칼부림과 같은 강력 범죄와 모방 범죄들이 on the knife incidents and all the copycat crimes.
상당히 많이 보도되고 있습니다. So in this video I asked many foreigners
그래서 이번 영상에서는 여러 외국인들에게 from all around the world how safe they feel in South Korea in 2023.
2023년 한국은 얼마나 안전하게 느껴지는지를 물어보았는데요 After that, I will show you an interview I did
그와 함께 한국 현직 경찰관분과 나눈 with a South Korean police officer on his experience
실제 경험담과 2023년 한국은 어느 정도 안전한지, and how safe he thinks Korea is in 2023 compared to years past.
지난 몇 년 동안 변화가 있었는지에 대한 인터뷰 또한 준비되어 있습니다 Without further ado, let's begin.

저는 보스턴에서 왔어요 How safe do you feel in Korea, 2023?
2023년 한국은 얼마나 안전하다고 느끼시나요? I would say pretty safe.
저는 꽤 안전하다고 생각해요. Okay.
그렇군요 Definitely more safe than America, definitely more safe than Brazil, actually.
미국보다는 확실히 더 안전하다고 생각해요. 브라질보다도 확실히 더 안전하죠 Of course, it's not the best kind of news here
물론 칼부림 사건에 관한 뉴스가 about the knife stabbing incidents.
여기저기 나오고 있지만요 So I feel for the victims, but at the same time
피해자들을 생각하면 마음이 아프지만, I, myself, do not feel more dangerous being here.
그렇다고 한국이 더 위험해졌다고는 느끼지 않아요 I love New York City,
저는 뉴욕이 정말 좋아요 so I'm not repping New York City like in a bad way. But-
뉴욕을 정말 좋아하고 나쁘게 말하려는 건 아니지만.. But?
하지만~? But we do have a lot going on in the subways and stuff.
하지만 지하철이나 그런 데서 일어나는 일들이 정말 많아요 Crime's a lot.
범죄들이 많이 일어나죠 Violence, acts of violence so.
폭력 행위들이요 Yeah.
네 Being from there, like here, the like likelihood
그래서 저는 범죄가 많이 일어나는 뉴욕에서 왔으니까 of something happening to me right now
한국에서는 밤에 in this moment is a lot smaller than if I was walking back home
집으로 돌아갈 때 무슨 일이 일어날 가능성이 at night in like New York City, like coming home.
뉴욕에서보다 훨씬 적다고 느껴져요 I feel pretty safe.
꽤 안전하다고 생각해요 And I think a large part of that is that there's a lot
그렇게 느끼는 가장 큰 이유는 거의 모든 곳에 카메라가 of cameras pretty much everywhere.
많이 있다는 점 때문인 것 같아요 And that's not really a thing in the Netherlands, right?
네덜란드는 그렇지 않거든요 So in the Netherlands it feels like if you go
네덜란드에서는 어두운 골목길로 들어가면 into some dark alley, you might get jumped.
습격을 당할 수도 있겠다는 느낌이 드는데 But here it doesn't give that same vibe to me, at least.
여기서는 적어도 저는 그런 느낌을 받지 않아요 Despite the news.
아무리 요즘 흉흉하다고 해도요 Yeah. Despite the news.
네, 뉴스를 봤어도 불구하고요 I've read the news and I've heard about it through other fellow students.
뉴스도 읽었고 다른 학생들을 통해서도 그 소식을 들었지만요 So I've been here two months
제가 여기 와서 두 달 동안 느낀 건데 and just personally I feel like in the US, right?
개인적으로 미국에서는 캣콜링이라는게 많았지만 Like we get cat called.
한국에서는 좀 다르게 주목받아요 Yeah.
네 But I think one, just the overall like clothing,
일단, 전체적으로 옷 차림 같은 건 you have to dress more conservative.
더 보수적으로 입어야 하는 것 같고요 I feel really uncomfortable, like showing more skin.
여기서는 노출이 있는 옷차림을 하면 정말 불편해요 I don't know if it's because in the US I'm used to it
미국에 익숙해서 그런지는 모르겠지만 but here I feel like people like look at me
여기서는 제가 외국인이라서 더 주목받는 거 같고 'cause I'm a foreigner and then they look at what I'm wearing.
