I really like Nicktendo and I appreciate this video! He isn’t doing the two basic things everyone says: “I like cause there big story, but I no like cause romance bad.” He actually delves into what and why things work and don’t work for the series and I appreciate that a great deal.

okay dastardly oh please my friends call me deke that is the best-looking scene from this film Scoob is a great example of all the terrible trends plaguing modern animated movies a sloppy celebrity voice cast humor that sounds like it was rewritten by a Twitter brand account generic character designs stolen from overwatch and an oversaturation of IPS that makes us feel like the sequel to a scooby-doo movie that doesn't exist I'm happy to see all the references to obscure hanna-barbera characters that validate me for watching boomerang but the main ones featured should have been foreshadowed like in and after credits see if it worked for monsters unleashed it can work for Scoob hey boy hey quit go when I wasn't ironically laughing at whoever copy and pasted these background assets I thought about how its way of modernizing scooby-doo was making it into a superhero movie where the bad guy tries to open the gates of Hell when a recent TV series showed that the classic formula can still work even if it also vaguely involves a plot to open the gates of hell quick warning this video contains light spoilers for scooby-doo mystery Incorporated since the whole series builds towards one big mystery I'm going to avoid talking about the finer details of the plot but I might mention the conclusion of a random episode we're shown out-of-context clip like this got it good now let's solve the mystery of how a show like this became emotionally compelling I'm tired of being afraid I have feelings world for traps if you ask me what my favorite scooby-doo incarnation is I'll do my best impression of the villain from scooby-doo to monsters unleashed whose name is evil masked figure what made this incarnation of the franchise so unique was the talent that worked on it creators Tony servo ney and Mitch Watson we're veterans of Warner Brothers that proved they could inject new life into the Looney Tunes but the new team they hired brought together artists that had worked on a wide variety of projects all the town involved push the team to continuously raise the bar giving way to a cinematic presentation an ambitious series long story arc and an unrelenting focus on the three r's rear rude and rash lights wait wrong letter I was gonna do a portion of this video where I started every word I said with an R but I think this show marks the beginning of full sentence Scooby rowrrr I ran true rap/rock mystery incorporated' is built on a heightened version of the basic Scooby formula fundamentally every episode is what you'd expect it to be you know setup investigation chasing trapping unmasking and explanation except this time this time the monsters are still quite fake just more cinematic many of them are based on legends or pop culture instead of being themed around central locations and simply being portrayed as legitimate threats makes them more appealing than even the likes of iconic villains such as made mummy the explanations for how these average joe's pulled off incredible physical stunts and visual effects are also great half of them just happen to have access to military technology or did a lot of Pilates Derek J Wyatt continues his spotless record of creating the definitive looks of classic character designs as he did with Teen Titans and Benton omniverse but I thought I'm the first looked to mute and different you'll appreciate it more when you're older / nostalgic for it this angular style is not only easier to animate but also very faithful to the original look developed by famed animator II WA Sakamoto Caron attention was put into making sure the characters looked like they leapt straight out of a hanna-barbera show from the 60s or 70s right down to outfits for incidentals being sourced from yearbooks of that era quoting these pedestrians next to the more detailed and grotesque monster designs creates a contrast similar to the likes of our she meets predator which seems to be the kind of vibe they were going for the backgrounds have the eerie depth and texture found in those from where are you but cranks up the level of detail and especially color no matter for scene is taking place in the day or night in or outdoors the eye is always drawn to the light source the characters even have slight variations in their color palettes depending on if the light they're standing in is natural we literally get to see so many shades of the setting because this is one of the first Scooby shows to take place in a single location the small tourist trap town of Crystal Cove a lot of the investigations are confined to neighborhoods and shops instead of gothic manners and renowned destinations but this also means that there's now a supporting cast we get to meet the parents of the mystery Inc members and they occasionally help solve or kick off a mystery they don't do a ton but that's okay because the bar for how relatives of the gang are treated in this franchise hasn't been set very high this is my uncle Bobby Flay I came to enjoy the likes of the noseless sailor skipper Shelton and incompetent Cobb sheriff Bronson stone although both are kind of carried by the fact that they're passionately voiced by John O'Hurley and Patrick Warburton respectively often these side characters are possible suspects were working against the gang in fear of losing a potential tourist attraction to their town and those dynamics make them interesting factors in the average mystery in particular Velma's parents running Museum filled with costumes that call back to previous scooby-doo incarnations but the callbacks impressed me because they extend far beyond the most classic elements the show finds new roles for the franchise's few recurring cast members like the hex girls and Vincent van cool Linda Cardellini who played Velma in the early live-action movies plays Velma's rival slash maybe love interest and see if you can recognize what Daphne is humming here I feel like these references might be here to make up for the lack of Scooby tropes that you come to know and well love is a strong word I can count in my hands the number of times drama loses her