the year is 2013 the Nintendo Wii has been on top for seven years at this point releasing back in November 2006. the seven-year-old console was showing signs of slowing down it was nowhere near its former glory Nintendo's solution they finally ended production of the famed console in October 2018. [Music] forward seven months and as a way of bidding a final goodbyes to the console in order to focus on newer Endeavors they decided to kill not only their most popular service but the only service keeping the console alive at the time on May 20th 2014 at 12 am Nintendo Wi-Fi connection was shut down only to be revived not by Nintendo themselves but by fans of the Wii however we're gonna have to bring it back a bit [Music] December 2008 only two years after the Wii's release not only has the console been conquered by a hacker group called team tweezers but also the Homebrew Channel released The Homebrew Channel was an application that was modeled onto your Wii console that let you play on official games and applications on the Wii the release of this channel was huge for software developers looking to develop custom programs for the Wii the release of The Homebrew Channel kicked off the Wii modding Revolution see what I did there it's like you know it's actually a revolution but also Revolution it's like a mod program for the Wii it allowed you to play ROM hacks and whatever dude just cue the music Yep this is it Revolution released five whole years after the initial breakthrough in the Wii modding community that was The Homebrew Channel Revolution is a program that allows you to place mods on your SD card these mods can then be read and patched to whatever game is in your Wii disk slot by this point two siblings have been hard at work modding their favorite game Mario Kart Wii they have been for years at this point and the release of Revolution made their job so much easier and allowed them to do so much more than what they were initially achieving I'm of course referring to Mr Bean 35000 VR and Chatters that's right the creators of the extremely well-known Mario Kart Wii rom hack ctgp Revolution for years since Mario Kart Wii's release in 2008 they have been creating custom texture and music hacks for the game and around revolutions released they were testing the possibilities of full-on custom-made Mario kart tracks but not just any custom-made Mario kart tracks custom made Mario kart tracks that could be played online now for the Keen viewers in my audience you'll notice that Revolution was released in 2013 and when was Nintendo Wi-Fi connection shutdown that's right 2014. this essentially means that their online custom track breakthrough was unfortunately short-lived with the shutdown of the Nintendo Wii's Wi-Fi services creeping closer and closer it only seemed like so much fun could be had online before Nintendo would ruin it for everyone those who played with or without mods enter weem and Laser it less lesser add less less rate I have no clue man anyway they saw this coming from a mile away fueled by wanting to continue the legacy of the console and wanting to allow Chatters and Mr Bean to work on their biggest project yet which we all know later became ctgp Revolution needless to say weem and lazarite had their work cut out for them until finally just 10 days before the official shutdown on May 10 2014 wimfire was born a complete replacement for the soon to be defunct Nintendo Wi-Fi connection it was great the console was essentially same with Louise online services saved and now controlled by the fans there was no limit to what the console could accomplish now this guy was essentially the limit to think that the Revival of the network was all done by a couple of big Mario Kart Wii fans is crazy to think about however wean lizard Mr Bean and Chatters all faced quite a problem not everyone had a modded Wii and with Wii modding still in its infant stages only being around for about five years at this point people were still skeptical about modding their consoles and so a plan was hatched to make wim-fi a much more accessible service enter full metal 5 a Wii modern most known for their job in the wiihacking community that I'm about to outline right now I mean seriously what they did in the community was huge and they were definitely the reason 12 year old me could play Mario Kart Wii online again because I was too scared of modding my Wii on my own and breaking it anyway they created a simple new easy and effective method of patching a Wi-Fi to your game disc without having custom channels like The Homebrew Channel or ctvp revolution basically without having a modded Wii in the first place and finally on December 18th 2017 Mr Bean would upload a video to his channel recapping and explaining how Full Metal fives exploit works this would change the course of the Wii for years hello everyone Mr Bean 35000 VR here and today I'm going to be showing you how you can play Wii games online via wing-fi VIA brand new very easy method that came out just the other day by using Louise God awful web browser you could bookmark a specific site by leaving the site bookmarked closing the browser reopening it and running the bookmark site again it would run and exploit on your console essentially letting a GameFly run on whatever online compatible game was in your disk drive yet that's not where making online play on the Wii more accessible ends no no no because one year later on December 21st 2018 an even easier method is found that's right easier than the previously easy method not only that but this method was more reliable and not as prone to crashing and it was made by the same person with Model 5 This Time by going into your resettings going into internet settings and disabling auto obtain DNS all you have to do is just swap out the primary and secondary DNS and it works you're connected to win 5. how does it work bro don't ask me I have no idea forgot regardless 2018 ends and two new methods for connecting to wingfire found without having unofficial software running on the console previously not only that but since then we modding has become much more reliable and safe I believe 2018 was around the time that I finally decided to mod my console and let me say it was the best decision of my life I mean I could do that I could do this now you'll realize that up until this point I've only discussed wean Phi being the replacement for a Nintendo Wi-Fi connection however if you use the Wii in any capacity you'll know that the Wii also had an internet 24. these were the servers that used to have the channels such as the Weather Channel and the News Channel connected to the internet well guess what we modders have found a way to get almost all these channels up and running yet again unlike