How NOT to learn digital marketing!

few days ago i got an email from someone he was asking me to provide a free coupon to one of my courses on udemy or add him as a free member to my channel what got my attention specifically is that person had mentioned that he has wasted a lot of money and time to learn like the shortcuts to make money using digital marketing and now he wants to learn digital marketing properly now out of curiosity i replied to him and i asked him why did you lose money while learning digital marketing i thought he'll just blame some course and he paid for some course and it was not useful at all but then what he mentioned is he lost around 500 after watching this particular video and then he mentioned how he had saved this money to kind of do a diploma or a digital marketing course so that he can make a career in digital marketing and basically make money like a lot of people now this made me curious and i went to this video and this channel and i checked out this channel which has more than 700 000 subscribers which is not easy i mean any if you are not very good at something you cannot have more than 700 000 subscribers it is a lot when i checked his channel the titles of the videos and i played some intros of the videos i realized that he's not a fake guru like a lot of others on youtube honestly initially i thought that that guy was just making up these stories and wanted the free coupon or whatever and his claims are all false so i'll just tell you my reactions after watching this video and what were the flags for me which will help you to understand as well the first thing i checked about this video was a thumbnail which was really engaging i mean the thumbnail plus the title of the video it was prompting and probably if it was recommended to me as well i would probably watch this video as well after i clicked on the video i saw that it has more than 350 000 views it has more than 12 000 likes that's more than 500 comments and all the people in the comments praising that okay this is a very helpful video and a lot of things like that and then i was really interested at this point i was thinking that the guy who sent me an email was probably just making stories and this actually is a very helpful video and there is some kind of skill he is teaching and also i was like okay if there is a way to make money without creating videos without working so hard on these videos and why not i watch it for myself as well so it was not just for the guy at this point i was watching it for myself as well after watching the video for first few seconds i realized that this guy did not give a proper introduction but he directly kind of jumped into the steps the five steps or whatever he claimed in this video and which was good in a way without any waste without wasting any time but then later by end of the video i realized that he did not put a proper introduction in the beginning of the video because if he would have explained the whole strategy in the beginning it would have been a turn off for most of the people and everyone will go away and not watch this video at least the people who know a bit about paid media advertising he used something called if you can't convince confuse now in the first few seconds he mentions that look at my channel this is a new youtube channel without any public videos and it has zero subscribers and the next thing i was expecting is he will say that see i will show you how i made money with this channel but how it goes is he says okay this is my channel without any public video zero subscribers using this you can make money as well so he does not show anything there but quickly after this he mentions that i will show you the proof how i made money with this channel in a bit as well so it made me more curious even i watched the video till the last second and he never showed that proof again but in this video i am going to show you proof that whatever strategy he is claiming is false it will not work in 99.99 of the cases my objective of this video is not to show somebody down but honestly it's about making awareness at least within my subscribers or people who might watch this video about these false claims going back to the video then for the next few minutes he just shows how to create a youtube channel how to name a youtube channel then he mentions some tools and websites where you can make a logo for your new youtube channel so which is actually quite possible for everyone so no red flags until here and after this he just mentions some websites where you can check that what kind of ads are different companies running then he goes and shows an example video of sem rush which they are running as an ad on youtube and it has a lot of impressions and views from their paid campaigns and this is until like four and a half minutes of the video the total length of the video is around 15 minutes and just after this he actually mentions the actual uh strategy of the video which is affiliate marketing and i suddenly understood the central idea of the video but then i was curious that if he mentions affiliate marketing probably he is saying that how you can use these affiliate links to generate traffic to the affiliate websites and make money and the guy who sent me an email how did he lose money after watching this video just quickly after that i realized that he tweaked the idea a bit and what he actually is saying is you use your own money to run paid media campaigns for these big companies and generate traffic for their website and you basically make the affiliate commission so in theory what he's saying is you spend let's say hundred dollars on promoting sem rush using their ad on youtube and you make affiliate commissions more than hundred dollars so if you end up making two hundred dollars in affiliate commission you still are profitable with hundred dollars now in theory it looks like a perfect plan but it's comparable to a plan that you bring a kid who has never played football and you are preparing him in a room sitting on a couch and you're preparing him to play let's say fcb football club barcelona now you explained to him that see you have to take the ball you have to run very fast towards the goal post and at the end you have to kick and score a goal now this guy sitting on the couch to whom you are explaining this strategy he is in unconscious incompetence which means that he doesn't yet know that he cannot do this he wouldn't know how difficult it is to run faster than the players of football club barcelona he wouldn't know that how difficult it's to dodge the defenders and take the ball he