I love model sheetss I can still remember the feeling I got when I first saw Jin Kim's model sheets just amazing he's a South Korean animator and character designer for Walt Disney Animation Studios and has worked on movies like Big Hero 6 Tangled Frozen and many more his work has given me a greater love for the craft and I'm truly grateful in this video I'll be sharing that love by showing you how to make model sheets like a pro but first what's a model sheets often called character sheets or reference sheets model sheets are a bunch of drawings of a character that show specific details proportions poses expressions and various angles of a character in a particular animation style usually for feature films TV shows and video games on a project there could be multiple animators working together and model sheets help animators keep the characters looks movements and attitude consistent from shot to shot and scene to scene a well-made model sheet can make the animator super excited to animate the character model sheets can be further divided into expression sheets post sheets character construction sheets and character turnarounds I'll blend these together to create something you'd usually see in the industry how to make a pro model sheet step by step to start we'll need a character for this demo I'll be using one of my characters called sonara she's a confident friendly art student with a short temper you might recognize her from my video on turnarounds let's make a model sheet first we just want to get a feel of our character sonara has quite a temper so we definitely need some angry Expressions but she's also friendly so we can't let her anger overpower her more positive traits once we've written out the character's attributes we can start drawing the various expressions and poses I like to start with a drawing that expresses the character's primary characteristics in Sara's case I'll do a pose where she exudes confidence and warm energy that would mean giving her a confident smile and a comfortable pose when I draw model sheets for my portfolio I make sure it's in a style I person personally like drawing in I like my lines to be relatively clean in model sheets I just find that this forces me to make clearer decisions with my lines a few more finishing touches and we're done second drawing in this next drawing I'll give her an angry expression quick tip before drawing an expression just draw something like a little Emoji of the expression you're going for and use that as a guide for your drawing I'll go for a different angle from the first drawing in this one this is to give the animators opportunities to see various angles of the character when you're stuck on a particular expression you can check out shows and movies close to your style where they have a similar expression and use those as reference bonus drawing in this one I want to put the character in an irregular pose these are usually poses that artists struggle with or angles that aren't included in the turnaround usually high and low angle poses that might show up in the finished product what makes a good model sheet draw multiple angles your model sheet should show the character's head or body from various perspectives draw appropriate Expressions make make sure your character exhibits expressions and poses within their Persona try to avoid giving say a vengeful villain happy and Cherry Expressions except if it's part of the character's development or used for comedic effect add a size reference if a character is notably big small or different from the norm you might want to include another character or object for the sake of comparison color lots of model sheets do not have color so don't feel the pressure to include color in your work that said if a character is dark skinned or has colorful elements in their hair or clothing you can put some tone or color indicating that color if done well could also make your work stand out I included all these in my model sheets and here is the complete model sheets let me know if you'd like a video on how to draw in any style if you have any questions please ask them in the comment section and I'll be happy to answer thanks for watching please like And subscribe [Music] bye