사람들이 제가 뭘 입었는지를 쳐다보는 거 같아요 And I've gotten a lot of like bad looks from maybe like older people.
그리고 나이 많은 분들에게서도 안 좋은 시선을 많이 받았어요 But again, I don't wanna generalize because it's
하지만 이걸 일반화하고 싶지는 않아요, like some people are super sweet and don't care.
어떤 분들은 정말로 친절하고 저를 별로 신경 쓰지 않는 사람들도 있거든요 Yeah.
네 So I don't know if it's like a cultural thing
그래서 이건 문화적인 차이일 수도 있지만, but I do feel like I already stand out as it is.
여기서는 그냥 외국인이라는 사실 자체만으로 눈에 띄는 존재인 것 같아요 Sure.
그렇죠 So I'm trying to do my best not to.
그래서 최대한 눈에 띄지 않으려고 해요 So I don't feel as safe as I would've thought.
그런 점 때문에 생각보다 안전하다고 느끼지 못하는 것 같아요 And again, it's not to say Korea is not safe
하지만 그게 한국이 안전하지 않다는 뜻은 아니에요 because there's a lot of places in the US I wouldn't feel comfortable
미국은 보스턴에서조차도 제가 마음 편하게 even in Boston walking down the street,
걷지 못하는 곳들이 많거든요 like you could get shot, things like that.
총에 맞는다든지 그런 일들이 걱정돼서요 Here, I don't think that happens, but I think like
하지만 여기서는 그런 걱정은 없죠 on the woman perspective and being a foreigner.
여성이자 외국인의 관점에서 볼 때 Yeah.
네 That is a very unique experience.
그렇게 느끼는 건 아주 특별한 경험이에요 And again, people are gonna say different things, so.
하지만 사람마다 의견은 다를 수 있어요 I'm from Japan, but I feel like
저는 일본에서 왔는데요, in terms of women's safety, Korea, South Korea is
여성의 안전 측면에서 보면 한국이 더 안전하게 느껴져요. more like feels safer because in Japan,
왜냐하면 일본에서는 가끔 기차 안에서 inside a train some people has no manner,
일부 몰상식한 사람들이 no education and touch people, women's body easily.
여성들의 몸을 함부로 쉽게 만지는 경우가 있거든요 So, yeah. Feel more safe.
그래서 한국이 더 안전하다고 느껴져요 I'm from Seattle, Washington.
저는 워싱턴주 시애틀에서 왔어요 I haven't been here very long
저는 여기 온 지 그리 오래되지 않았지만 but I probably feel safer here just by myself.
한국이 혼자 지내기에 더 안전한 것 같아요 But with the stabbings, I definitely have not been
아무래도 요즘 일어나는 칼부림 사건 때문에 like going out by myself as much.
혼자서는 나가지 않으려고 하는 편이지만 But I'm not super worried about it
그것 때문에 너무 걱정하지는 않아요. as that's like probably a more common thing to happen in Seattle.
시애틀에서는 그런 일이 더 흔하게 일어나거든요 Hi, I'm George and I'm from the UK, England, to be exact.
안녕하세요, 저는 조지이고 영국에서 왔어요, 정확히는 잉글랜드요 I've lived in Korea for about seven and a half years.
한국에 산 지는 7년 반 정도 되었네요 I think it's really shocking because career is it's a really safe country
칼부림 사건은 정말 충격적이에요, 한국은 정말 안전한 나라고 and this kind of thing doesn't often happen.
이런 일이 자주 일어나지 않는 곳이니까요 Also, one of these incidents occurred near my place
게다가 그 사건 중 하나가 저희 집 근처에서 일어나서 so that was really, really scary.
정말 정말 무서웠죠 I still feel quite safe because, you know,
하지만 저는 아직도 한국은 상당히 안전하다고 느껴요, 왜냐하면 아시다시피 if something is just reported a lot in the news,
뉴스에서 사건 얘기를 너무 자주 접하다보면 you kind of get a sense that it occurs more frequently than it actually does.
실제보다 더 자주 일어나는 것처럼 느껴지잖아요 Personally, I feel very safe especially compared to back home.
개인적으로는 특히 고향과 비교해서 한국은 아주 안전하게 느껴져요 I live in Brussels, a big city.
저는 브뤼셀에 살아요, 대도시이지만 Yeah.
네 I wouldn't go out at night, not even with a group of girlfriends.