doesn't know how difficult it is to score a goal when there is a professional goalkeeper in front of him now in theory it looks like a perfect plan you take the ball you run fast towards the goal post you kick and score a goal it is exactly like this example now anyone who has run paid media campaigns professionally would realize by watching this video that how many flaws there are in this video but later i realized in the comments that all the people who saying this video is helpful they were all kind of learning and they wanted to learn digital marketing skills but they have not done anything yet and they all were mentioning that this is a helpful video this is a very good strategy but none of them had tried this now that i kind of understood the strategy of this video i was still doubtful maybe he has some technique because if you understand the central idea the heart of this particular strategy the deciding factor of this strategy is how well you are able to run these ads if you are able to run these ads exceptionally well and you make a lot of affiliate commissions than you spend then in theory this is possible so but the central idea the deciding factor will be how efficiently you can run this camp these campaigns that's why i was curious i was like okay that is the part which will tell me whether his claims probably what he's claiming he has a technique or anything which makes this possible so that's what made me curious as well but before he actually jumped into that section he wasted some few more minutes about talking about canva how you can download the videos how you can edit the videos in canva if you like a product you want to promote that how you can create a video from scratch from canva as well and then our guy jumps into the interesting part finally which is where he starts with creating a google ads account and then he mentions uh that okay you know what you don't have to create a google ads account directly you have to find the coupon codes which google ads gives and you can run ads for free but in most of the cases at least i don't know whether it's true for all the countries but at least all the countries i have tried it google ads coupon works in a way that you have to spend a specific amount to even get these free credits you cannot just use the coupon and run a campaign from the beginning you have to spend a certain amount and then you become eligible for that credit which google gives you using that particular coupon anyways then he shows uh the two campaigns that are running in his ad account and i was like my eyes were popping out to see what the secret sauce is but unfortunately he just shows the two campaigns named affiliate 1 and affiliate 2 and he just shows the impressions and views he had spent like 80 dollars but again he does not show any proof here that against these 80 dollars how much money has he made and he again mentioned that okay i will show you in a bit that how i made how much money i made with this or he just uses a term like okay in a bit i am going to show you the live proof of uh the profits he made but anyways he jumped into one of the campaigns to show the setup or he just created a new campaign and was showing that what to do and he briefly touched on the bidding strategy and he was like okay you have to choose maximum cpv dude a video campaign with maximum cpv bidding i mean it doesn't match up i mean i wouldn't have laughed at least if he had used maximized conversions or let's say target cpa but again he is driving traffic to the affiliate websites he cannot put the pixels of this ad account there that which means he cannot even optimize towards conversions so he is using maximize cpv for driving traffic and making a profitable campaign and then next he goes into the targeting section and what he mentions there is okay you know what you can target men and women if you have a product which is for men or women you can target them here and then he mentions about keyword targeting in youtube and he says that this is my favorite targeting method and you can also target channels certain channels and that's when i realized that he has no clue how keyword targeting works in youtube campaigns and the channel targeting because he does not explain he just mentions it but i mean from my experience i might be wrong as well but i realized that he has no clue about how this keyword targeting works in youtube campaigns because he just mentions it it is the most important part he just mentions it he does not even explain what it will do and why don't you just open one of your campaigns and show us what targeting you are using why did you create a new one and just briefly telling us you have to target this the central idea of the video he just skips it like in few seconds so going back to our example so it's like explaining uh to the guy sitting on the couch the football strategy against uh barcelona so it's like explaining to him okay you know what when you enter the field this is the way you look in the camera this is the way you tap your player who you are replacing in the field and then we directly jump into when you score a goal and how do you celebrate how do you go in front of the crowd and cameras and all but we skipped the actual part which is how to actually score a goal and after this he directly jumps into affiliate websites like partner stack like impact which are like one of the biggest affiliate marketing websites and then he shows that there that okay you know what for example this product if you promote this product you will get 105 for a subscription and you will get like five dollars for somebody registering only and selling these 105 dreams and i was peeking into his account he hadn't even made one sale from that particular product and he didn't even show anything from his impact account that how much money did he make and he made it sound like going to impact signing up for products like sem rush he made it sound like a cakewalk now what i will show you is uh my impact for example this is impact my impact account and this is my uh partner partner stack account now for example i am affiliate similar web audience lead feeder and these do you know that i have a youtube channel with more than 50 000 subscribers i have a blog which has thousands of organic users every month and when i applied for sem rush they rejected me i gave them my official website i have a website senatorvanads.com of my company i have a youtube channel which talks about marketing and still sem rush they rejected me because they thought i am not good affiliate partner for them and he made it sound a cakewalk you just