sure uh just screw this in just a little bit more for your throttle sometimes it just needs a little bit more throttle to crank up so give that a go also before you crank it when you plug in uh your gas hose and prime it up make sure it's holding prime and make sure you don't have gas coming out of the carburetor or any of these gaskets from you just cleaning the carburetor if uh you got gas coming out of somewhere you're gonna have to pull the carburetor off again and figure out what's going on whether you get a leaking gasket or stuck float or something like that uh but anyway like i said counterclockwise choke it crank it up uh let it run for 10 15 minutes before you even think about making the carburetor adjustment and this is the big deal make sure you have a thermostat in your motor there's so many people that think oh i don't need to run a thermostat nobody i'll talk to everybody they know no one runs a thermostat well they don't know what they're doing the motor needs to have a thermostat or it's never going to warm up to the proper temperature and adjusting your carburetor you can get some signs of issues and stuff when the motor's not actually warmed up all the way so make sure you get a thermostat in there make sure it works and uh let it warm up okay so now that you got the motor warmed up you want to go to your idle adjustment and you want to go all the way down to the slow speed so all the way counterclockwise make sure it's pushed in these should go back let me get a better adjustment sorry filming with my cell phone today my camera decided to die but anyway yeah make sure this is going all the way back sometimes they stick rub you just got to figure out what's going on there you just kind of got to look at it and see if it's rubbing or something make sure that's going back when you go back to the slow adjustment now that we've done that and the motor is warmed up we're going to start turning this fuel mixture screw counterclockwise very slowly once the motor starts running rough seems like it's going to die you're going to get misfires all that you're going to slowly start turning it to the right clockwise again until the motor starts running nice and even and smoothly that means that's about where you want your carburetor adjusted there's no real science to this you just kind of have to get it where the motor is running good again um if you go too far clockwise your motor is going to start running lean and usually you're going to start getting backfires under water well i'll say underwater i run mine in a trash can a lot filled up with water so you're not going to actually hear the kapow um but you're gonna see the motor uh just stutter and uh shake like uh it's basically you're gonna get a backfire boom boom um if it does that it usually happens every 30 seconds to a minute or so if you if you got that happening make sure to richen it back up so riching it back up is just counterclockwise with a screw really slow adjustments if you turn it really quick you can't really tell what's going on um sorry i hope everybody can follow this i don't actually have a motor that needs a carburetor adjustment right now and i really hate to mess with one that's working correctly so uh pretty much once you uh do all that you're good to go you just want the motor to run nice and smooth or as smooth as it can these motors are getting older so sometimes some of them just run rough uh you can try to lower your idle speed after you get everything uh adjusted correctly down to a proper idle speed the motor should not be wrapped way up uh at idle speed um so make sure you just kind of you just kind of gotta listen to it uh that just sounds like a idling you know two stroke outboard but i hope this helps guys uh sorry again like i said i don't have a motor that actually needs a carburetor adjustment right now and honestly even if i filmed one running uh it's hard to tell over the audio of a camera what's really going on so the best thing i can do really is just explain to you how it's done if y'all have any issues comment below find me on facebook shoot me a message i'll try to help you as much as possible um we're going to talk about the i or not the idle speeds are the timing adjustment on the motors as well i'm going to wait till the next video to do that you've got to have a timing light to do this so if you don't have a timing light go on amazon whatever buy you a timing light you don't need to buy a super expensive one the only thing i would say is probably buy a battery powered one a lot of timing lights have two alligator clips that are made to go on a car battery to check the timing and with a lot of these motors being manual start you don't have a battery just laying around so one that just takes a couple d batteries or whatever is probably the best way to go but we'll talk about that on the next video usually the timing is not really out on these motors too bad unless someone is like severely screwed with it and just so you know where your timing adjustments are this screw here is uh your idle adjustment timing or your idle timing and then this one here is your max timing a lot of times you're going to see this plastic piece broken off here with the screw missing because what happens is people tighten this screw with the nut still tightened on it and it breaks the plastic uh the big thing is is you can't replace that plastic part without buying a whole new carburetor i don't think it's totally necessary to go buy you a new carburetor all right guys i want to thank y'all for watching this week's episode of martin marine and don't forget to hit that like and subscribe button i'll see y'all guys next time [Music] you