저는 밤에 밖에 나가지 않아요 심지어 여자 친구들이 여러 명 있다 해도 나가지 않을 거예요 Really?
정말요? Really.
네, 정말 Why? Like what do you have to worry about?
왜요? 어떤 게 걱정되시나요? I constantly check if my phone and my wallet are still there.
항상 핸드폰랑 지갑이 잘 있는지 확인하고 다녀야 해요 Here I can just leave them on a table,
여기 한국에서는 그냥 테이블 위에 두고 come back 10 minutes later, they will be there.
10분 뒤에 돌아와도 그대로 있죠 Yeah, just worrying of being harassed really.
네, 벨기에에서는 밤에 무슨 일을 당할까 봐 걱정되는데 Here I have no worry of that at all.
여기서는 그런 걱정이 전혀 없어요 I think I feel a lot safer here walking around
한국에서는 돌아다니는 게 훨씬 더 안전하다고 느끼는 것 같아요 but also because there's so much people still hanging
밤에도 많은 사람들이 여전히 거리를 돌아다니고 있으니까요 out in the streets at night.
젊은 사람들, 나이 든 사람들, So much young people, older people, families
아니면 가족 단위로 나온 사람들이 많아서 that you you don't feel like you have to watch your back all the time.
항상 주위를 살피며 경계하고 있어야 할 필요가 없죠 Hey, how's it going? Where are you from?
안녕하세요, 어디서 오셨나요? The US. I haven't had any bad encounters at all.
미국에서 왔어요. 지금까지 제 경험으로는 나쁜 일은 전혀 없었어요 Yeah.
네 And I've been here a long time,
저는 한국에 온 지 오래됐고 so I've gone out and done a whole bunch of things.
지금까지 여러 다양한 경험을 했는데요 But yeah, I haven't had any bad encounters and I've felt pretty safe.
한 번도 나쁜 일을 겪은 적도 없었고, 꽤 안전하다고 느껴져요 I'm from France, this kind of accident with knife that'll always happen.
저는 프랑스에서 왔어요, 이런 칼에 관련된 사고는 언제 어디서든 항상 발생할 수 있어요 So I really feel more safety here.
그래서 별문제 없이 한국은 프랑스보다 더 안전하다고 생각해요 Like in the street, I really feel confident,
밖에서도 정말 안전하다고 느끼고요 even if I'm dressed like with a little skirt, I don't care.
짧은 치마를 입은 상태라도 걱정없이 다닐 수 있어요 Yeah, I feel really safe here.
네, 정말 안전하다고 느껴져요 I mean, walking around by yourself, like doing everything
혼자 거리를 돌아다니거나, 한밤중에 on your own in the middle of the night,
혼자서 뭘 하던지요 everyone's like being pretty friendly as well.
사람들도 다들 친절한 것 같아요 Like it's not intimidating.
전혀 위협적인 느낌이 들지 않죠 And I'd say the same in the UK in the city where I live
제가 살고 있는 영국의 도시도 꽤 안전하지만, but compared to like London, like another city
서울과 비슷한 크기의 다른 도시인 런던과 비교하면 of a similar size I'd say here feels much safer.
이곳이 훨씬 더 안전하다고 할 수 있어요 Yeah, do you think though that
네, 아무래도 다른 사람들보다 키가 크고 because you're a man and you're quite tall that- [ you feel safe? ]
남자라서 더 그렇게 느낄 수도 있겠죠? Oh, I for sure, for sure.
네, 그렇기도 하죠 In England? Well, it depends where you go.
영국에서요? 어디를 가느냐에 따라 다를 거예요 There are some areas where gangsters operate.
일부 지역은 갱스터들이 활동하는 곳도 있어서 So I wouldn't feel very safe.
거기서는 좀 걱정되겠죠 "Peaky Blinders."
"피키 블라인더스"처럼요 Yeah. Although I, well yeah, maybe they're still about, who knows.
네, 그런 사람들이 아직도 있을지는 모르겠지만요 Yeah, yeah, those kinds of areas I wouldn't feel very confident going to.
그런 동네에 가면 마음 편히 돌아다니기는 어려울 거예요 I mean, I was chased once even though I'm from the countryside.