glasses or they do the door chase scene and it isn't until the series finale where we get the traditional run cycle and here's shaggy utter his catchphrase I think removing these elements along with replacing meet pop or rock chase montages with more intense encounters we're good changes it means that there's less requirements to fulfill in each episode and more time to flesh out the characters it's rare that we see the mystery Incorporated gang grow beyond their standard personalities but the way they approached it here double check II I'm not stupid oh you shading on me I don't think this was handled well the big mystery of mystery Incorporated is satisfyingly telegraphed and is well rooted in the setting and cast however only 12 episodes of season 1 actually moved this plot forward because that's clearly not what the driving force of this show should be instead much more screen time is devoted to the sexual tension between the core members of mystery Inc Shaggy and Scooby are the same as they've always been but Velma Daphne and Fred have more personality than ever their sassier have an eye for detail informed by their high-class family or they're just a dumbass a very lovable dumbass well gang looks like we've got another mystery on our hands but Dad however their characterizations are diminished because most of their interactions are tied up with tedious back and forth between their love interests Daphne very subtly hints at her feelings towards Fred which he never reciprocate lots of different reasons are given for Fred neglecting her he wants to live in the moment and plans on exploring relationships when he's older look Velma you're complicating things why have a separate relationship with shaggy when the five of us already have this awesome relationship he's afraid of damaging his masculinity can hole yourself Fred be a man keep repeating you're dead inside you're dead inside or he doesn't want to put his loved ones in danger it's just that people around me people I care about I keep losing them I guess I'm afraid of losing you to death I think this and some of the other inconsistencies can be chalked up to mr. incorporated not having a formal writing staff and instead hiring freelancers that might not have all been on the same page there's clearly a strong vision behind the show but the character development isn't always a part of that Fred's trap obsessed obliviousness manages to make him endearing even when he needs to act dramatically although way too many of Daddy's moments involve her badgering him to take their relationship more seriously meanwhile Velma has the hots for shaggy but he'd rather just hang out with Scooby Velma can't accept this in Spence episode after episode selfishly trying to fix Aggie and chastises him for picking a dog over her shaggy does eventually return Velma's feelings but at that point it's too late for both of them even after they move past it this dynamic constantly hangs over the series even though scooby-doo is a non character within it we don't get to know why he thinks shaggy should pick him we just get Velma's perspective it's very strange that they didn't give the talking dog a chance to speak for himself yes certainly do nobody loved scooby-doo sometimes the show jokes about how all of its men are selfish and uninterested in love and that's prominent to an aggravating degree and episodes like the secret serum it's got a funny bit or two but Daphne's intelligence is compromised for comedy and the villain looks suspiciously similar to this side character that disappears one the villain appears I wonder why this is my least favorite episode of the season the high point has to be the fan favorite mystery solvers state finals it's a non-canonical adventure the best kind of adventure where Scooby has to team up with all the hanna-barbera mascots that ripped him off this Scoob movie show taking cues from this because it Bay's respect to the source material while still delivering on the mystery we're expecting it uses the characters for the kind of story they're meant for it you might walk away from it asking how one can perform CPR and speed buggy but you won't be asking why Captain Caveman sounds like a middle-aged man who works at IKEA did you say IKEA Oh following this one-off episode the romantic arcs take a backseat to introducing a MacGuffin that fuels the remainder of the series the mysteries dragging the citizens of Crystal Cove over time even returning to explore people that were previously thought to be culprits or allies it all culminates in the fate of the gang being in flux when Fred learns a secret about his past the drama might be a little cheap especially considering its unorthodox emotional center but everything comes back to the heart of the team and the ending really affects the question of how mystery Inc is going to get out of this one I waited thirteen months to find out how mystery and got out of this one you can draw a lot of comparisons between this and gravity falls they both raised the same question why did their network stretch two seasons over four years mystery Incorporated went on hiatus after every half season I think the first time it was off the air was for seven months so it could air alongside the Looney Tunes show when it returned since that reboot was delayed for premiering in fall 2010 Network this fall 2010 really but then season two one premiere until over a year later and even then it wouldn't wrap up for another 7 months I heard that Cartoon Network preferred to have them air in the summertime but putting out new chapter sporadically didn't work well with a serialized show good thing CN didn't try that strategy again season 2 fixes most of the problems I had with mystery Incorporated early on but only after it makes those problems worse in the premiere episode the night the clown cried the gang doesn't solve the mystery the ending is purposely unsatisfying to show how much they're incomplete without Daphne who refuses to come back to the team after Fred broke her heart Daphne actions make sense but I'm not a fan of how this mysteries dragged out for three episodes just to drum up some more drama Fred and Daphne's seasonal Ark is more meaningful and thankfully less prominent than it was in season one but the way it's set up is frustrating enough to make an episode where scooby-doo drives a tank my