How The Chiefs Went From Disaster To Dynasty

the Kansas City Chiefs used to be losers and a perennial high draft pick team but now they're a dynasty and the most stable franchise in the NFL here's their franchise history and how they turn Rags into riches the Kansas City Chiefs are one of the oldest teams in NFL history starting off in the AFL and then joining the NFL during the merger they weren't always the Chiefs however from 1960 to 1962 they were known as the Dallas Texans before team owner Lamar hun agreed to relocate the team to Kansas City and 1963 the brand new Kansas City Chiefs would become one of the strongest teams in the AHL winning the most AFL championships of all time with three in 1966 after defeating the Buffalo Bills in the AFL Championship Kansas City was invited to play the winner of the NFL championship game the Green Bay Packers in the first ever AFL NFL Championship Game this would later be recognized as the first ever Super Bowl a game in which they lost 35 to10 3 years later they would once again be AFL Champions and would once again be invited to play in the inter league championship game this time they would match up against the Minnesota Vikings and see a different outcome the Chiefs would win what we now know as Super Bowl 4 in a 23 to7 beating the next year the AFL and the NFL would officially merge and the Chiefs would be placed in the AFC West despite their perennial success in the AFL the Chiefs struggled greatly in the NFL from 1970 to 1990 they made only two playoff appearances and made countless poor decisions that altered their franchise as a whole in 1980 head coach Marv Levy would cut future Hall of Fame kicker Jon stoy who later became the most accurate kicker in NFL history in favor of signing Nick Lowry and unknown three years later the Chiefs would have the chance to draft a Hall of Fame quarterback in either Jim Kelly or Dan Marino instead they would take Todd blackl man who would only throw 29 touchdowns in the NFL their lack of success continued until the hiring of both general manager Carl Peterson and head coach Marty Schottenheimer in 1988 and 1989 Peterson would draft two defensive anchors in the first round of the NFL draft Neil Smith in 1988 and Derek Thomas in 1989 these two would lead a talented Chiefs defense that would ultimately carry them to the postseason for six straight years from 1990 to 1995 but could never find any real success come January in 1997 the Chiefs had a ton of Hope despite injuries the starting quarterback Elvis gerbach because backup quarterback Rich Ganon would lead them to a 13 and3 season but Marty Schottenheimer decided to start gerbach in their lone playoff game despite ganon's regular season success and on the back of poor play from gerbach the Chiefs would fall to the Denver Broncos 14 to10 Ganon would sign with the division rival Oakland Raiders after this funny enough Ganon won NFL MVP in 2002 at the start of the Millennium the Chiefs where the definition of average in 2000 the team would go seven and nine which wasn't good enough to make the playoffs but it was too good for them to have a high draft pick they were stuck and Peterson decided that it was time for a change following the 2000 season new head coach Gunther Cunningham was fired and former Super Bowl winning coach dick verm would be given the keys to the franchise just one season prior as the head coach of the St Louis Rams in 1999 verm alongside MVP quarterback CT Warner LED St Louis to a 23-6 victory in Super Bowl 34 over the Tennessee Titans and would actually retire following the victory after Peterson would convince vermil to come out of retirement and coach of chiefs this would only be the first of multiple major moves Peterson would make this off season following the hire of vermil he would trade their first round pick that year to the Rams for quarterback Trent green not only that Peterson and vermil also signed free agent running back priest homes to a multi-year contract solidifying Kansas City's backfield of the future the Chiefs had a very defensive cetric game plan over the years so hiring verile and the backfield moves solidified a new era of Chiefs football unfortunately for verm and the Chiefs they would have a very underwhelming 2001 going 6 and 10 despite priest Holmes breaking out and rushing for a league leading 1555 yards and eight touchdowns Trent green would throw a league leading 24 interceptions 202 would be rough but 2003 would show a glimpse of Hope for the Chiefs they would start the season with nine con consecutive wins the most in franchise history but would yet again fail to find postseason success that Trend continued for the next decade despite playoff births in 2006 and 2010 the Chiefs never found any real Hope come January following the 2012 season when the Chiefs finished 2 and 14 and secured the first pick in the draft it was obvious that something major was due that major change would come in their head coaching vacancy after firing one-year head coach Romeo crenell the chief hired former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid to try to lead this team to some success the Chiefs would also trade for 49ers quarterback Alex Smith and drafted offensive tackle Eric fiser with that first pick in that same draft the Chiefs selected tight end Travis Kelce in the third round and the Andy Reid era was officially underway and what a start it would be they started the season 9 and0 before finishing the season 11 and five but their lack of playoff success would linger after leading the Indianapolis Colts 38 to 10 in the Wild Card round things were looking up but second-year quarterback Andrew Luck led a historic comeback defeating the Chiefs 45 to 44 despite this things had started to look up in Kansas City the next few seasons were the same they finished just above 500 every year but could never find any success in the playoffs in 2016 general manager Ken dorsy made a few key draft picks in the second round dorsy took defensive tackle Chris Jones followed by wide receiver Tyreek Hill in the sixth round the Chiefs finished the 2016 season with a first round Buy in the playoffs but ultimately lost to Big Ben and the Steelers this team seemed cursed whenever it was time for a big game however something changed in 2017 after that loss to Pittsburgh general manager John dorsy was let go and Brett V would be promoted but before this dorsy would have his last ever draft where with his final ever first round pick he would select Texas Tech quarterback Patrick Mahomes this was the single best thing dorsy could have done for the Chiefs Alex Smith continued to start in 2017 and after a wild card loss it was officially Patrick Mahomes time in the Kid's first ever season as a starter in the NFL Mahomes would throw for 5,097 yards and 50 touchdowns being named both the NFL MVP and offensive player of the year they found something special momes alongside Superstar pass catchers Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill would make it all the way to the AFC Championship Game the first time Kansas City had been that far in 25 years before falling just short to Tom Brady and the Patriots due to a questionable offside call this immediate playoff success gave Chiefs fans a ton of optimism and The Following season that would continue momes continued his dominance solidifying him as one of the best quarterbacks in the world and the Chiefs would make it all the way to Super Bowl 54 in a game against Jimmy Garoppolo in the 49ers which Kansas City would win in just two years Patrick Mahomes alongside and Reed and Brett V led the Chiefs to a Super Bowl victory and this was only the beginning after his Super Bowl MVP performance the Chiefs signed Patrick Mahomes to a record extension worth half a billion dollars over 10 years Kansas City's hero was here to stay Mahomes and the Chiefs would once again make the Super Bowl in 2021 but unfortunately fell short to Tom Brady and the Buccaneers in a 31-9 loss despite momes playing outstanding football going into the 2021 2022 season the Chiefs would look to make their third straight Super Bowl but Joe burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals had something to say about that defeating the Chiefs 27 to 24 in the AFC Championship Game to shatter the Chiefs Kingdom's hopes all seem lost for some going into the 2022 season fans were wondering if their ring in 2020 would be their only ring under Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid on top of that Superstar receiver Tyreek Hill would be traded to the Miami Dolphins putting a ton of pressure on momes as many questioned if he could succeed without his favorite Target well he didn't just succeed he shattered expectations winning NFL MVP and ultimately Super Bowl MVP in the same season as he and the Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 on a last second game-winning field goal by Harrison bucker momes became the first player to win both MVP and Super Bowl MVP in the same season since CT Warner did it in 1999 but momes Reed and the Chiefs wouldn't stop there in 2023 the chief Chiefs would actually go into the playoffs with some doubt surrounding them still they put that doubt to bed real quick defeating Josh Allen and the bills in the divisional round followed by MVP Lamar Jackson and the top- seated Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship making it to their fourth Super Bowl in 5 years they ran into Brock pie in the San Francisco 49ers a rematch from four years ago and the result would be no different Mahomes would throw together his third Super Bowl MVP performance as the Chiefs defeated the ners in over time 25-22 making the Chiefs the first team to win back-to-back Super Bowl since the New England Patriots in 2003 and 204 these rings have solidified Andy Reid as one of the greatest head coaches ever Patrick Mahomes as one of the greatest quarterbacks ever and Brett V is one of the greatest GMS ever it's only been six seasons three rings and six let alone five seasons is unheard of and may never happen again in our lifetime the crazy thing is it looks as if the Chiefs are just getting started that's it what is your favorite
