This is probably off topic but it isn't a good sign for the platform that even his videos (purely educational content) fall victim to the censorship bot that YouTube has.
I’m learning Mandarin and have a pretty shallow understanding of how Cantonese works, so this was enlightening!
Those Cantonese tones in graph form look terrifying though... how on earth could you keep track of all those subtle inflections... 🤯 Then again I’m currently in Vietnam learning a bit of Vietnamese, and my knowledge of Mandarin tones has made a world of difference in picking up the six Vietnamese tones. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad.
Side note: I also feel like my singing in the shower has dramatically improved since being exposed to a tonal language haha.
I'm a native Cantonese speaker but I speak pretty decent Mandarin, thanks to my relatives on my father's side mostly being Mandarin speakers. I also live in a city where there's plenty of speakers of both languages (Vancouver), and in general I've noticed that Cantonese speakers tend to pick up Mandarin more readily than the other way around. Does anyone know why this might be the case? Is it simply because Mandarin is a language used across China whereas Cantonese is largely confined to its region and to the overseas communities?
