it's the end of an era celebration of all motor v8 sports sedans the 2022 lexus is 500 what has changed in the 13 year gap since the 2008 lexus isf let's look underneath and take them for a drive so we can find out [Music] all right guys welcome to the car bibles tech segment pop your hood whatever we're gonna call it i'm not sure we have the same engine in each one very slight revisions very similar suspension concept in the front a little different in the back what's different what's better is the new one worth it we're gonna find out when we look underneath the isf this is a 2008 model uh once they introduced the rcf and gsf they introduced the intake manifold and stuff that we see on the other car but we see a lot of similarities i'm just going to point out what's the same these vvti e actuators pretty much the same fuse boxes all the same battery locations same abs pump's a little different on the new car generally everything the same i think even this coolant expansion tank is the same sometimes water pump leaking issues but for the most part extremely reliable good engine the is-500 f-sport performance we have the engine cover off just to show you what's going on but the engine cover actually says f-sport on it which i think is a crime for this engine honestly this is a fully fledged f engine no doubt about it some of the minor differences we see is they move the injector drivers over here so you get a better look at that really gorgeous intake manifold a bit more power bit more pork than the old motor so they kind of made it rev out a bit better but principal engineering is the same and that car has lasted that's all generally positive there's nothing wrong with carrying over old technology that's very good looking at the new is 500 it's mostly the same as the old isf over there except there's a couple key changes so change the front brakes these are now four pistons says six piston compared to the old isf and now two piece rotors interesting choice here that went with uh lug bolts all aluminum double wishbone suspension super beefy 27.5 millimeter sway bar in the front mostly the same story aluminum subframe all that kind of stuff up here it's a really minimal changes for the old car probably just dampers and springs that kind of thing i'm not sure if it's going to come off yet because i've taken about 40 million screws off this is dope immediately what jumps out to me is this thing right here looks normal right it's not just a brace it's actually a damper if we pull this boot off from there you can see but pretty much instead of just being a rigid brace here this absorbs those nasty like vibrations it's dampened by this so it makes the car ride better makes it more rigid does a lot of good things for the car everything else the same uh power steering rack looks pretty similar but it's gorgeously simple under here you can just work on stuff all this stuff here no this is great guys looking at the dips and that kind of stuff um we looking closer it's the same cast iron old big pumpkin toyota uses even the mounting system is the same so there might even be a world where if you're crazy enough you take this out you could bolt it into an old isf torsion uh you could do the same thing with like brz's toyota uses like this same mounting system for all their dips which is interesting but this has a fin cover in the back this is a torso diff not tvd so that's something to consider even though torsions are perfectly fine they separated the shock and spring so you see it's a separate thing it doesn't change performance more about packaging adding more uh trunk space so the spring doesn't take up space up here this toe link is now aluminum the knuckle design is radically different there's a lot of geometry changes a lot of subtle stuff that changed brakes are different single piston sliding this is the old car this is the isf this is actually kind of different only in material choice the upper and the lower control arm down here are stamped steel instead of forged aluminum like on the new car but the knuckle is still forging aluminum on the old car here we have a single piece rotor but we have six piston brembo brakes which are bigger and probably more effective than the new car but i think it's uh it's a give and take front sway bar is a little bigger on this car it's 29 millimeter instead of 27 and a half all the hard points here all the basics are the same there's just no performance damper like we saw on the new car which makes a difference but it's not really that significant in the grand scheme of things all this sort of packaging space here is really expensive to do they're saving a ton of money by just using the stuff and spending on on good stuff like making the car drive better instead of boring things like rerouting hoses and stuff even down to really small details like this plastic reinforcement oil filter housing oil cooler combo the same steering rack externally looks the same could be ratio changes the biggest difference is we could see our rear suspension for sure you see coil and damper are combined not like the new car where they're separated sway bar mounting solutions a bit different control arms are a bit different everything's just a touch different different materials new car use a lot aluminum this one is a lot of stamped steel this 2008 model has an open diff but you could get a limited slip on these isf's okay now that we've looked at the engineering of the two cars we're gonna see what peter thinks how they drive [Music] behind the wheel you really appreciate the torsen luis slip differential as the open diff isf will just one wheel appeal sometimes the redesigned rear suspension and all the other changes on the new car have successfully softened the ride and made it a far better daily comfortable cruiser by comparison the isf feels noticeably sharper and solid in the corners as far as the brakes in real world driving you probably won't feel the heat dissipating benefits of the is-500's multi-piece rotors pedal feel is also pretty mushy the isf's bigger brakes have better feel and sharper initial bite which is good because despite being less powerful on paper on the road the isf feels faster and more agile than the heavier is-500 this old isf is a factory built hot rod it's a more exciting if slightly compromised raucous experience but the evolutionary progress is quite clear with all these revisions the is500 feels like a fully sorted luxury sporty city you go to like slide it around it's like it feels more it's more of an experience it's more theater to that car than the refinement of this despite it's now classic formula the new is 500 is a genuinely remarkable car it's a near certainty that it's going to be the last new naturally aspirated v8 sports end we've ever seen why do wheel locks always disappear