least favorite Oh season two the night the clown cried also gives off the vibe that this season will be drastically different Velma has been up to some sneaky stuff fried meats and suspicious new characters from his past and Shaggy's here slowly grows back all these elements either end up falling into the background or a become forgotten after the gang officially reunites although to my dismay Scooby gets a girlfriend and somehow he ends up having the most fulfilling relationship out of everyone in the group the more meaningful changes are found in the execution and structure the gang explores new settings beyond Crystal Cove often giving way to some excellent action set-pieces like when Fred hijacks a plane or Scooby drives a pirate ship down a mountain range there's also a wide range of episodes that revolve around random pop-culture references season 1 had some of this like the episode with a Cthulhu parody created by the very cleverly named author HB hatecraft but season 2 is relentless with a sheer number of in jokes you can still enjoy the series without understanding them but now that I do understand them it's both hilarious and sometimes obnoxious how often this show wears it's influences on its sleeve there's monsters that make fun of the pop art woman and ska music very atmospheric homage is to the shining and labyrinth and it also throws in actors and settings from Twin Peaks and makes them very plot relevant if you've never seen the series the notes section for each episode on the Wikipedia guide reads like someone vandalized the article with deep cuts to eighties culture and horror films that cracks me up because there's a scene where Velma reads off an article from the site almost word-for-word the Nibiru collision is a disastrous encounter between the earth and a large planet believers in this doomsday event usually referred to this object as Planet X or maybe your room I can't believe the smart character is also the one that thinks Wikipedia is a valid source for research we get a few more hanna-barbera cameos like one with a Dark Knight Returns inspired Blue Falcon who clashes with the typically goofy dynomutt poking fun directly at Batman was a good angle to approach these characters with as opposed to the lame and vague pet owner role reversal Scoob hat later on they introduced more old-school characters and also killed off a major supporting character in the same episode I only had one thought when I saw that was the best death scene since endgame season two ups the ante with the overarching mystery by book ending episodes with a recap segment and a cliffhanger that gives the antagonist more room for development it doesn't distract too much from the typical storylines and I actually wish it did that a little more the most satisfying parts of the season are one the monster of the week ends up teasing something that's on the horizon because it makes the episodic and serialized elements feel more cohesive despite some heavy competition wrath the Krampus is my favorite not only because it has one of the downright creepiest settings I've ever seen in this franchise but also because it uses callbacks to create a genuinely shocking twist that changes the whole way you watch it and now the stakes are higher than ever but then we go right back into wacky shenanigans when the gang goes up against a villain who's a threat solely because he's really polite to woman when we arrive at the home stretch and things become much darker and dramatic than what you would expect from scooby-doo it feels earned and not out of place if I told you exactly what happens out of context it would sound like the point where the franchise goes off the rails while Scoob failed to justify its enormous world and conflict mystery Incorporated gradually sprinkled its ambitious elements in with typical Scooby wackiness which made the seemingly odd choices in the mystery arc feel a lot more natural granted 52 episodes gives you a lot more time to set things up then an hour and a half movie does but if the late 90s animated movies like Zombie Island of witches ghosts could pull off this similar sense of escalation then Scoob could have done the same I don't want to spoil exactly how things turn out but the ending of mystery Incorporated raises some questions about how it fits in with the rest of the Scooby Doo canon I which the last act of the finale was expanded upon because you do have to jump through some hoops to understand the consequences of solving a world shattering mystery despite the series being first envisioned as 52 episodes it concluded with a somewhat open ending just in case the show was popular enough to earn a third season the showrunners plan to shake up the format and create a new long term mystery but Warner Brothers decided against that and instead greenlit be cool scooby-doo but I'm not complaining despite the art style I think I need to give it another shot watching scooby-doo mystery Incorporated is hard because it makes me crave more content from the franchise even though I think very little that's come before or since has managed to reach the same height I loved finally taking it in all at once as the gods intended but I still ran into some occasional frustrations the romantic subplots could be downright dreadful character arcs weren't clear tonal inconsistencies were frequent and I could have seen more of that big old mystery in season 1 with that said these gripes really took away from the incredible production design well-executed whodunits the best voice cast in Scooby history celebrities included and character driven comedy that made it as funny as it was thrilling how long have you been standing there don't try that you know the concept of time confuses me at the end of the day my recommendation of this series comes down to whether or not you like scooby-doo because at the core of almost every episode that's still what this is repetitive formula and all it's not anything groundbreaking but it's impossible to shake the feeling that the entire team behind mystery Incorporated wanted to make the best version of scooby-doo that they could and I will always consider it one of the definitive incarnations for all the memories and mysteries that left me Scoob only left me with regret Scooby hello to you guy go bud [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music]