그리고 저는 시골에서 살았는데도 나쁜 놈들한테 쫓긴 적이 있어요 So I got the train home and I was walking home
한 번은 집에 가려고 기차를 타고 역에 내려서 from the train station and I live in a very,
집으로 걸어가고 있는데, very small village and suddenly like a group
저는 아주 아주 작은 마을에서 살았거든요 of blokes just started chasing me, shouting expletives at me.
그런데 갑자기 몇몇 남자들이 저를 쫓아오면서 욕을 하는 거예요 And fortunately a guy just, well, I knew drove past and gave me a lift, so.
다행히도 때마침 아는 분이 차를 몰고 지나가다가 저를 발견하고는 태워다 주셨어요 I was saved.
저를 구해주셨죠 What were they angry at?
그 사람들은 뭐 때문에 화가 났던 거예요? I think it's 'cause I was wearing skinny jeans.
아마도 그때 제가 스키니 진을 입고 있어서 그랬던 것 같아요 Is that what, is that it?
그것 때문에요? Yeah.
네 No way.
무슨 그런 일이 Yeah. It seemed to upset them, so.
그러니까요, 그게 그 사람들 심기를 거슬렀나 봐요 Hey, what's up? I'm from Paraguay.
안녕하세요? 저는 파라과이에서 왔어요 How long have you been in Korea?
한국에 온 지 얼마나 됐나요? A little bit over four years now.
이제 4년 조금 넘었네요 I don't usually go out alone at night anymore.
저는 이제 밤에 혼자 밖에 나가지 않게 됐어요 I became a little bit, just a little bit more wary.
그냥 제 주위 환경에 대해 조금 더 Yeah
네 Of my surroundings.
조심스러워진 것 같아요 Especially 'cause I'm a woman,
특히 저는 여자니까 더 조심하게 돼요 but at the same time knowing where I come from,
하지만 동시에 제 고향을 생각해보면 it's still technically safe I would say.
엄밀히 말해서 한국은 여전히 안전하다고 할 수 있죠 Comparing to Korea I guess you could say the crime rate is way higher.
파라과이는 한국과 비교하면 범죄율이 훨씬 더 높거든요 Yeah sure.
네, 그렇죠 I mean, I can just walk around at night and not
여기서는 밤에 그냥 걸어다닐 수 있고 really have a worry about if someone's just gonna attack me.
누군가가 나를 공격할거라는 걱정을 별로 하지 않아도 돼요 'Cause in Brazil, you know, it's like kind of like,
왜냐면 브라질에서는 그러니까 일종의, it's like a unwritten curfew.
암묵적인 통금 시간 같은 게 있어요 If you're out past a certain hour,
특정 시간 이후에 외출하면 it's like you're a target to be robbed in America too.
도둑질을 당할 표적이 된 것 같은 기분이죠, Like, you know, you could be a victim of some sorts
미국도 마찬가지에요, 특히 도시에서는 한밤중에 especially if you're out in the streets in the middle of night in like a city.
밖에 나가 돌아다니게 되면 범죄의 피해자가 될 수 있어요 But I think here in Korea it's definitely a different vibe
하지만 여기 한국에서는 치안적인 면에서 with just the safety because, you know,
확실히 느낌이 달라요 왜냐하면 there's CCTV everywhere, there's just more police presence.
어디에나 CCTV가 다 설치되어 있고 경찰들도 많이 있는데 They're always patrolling.
항상 거리를 순찰하고 있는 걸 볼 수 있죠 And honestly the culture here, not a lot of people go out
그리고 솔직히 여기 문화에서는 거리에서 다른 사람을 of their way to just attack you out of nowhere.
그냥 난데없이 공격하려는 사람은 거의 없어요 And also like, they don't, there's not weapons
그리고 대놓고 총이나 칼 같은 on the streets, there's not guns, there's not knives.
무기를 들고 다니는 사람도요 They're really strict on all those things.
그런 것에 상당히 엄격한 나라에요 Yeah.
맞아요 And so I do feel more safe in Korea in 2023 than
그래서 2023년 한국은 여전히 안전하다고 생각해요 Despite all of the new news coming out of the violence and whatnot.
칼부림 사건이나 그런 범죄 관련된 뉴스가 계속 들려와도요? Yeah
네 Still feel safe.
여전히 안전하다고 느끼는 거죠 I still feel safe.
네 여전히 안전하다고 느껴요 Cool.
좋아요 Now you were saying you feel less safe dressing freely.