create a youtube channel you just go and sign up for these awesome products and sell them any product that sells that somebody isn't might be interested in buy and these kind of products they if you don't have a audience if you don't have organic reach on in of any way like a youtube blog vlog whatever they will not they will not accept you as an affiliate marketer it's not true and now the second thing i realized in the whole video there's only one place where he had where i saw that he has made like 25 or 30 dollars in tubebuddy affiliate program he talks a lot about affiliate marketing at least in this video there are other videos on his channel why didn't he show how much money he has made so far using affiliate marketing or at least a glimpse now if you look at my account i have nothing to do with affiliate marketing i am a paid media expert and that's what i talk about but still i have made more money than him in in his account if you see that similar web i have made like 200 and affiliate marketing is not only a thing for me i mean i just created these accounts just to try stuff because i'm curious i want to know what i mean everything in digital marketing i just created this and i made 200 because i have a blog which talks about different tools and i leveraged that i tried to monetize that i created different affiliate networks and i just made one sale in one year if you look here these are the for example for similar web i have got 640 clicks or the audience 6 to 33 263 clicks in this duration lead feeder 214 and even then after referring these are the clicks who clicked on these links and went to their websites these are the people who actually signed up for these products if you see there are no sales at all and these this is the traffic which has intent they clicked because they were on my blog or one of my videos i was talking about this tool they had high intent to check this out they clicked on it still there are no sales now imagine you run paid media campaigns on youtube and you generate traffic what will be the conversion rates it'll be even worse than this so i'm not trying to demotivate you i'm just showing you reality that for that guy when he goes into the ground half difficult then he will realize that okay running towards the goal post is not easy he's not prepared for it look at this this is another affiliate program it's i got them 76 leads that's people who click there are a lot of people who clicked on the links out of those 76 leads which is they generally they registered on the platform and look at the sales there's zero sales it's not that easy you have to generate a lot of traffic that too high intent traffic not from youtube paid media campaigns when you actually your channel does not represent that company as a third party and when you cannot even optimize that campaign because you can't put pixels on affiliate uh websites it's not easy it's very very very difficult you need to have a an organic audience you need to have a youtube channel a blog where people respect your suggestion and recommendation then that's where you can generate these kind of affiliate uh marketing commissions this is where i was like towards the end of the video and everything he had mentioned so far and the claims he mentioned twice that he will show the actual proof which was wrong and until now i couldn't find any proof he was just talking about the proof and making everything seem like a cakewalk which in reality unfortunately i'm sorry but it's not easy for someone who doesn't know anything you cannot be someone who wants to learn digital marketing go to this video look at this strategy for 15 minutes and go and spend your own money and think okay i'll make money you know i'm sorry there are so many people who are so good at digital marketing they don't go this way until you have an audience and reach you cannot use your own money to generate traffic do you think that okay if there was a scope if there was a gap there were people looking for these products and sem rush themselves wouldn't run campaign they obviously run campaigns they wouldn't scale their campaign spend a bit more when they have so much data to optimize for when they have pixels on their pages they can literally optimize the campaigns towards registrations and sales do you think they wouldn't do it or their agency who are spending probably hundreds or thousands of dollars every month do you think they wouldn't do it and you who does not have pixels on their pages who doesn't have digital marketing skills you just watch this video you'll be able to monetize your skills you will be able to monetize the traffic you should send them and that too on the cost of your money you'll spend your own money if you are someone who just finished college or school and wants to learn digital marketing or any skill you have to understand one thing this is from my experience if you want to make money from any skill including digital marketing it's going to take time and efforts if somebody is claiming that you can just watch a video for 10 minutes and you can make thousands of dollars this probably is very very wrong the probability of you watching a video for 15 minutes or two hours or four hours and then making hundreds and thousands of dollars is as rare as winning a lottery and after this i was like okay maybe there's something more left in the video and towards the end he was just upselling one of his tools one of his blog posts and then asking people to watch another video which again promises something else and towards the last second of the video i didn't see any proof and everything he mentioned raised red flags for me now the basic idea of affiliate marketing which he tweaked a bit is you i have audience you have reach you have people following you on any platform who will respect your suggestion and recommendations because you they think you're good at something if somebody thinks i'm good at marketing and ad tech i recommend a tool they will probably check it out and if let's say i'm a gym trainer i have a good body i show exercises then i recommend a protein or i shake or any kind of tool people will respect my suggestion that's what affiliate marketing actually is there might be small variations here and there or if you have a blog you have interesting content on your blog and then you recommend something that's what affiliate marketing is not you create paid media campaigns on with your money and send the traffic to their websites that is foolish i'm sorry so that's all for this video i hope it was helpful in any way thank you so much i will see you in the next one
