you got to have expectations on what's right with these trucks what's not right with these [Music] [Music] trucks hey everybody it's James Casey turbos today we're going to talk about Towing turbos RPM the whole night we get assist every single day a lot of people don't understand how to tow with diesels a lot of people come from gassers trucks or they've never paid attention or it's your first diesel how do you drive how do you tow we get this question asked and it's kind of expectations a lot of people think that it's get up Mash a metal go up the mountain there are things we look for and to do right now we're in Arizona it's 105° Plus in the middle of summertime I'm in a 2012 67 diesel with a stroker pump or modified cp4 with our stage 2 turbo this ideally is more of a street setup but I have expectations I know what I'm doing and what to expect out of this truck and how she should tow um forgive the noise in the background work going up some of our mountains here which we have some very large steep percentage grade mountains here in Arizona some of the biggest in the country actually and we have the heat so we have basically the perfect Achilles heel to hurt these trucks if you're not careful so it's why it's very crucial uh we are very heavy and a 45- ft toy hauler with razors I never have issues Towing as long as you know how to drive it the magic number we always talk about is 1350 that's when things like to get hot that's where you don't like to sustain you're going to hit 13 14500 on passes drag racing all those things it's not what we're looking for we don't want to hold longer then 5 10 seconds Max at 1300° right now 1350s pushing it 13's when I start backing out of it if you look we got GoPros on the edge right here with color red lines and alerts to say here's my warning Zone here's the Red Zone it's kind of self-explanatory you can see right now we're getting towards that 1300 threshold the truck just downshifted from fifth to fourth gear I got RPMs running higher and notice that egts are going back down and right now looks like we're maintaining 1100 plus under 1200° climbing Mount or so I'm fourth gear 2100 RPM 50 mph I'm slowing down a little bit but if you don't back out of it that's where the issues arise you got to back out of it a little bit but we're still maintaining the speed limit going up a hill faster than semis so we're halfway up the hill right now I'm getting a little Smokey but I just dropped down to third gear because we were smoking out the car behind us which is going to do in the hot tune this load elevation uh but we dro the third gear now we're 24 2500 rpm it's nice and clean we're chugging along almost 1200° we're just cruising up right now you know 45 mph cruising up a hill the key is you got to maintain RPM and speed if you get under the turbo like we are coming up on but we're almost to the top it's a struggle remember you don't have to do 100 mph Towing you don't want to do 75 is pushing it tires fuel mileage there's a lot of things that come into play for that everybody wants to go fast for towing you should not so holding 40 50 60 MPH up big Hills it's all you need this is the hard part for people is you got to make a gap to get around people or you're going to be stuck behind them lugging the motor smoking out everybody it's not going to work well you got to you can't let other people hold you up and get under the turbos so I'm in manual mode that's the beauty of a 67 and I'm holding second gear 35 mph 28 2700 RPM you touch, 1500 for a second it doesn't melt it down to butter it doesn't work that way you just don't want to hold it there for a long period of Time 5 Seconds 10 seconds you don't want to be pulling that hill, 1400° plus and not backing out of it then you're going to end up with the hole in your piston so another rule of things uh you can see right now shifting in the manual mode on the dash all the gears backr anytime you hook up to a trailer of any size anything above 10,000 lb big trailers click out on the plus arrow down and there's a plus and a negative arrow on your shifter click it down it's going to drop six gear out of it so now there's no longer six gear you don't need that if you're towing now there is an exception with 450s 350s dueles that are geared that allows you to run that double overdrive while Towing because you're geared right most F250 single whe wheel trucks daily driver trucks you know 35s and stuff this truck has 35s on it with 355 gears you don't need it you can't it just doesn't work you'll just smoke it out get high egts the load your truck can't handle it a lot of people think you just floor it mash it no we're driving by the gauges getting yourself an edge cts3 or running an easy link with the right probes is the best thing you can always do for these trucks you drive diesels by gauges you do nothing else speed limit anything else you back out of it when needed you do everything you need [Music] [Music] he