옷을 입고 싶은 대로 자유롭게 입으면 덜 안전하게 느낀다고 했었죠? Yeah.
맞아요 Here.
한국에서는요 Yeah.
네 Because you get unwanted attention.
왜냐하면 불필요한 관심을 받게 되니까 그런 거죠 Yeah. I almost-
네, 저는 거의.. Not necessarily catcalls, but just stares.
꼭 캣콜링 같은 건 아니어도 빤히 쳐다보니까요 Yeah, I get like looked at, I get walked,
맞아요, 사람들이 빤히 쳐다보기도 하고 어쩔 때는 like people follow me, again, on the campus.
저를 따라오기도 해요, 하지만 여기 캠퍼스에서는 .. Like I'm really lucky to have a really safe campus
전 정말 이렇게 안전한 서강대에 다니게 되어서 정말 행운이라고 생각해요 like Sogang, like this feels comfortable.
여기 있으면 마음이 편하거든요 Especially because there seems to be some already like level of respect
왜냐하면 여기서는 외국인들을 이미 어느 정도 동등하게 존중해 주는 느낌이 있는데 but especially like when I'm taking the subway in Hongdae
밖에서는 홍대에서 지하철을 타고 다닐 때나 and things like that, like I get looked at a lot a lot, a lot.
다른 여러 상황에서 사람들이 정말 정말 많이 쳐다봐요 That's interesting because it feels like Hongdae, Itaewon,
정말요? 흥미로운 대답이네요, 왜냐하면 홍대나 이태원 even Gangnam perhaps are quite international neighborhoods.
그리고 강남 같은 곳은 상당히 외국인들이 많은 곳이잖아요 So you still feel like that in Hongdae?
그런 곳에서도 여전히 사람들의 시선을 받는다는 거네요? Absolutely. Yeah.
그럼요, 네 Oh wow. Okay, okay, okay.
오 와우, 네 알겠습니다 Korea like in some sense when it comes to crimes is still like,
한국은 범죄와 관련해서 어떤 면에서는 I would say it's safer than my country.
제 고향보다 더 안전하지만 But then in some other ways it's like some new things
제가 전혀 생각지도 못했던 다른 면에서 that I never thought would be like a concern became one.
새롭게 문제 되고 있는 부분들이 있어요 Like for example, like stalking is kind of common here.
예를 들어 한국에서 스토킹은 흔한 일이에요 Like guys following you.
남자들이 쫓아오는 거죠 I've never experienced that back home.
고향에서는 그런 경험이 없었어요 Yeah.
네 And then I started to, well, when I came here
그러다가 한국에 온 후로부터는 I think that became a new thing for me to start to worry about.
지금까지 없던 스토킹 문제가 새로운 걱정거리가 됐죠 So it's happened to you?
그런 일이 있었어요? Yeah, it's happened to me multiple times.
네, 여러 번 있었어요 Of course like no country is ever free
당연히 어떤 나라도 범죄로부터 of crime even though like Korea is a super safe city.
완전히 자유로울 수는 없어요. 한국이 아무리 안전한 나라라고 해도 Of course there's gonna be incidents
어쩔 수 없이 칼부림이나 where like stabbings occur and different crimes occur.
다른 범죄 사건들이 발생할게 될 거예요 But at the same time, I think Korea does a really good job
하지만 그래도 한국은 시민들을 안전하게 지키는 데 of keeping everyone else safe.
아주 잘 하고 있다고 생각해요 Of course, like, you know, not all incidents can be stopped
물론 모든 범죄 사건을 막을 수는 없겠지만, but they do a really good job at making sure that nothing happens.
최대한 아무 일도 일어나지 않도록 잘 대처하고 있고 And so that everyone stays safe.
모두가 안전하게 지낼 수 있도록 노력하고 있어요 Cool.

미국은 고등학교에서 to having school shooting drills in high school in the US.
학교 총기 난사 범죄에 대한 대피 훈련을 하는 나라잖아요 Like I'm prepared in the US for anyone to come up
언제 어디서 누가 자동 소총을 가지고 나와서 with an automatic and shoot me in any public place.
공공장소에서 난사를 할지도 모르는 나라인 거죠 So as horrible as the knife incident is or I don't know much about it,
그래서 칼부림 사건이 아무리 끔찍해도, I feel like that is something that
얼마나 심했는지는 모르겠지만 in the US would not even make the news.