Nintendo Wi-Fi connection reconnect24 was discontinued on June 27 2013 and would not see it come back until two years later that's right we fans brought it back in 2015 reconnect24 was launched they brought back functionality for The Weather Channel the news channel the Nintendo Channel everybody votes check me out and lastly email basically just the uh basic stuff none of the still I'm not discounting the work reconnect24 has done it definitely brought back some of the aliveness I guess to the console post we connect 24 closure for sure while reconnect24 brings back functionality from any long gone Wii channels vlink also brings back functionality from any long gone Wii channels but they also add more features to the existing channels on top of that examples of this can be seen in the sheer number of additional cities and countries they added support for in The Weather Channel however best of all they do all this on top of bringing back some discontinued Japanese Wii channels but it doesn't just stop there it also ports them over to North America and other regions which is mind-blowing like the fact that Wii modding has gone as far as being able to replicate so many cool and Niche channels only available to Japanese whis connected to the internet from 2006 to 2014 like I can't possibly be the only one that gets extremely excited over this you might be asking what makes these formerly Japanese Wii channels so special well allow me to introduce you to the the May Channel The Domain Channel launched on May 26 2009 was a channel that allowed you to order literal food from your wheat this channel was created in collaboration with Ben yusha and all order requests were processed through popular Japanese delivery service to damekan also while doing research I found out that there is in fact a Wii U version however that one has not been ported to North America and has been shut down as of May 31st 2017. anyway back to the Wii domain Channel yes in fact we link does bring back functionality over from Japan to North America however you can only order Domino's Pizza regardless the fact that the service even works at all in North America is incredibly impressive this isn't the only channel that we link has ported over they've also done oh God I'm gonna have to do the Wii channel explanation Marathon from my last video Japanese edition this time though we know Ma or we room is a channel that lets you access a fun room for your meets to stay in and enjoy content as well that's that's what the official we link site says at least I have no idea what that actually means this channel is basically just family oriented entertainment and hosted features such as brain training cartoons cooking recipes and educational shows photo prints channels no not the Wii photo Channel the photo prints Channel allowed you to print perfect photos directly from your Wii and create your own business card why would you want to do this on the Wii in the first place I have no idea but it's a thing I guess Kirby TV channel you get to watch episodes of the Kirby right back atcha anime on your Wii fun fact this is actually a European only Channel not a Japanese only Channel which is interesting I would have expected this channel to be Japanese only but I guess not anyway that's all we link and reconnect24 have to offer and it's quite the extensive list they brought back and ported so much to Louis that it's crazy foreign [Music] the Wii like many consoles features games that have ROM hacks developed around them there's nothing special there Kaizo Mario romhacks have existed for years as well as other ROM hacks however very few ROM hacks exist where the main goal of the hack is to actively add new content to the game and extend the game's longevity some of the best examples of ROM hacks that do this can be found on the Wii ctgp Revolution for example is a rom hack of Mario Kart Wii that adds over 200 new custom tracks to Mario Kart Wii these tracks are sourced from the community and feature some of the coolest and most graphically impressive tracks these tracks genuinely look better than Nintendo's own tracks on top of the custom track ctgp Revolution also features a ghost database where you can download and race ghosts on any track including regular tracks this mod also adds quality of life improvements to hosting rooms online another well-known and Monumental rom hack is Project M which is a rom hack for Super Smash Bros brawl the romhack aims to change the speed of the gameplay so that it's more in line with the series previous Century Super Smash Bros melee they not only made the game more similar to melee but they also added some tweaks to the features available in Brawl unfortunately Project M had to end their development as the project simply became too much of a challenge legally to pursue the creators of Project M received the cease and desist notice by Nintendo then fans of project damn decided to group together and create project Mex remix which does project them but better by adding characters and stages and just a whole lot of stuff I'm gonna shut up about Smash Bros now and move on to the last iconic rom hack Revival newer Super Mario Bros Wii according to the romhack's website newer Super Mario Bros Wii is a full unofficial sequel to New Super Mario Bros Wii crafted over the span of three years by a devoted team of Nintendo fans the hack adds 128 all new levels on a gigantic world map remixed in original Graphics themes and music and lastly they added new and old bosses and enemies all of these ROM hacks are still being updated to this day and have quite a sizable Community around them which it makes sense they are all basically just much needed updates to a handful of beloved games [Music] 2023 16 years after the Wii's release and the Wii is still a popular topic the Wii obviously continues to be used within a small Niche group of dedicated fans to this day with services like weemphy reconnect24 and we link you can essentially relive the Wii's peep you can even enjoy old games in a new light with ROM hacks such as ctgp Revolution Project M remix and newer Super Mario Bros Wii being updated with new content to this day of course it's one thing to have a community continue the Wii's Legacy however is there still even an active Community for the Wii is there anyone even playing online on the servers still yes there is definitely a community for the Wii in 2023. 2023 has actually been a great year for the Wii in terms of features being added to the console through modding the Wii is in a great place in the hands of the modding community and I'd just like to say that I am extremely happy with the fact that my favorite console of all time is experiencing a Revival all these years later foreign [Music]