미국에서는 뉴스에 보도되지도 않을 것 같아요 Yeah, yeah, yeah, honestly.
네, 네 솔직히 그래요 And again, it's not, like I think it's great that something
하지만 한국에서 칼부림 사건에 대해 사람들이 like this is getting a lot of attention maybe here
많은 관심을 갖는다는 건 좋은 일이라고 생각해요 because it should, people are dying.
그럴 필요가 있으니까요. 사람들이 죽고 있잖아요 I mean that's horrible.
끔찍한 일이죠 But I am, being from the US that's not really-
하지만 저는 그보다 더한 미국 출신이기 때문에 그런 일은 별로... It's not news.
뉴스거리도 아닌 거죠 I think that doesn't scare me.
그런 일로 크게 겁먹거나 하진 않아요 It's a very sad, like and unfortunate situation.
정말 슬프고 안타까운 상황이지만 But I think like just both of us being
저희 둘 다 미국 사람이기 때문에 from the US something like that wouldn't make the news.
그런 사건은 뉴스에 나올만한 일도 아니라고 생각하는 거죠 Like as-
그러니까- Not newsworthy.
그다지 큰 이슈가 아니니까요 Yeah, it happens so frequently or it may even like make the news,
네, 이런 일이 너무 자주 일어나기도 혹시나 뉴스에 보도된다고 해도 but so many things happen.
다른 흉악범죄들도 너무 많고 You get a lot of information overload.
그렇게 너무 많은 범죄 관련 뉴스들을 접하다 보면 So-
이렇게- Yeah, desensitized.
네, 둔감해지죠 Yeah, you are kind of, that's exactly what it is.
네, 사람이.. 맞아 정확히 그거야 Very, I'm like very desensitized to it
칼부림 같은 사건에는 둔감해지게 되는 것 같아요 but more so the act not so like people dying.
그렇다고 해서 별일 아니라는 건 아니에요, I think that that's very unfortunate
피해자 가족들도 그렇고 and it's sad for the families or people being injured.
그런 범죄 때문에 사람들이 다치거나 죽는 건 That's sad for the families.
정말 안타까운 일이에요 Sure, sure, sure.
그렇죠 Compared to Japan, like government really listen to the, I mean,
일본과 비교하면 한국 정부는 정말.. the people
'국민' the national people, In Korea.
국민의 의견을 잘 듣는 것 같아요 So like if there's something big is happened,
그래서 큰일이 벌어지면 한국 사람들은 Korean people is gonna, shouting, shouting process for
시위하며 소리 내어 의견을 말하고 and again the government are gonna prepare like solve really quickly.
그 과정을 거쳐 다시 정부는 빠르게 해결 방안을 내려고 노력하는 것 같아요 So I think feels okay.
그런 점에서 한국은 꽤 안전하다고 느껴요 Would you recommend people to travel
요즘 이렇게 흉흉한 사건들이 일어나고 있어도 to South Korea despite all this?
사람들에게 한국 여행을 추천하시겠어요? I would. I think it's very cool here.
네 그럴 거예요, 한국은 정말 멋지거든요 It's really different from where I'm from
제가 살던 곳과는 아주 다르기도 하고 so it's just a really cool new experience.
정말 멋진 새로운 경험들을 하고 있어요 It's still safe, it's just, unfortunately these attacks have started,
여전히 안전한 나라니까요, 불행하게도 이런 난동이 일어나긴 했지만 but I think the chances of you actually being there
실제로 그런 사건이 생겼을 때 현장에 있을 확률은 when it happens are pretty slim.
거의 없다고 볼 수 있어요 So I think we'll be okay.

어떤 면에서든 한국이 미국보다는 훨씬 더 안전한 나라라는 걸 than the country where we're from.

요즘 칼부림 사건 관련 뉴스가 많이 보이는데 Do you think there's been an increase in violent crime compared to the past?
경찰 입장에서 폭력적인 범죄가 과거에 비해 더 많이 발생하는 것 같아요? These days you can see the big issues being reported in the news
이제 이슈가 되는 굵직한 사건들이 언론에 보도되고 and via social media you can see
그런 것들이 SNS를 통해서 the actual crime scenes and happenings recorded via smartphone
실제 범죄 현장들이 시민들한테 많이 급속도로 퍼지다 보니까 I think it's definitely making a lot of citizens quite uneasy
많은 시민분들이 불안해하시는 것 같기는 한데 Statistically, I don't think that we're experience an increase in violent crime
뭐 통계적으로 더 많이 발생하고 그런 것 같지는 않습니다 South Korea's safety and security infrastructure is top-notch.
우리 대한민국은 치안 강국이고 치안 인프라가 워낙 잘 되어있어요 Yeah
네 For example ... all buildings are equipped with CCTV
예를 들면 cctv도, 어디 건물만 가도 cctv가 다 녹화되고 있고 combined with all the blackboxes in cars, there are hardly any blindspots for crime
그리고 차에 달려있는 블랙박스들까지 다 합치면 범죄 사각지대는 거의 없는 것 같아요 Two days ago, I interviewed around 9 foreigners here in Korea
저는 이틀 전에 외국인 아홉 명 정도 인터뷰했는데 I asked them how safe they feel in Korea in 2023
한국은 얼마나 안전한지 물어봤어요 a lot of people mentioned the quick police response, which makes them feel secure
많은 사람들이 경찰 대응 속도가 빨라서 안심 많이 느낀다고 했어요 I'm grateful that they feel that way
그렇게 느껴주셔서 정말 감사드리고 and I think that's true
그게 또 맞는 것 같아요 Officers are dispatched to crime scenes quickly.
경찰관들이 현장에 신속히 출동해서 바로 검거하고 수사하고, They apprehend wrongdoers and investigate immediately

그리고 지금 시민들의 그런 불안한 마음을 줄이려고 yeah

만약에 나쁜 사람과 같은 공간에 있는 상황에 처하게 된다면 How can you defend yourself legally?
어떻게 자신을 보호할 수 있을까요? 법적으로 If you find yourself in this situation, try your hardest to get away
그렇게 맞닥뜨리게 되면 일단은 최대한 현장을 피하시고 Yeah
네 Because if you try to subdue those people
왜냐하면 그런 사람들을 스스로 제압하려고 했다가 You might get hurt, so please call 112
본인이 다칠 수도 있기 때문에 112로 바로 신고를 주셨으면 좋겠어요 For example, if we get a report of someone holding a weapon
예를 들어서 흉기를 들었다는 신고가 들어오면 Not only are there patrol cars around the building,
관내에 순찰차 뿐만 아니라 형사들 그리고 인근 인접서 순찰차들까지 but detectives and other nearby patrol units are also present.

바로 신고를 해주셨으면 좋겠어요, 그런 거를 맞닥뜨린다면 Never try to handle it on your own
절대 직접 대응하지 마시고 Personally, do you think the death penally should be legal?
개인적으로 사형 제도가 합법으로 됐으면 좋겠어요? The death penalty is actually legal in Korea
이미 우리나라는 합법이에요, 아직도 남아있는 제도에요 I was unaware of that
그건 몰랐습니다, 하하하 For example, if the president or the attorney general orders it, it can be done
예를 들어서 대통령이나 법무부장관이 '집행하세요'하면 집행할 수도 있는 나라에요 In fact, heinous criminals can still be sentenced to death
실제로 극악무도한 범죄자들한테는 사형이 선고가 될 수도 있어요, 지금 현재도 Thank you for your time today

밤에는 일 안하시는거 아니냐 이렇게 물어보시는 분들도 있는데 but we're active 24 hours a day
경찰관은 24시간 근무를 하고 있습니다 Yeah

확실히 요즘 사람들의 정신 건강이 악화되고 있다는 것입니다 Depression and suicide statistics reflect this.
우울증과 자살 통계가 이를 반영하고 있죠 In my opinion, increased drug use and violent crime are also symptoms
그리고 마약과 폭력적인 범죄들 또한 정신 건강이 악화되고 있다는 걸 of declining mental health.
보여주고 있다고 생각하고요 With the isolation we endured during lockdown
우리가 코로나 봉쇄 기간 동안 겪은 고립과 and the crazy inflation we're going through right now,
현재 겪고 있는 엄청난 물가 상승을 고려했을 때 it's no wonder that mental health is on a decline.
정신 건강이 나빠지는 것은 어찌 보면 당연한 결과죠 So I just wanna say that I hope
